The Division of the Sons of Temperance, in this city, is now in a more flourishing condition than we have ever before known it to be, and it only requires the same energy aud determination on the part of the mdmberxhip an. I visitors.tlirit have been manifesteil frfni its start, to be con.inned, in order to make Richmond what it should be: a total abstinence city, so far as her young men are concerned. For the start of this glori-1 ous reform, our ciiy is indebted to the labors j of the Washiiigtouians, the meetings they I havo held, and to the truthful addresses of Washingtonian speakers. XdtT We see from the Ciawfordsvillc Journal of the 2Ph tilt., that a 'New Billiard Saloni' has been established there, and a correspondent of that paper, in reply to the lau dations of the editor ot the lievtev on me enterprise of its proprietor, ;ives him a few woll deserved reproofs for recommending the establishment there "of one of those miniature establishments of Tophet." We merely make a note of this item, in order to show, that we have not forgotten the billiard saloon across the way, or that the indictment against cur friend Hope for keeping billiard tbles for gain, is yet pending and will be tried at the next term of the Circuit Couit. Fanl Trade IH Sclinoppsfor Corn, dec. The truthful account which ve gave of Paul DraWrt's Xev Pari perjury c&e. caused him to apply to his attorney for adrice, and the result appeared in a special plea in last week's Jeffersoniao, charging us with always elongatin g the truth when we had occasion to allude to Paul's doings. As soon as Paul goes over to Paris, and sires the
citizens an orportunitr to apnlr the lasli of jnstice to him as his crime deserves, and they fail to doit, it will be time enough for his lawyer to endeavor to do a job of whitewashin: for him! In the mean timo, a frisnd of ours relates to us a case wherein Paul took an active part, which goes to bl.ow that, in recording his evil deeds and short comings, we have been somewhat remiss in noting his tinhfinndud antr .', anil nhilinlhrnmt. nnA we gladly avail ourselves of the eailiest opportunity to lay it before our readers as an offset to the many bad tricks he may have been justly charged with. Here it is: There is an old man and his wife living near town who have the misfortune to like whisky. and thty tind it very difficult to get it when they have no money. Paul's sympathies were aroused in their behalf, and his bowels of compassion VearLed for their desmuie ana toiiorn conumon ; so, wuuoui one moment's hesitation even without consulting his lesral adviser (which he iiever was known to neglect on important occasions,) bitched a horse to his waon, put a supply of "schnopps" aboard, assisted his "frow" in to the vehicle, got in himself, siezed the reins and away dobbin trotted to the home of this seeing the old couple. JtW On Saturday, at Mansur : Reid's slaughterhouse, two colored hands disagreed about the proper method of either 'saving the Union,' the courage displayed .at Har per h I erry bv the r . r . . s, the prico of pork, or some such question of vital impor tance, when they come to blows. After ineffectual attempts to make an impression on each other's heads with their lists, one of them seized a large mallet and struck the other on the head with it, making the wool fly, and leaving a severe gash. The combatants were then separated. safe eSaaa eJWeaev- ' "Is Fcn!" On Thursday night List, opposite the gas works, an individual stepped out m front of old Sir. Penny, who was on his way homo about o'clock, and presentins a oistol at him ordered him to stop. Mr. P., not inclininfj to obev such an order, and having a large stone in his hand, ru&hed on the scamp, siezed him by the collar, and was just about ascertaining which was the hardest, the stone or the fellow's head, when the blow was arrested by the exclamation that he was "only in fun!" and that "the pistol isn't loaded!" The sturdy old gentleman, after shaking some of the "fun" out of the trembling cul prit, and administering to him a solemu lec ture on the sudden death that might havo overtaken his mother's son, let him go with his funny feelings somewhat abated. Mr. P. is well acquainted with this fun-loving young man, and he thinks he will never again seek for sport where it might tickle him t death! W Never shall we forget that " Big Pump'' in front of the Borton Building, or the time when the roof of the Palladium Office was enveloped in flames, and, in the graphic language of a reporter of that fiery ; scene, the handle of this same "Big Pump" was siezed by the Ladies (Heaven bless "em!) "who, bearing their lilly white arms to the elbows, with unmistakable muscular efforts, forced the liquid element from tha depths below out of the nozzle of the aforesaid Pump into the engine and buckets, and was thence conveyed to the Id.-izing roof in floods that soon quenched the destructive flames!" All honor, say wo to "ye Big Pump!" M ty our lips be blistered whene'er we forget to speak thy praii", and may our hand lorg-j: its cunning if i: fails to give thy handle a friendly shake when w"fhin its reach and we nie thirs ty! Not only is this "Big Pump" gruetuily re.xcmbered for past services, but it still e retinues yielding its never-failing instalm. of pure, crystal water, and, as in by-gone times, it again serves the purpose of pointing out to 'all the world and the balance cf mankind' the tlacs where baroaixs can bo had in Ort Goods. Our friend James M. Hays, having an entire new stock on hand, has removed near this famous Pump, and thither are the inhabitants of Richmond and the region rouud about directed for supplies. As the sparkling beverage from the 4 Big I'ump' satisfies thirst, so does friend Hays satisfy all drafts made ou him by his customers for Goods, by supplying them with the cheapest and best articles for Cash.
