Thursday Morning, Sep. 22nd, 1859. ======= Locomotive Steam Engine. I love, says Elihu Burrit, to see one of these huge creatures, with sinews of brass and muscles of iron, strut forth from his smoky stable, and saluting the long train of cars with a dozen sonorous puffs from his iron nostrills [sic], fall back gently into his harness. There he stands champing and foaming upon the track, his great heart a furnace of glowing coals; his lymphatic blood in his boiling veins; the strength of a thousand horses is nerving his sinews; he pants to be gone. He would drag St. Peter's across the deserts of Sahara, if he could be fairly hitched to it; but there is a little, sober-eyed, tobacco-chewing man in the saddle, who holds him with one finger, and can take away his breath in a moment, should he grow restive or vicious. I am always deeply interested in this man, for, begrimed as he may be by machinery, he is the physical mind of that huge steam-horse. ———<>——— Jefferson Terrltory. The Pike's Peakers are taking measures to secure from Congress, at the next session, an organization for the Territory of Jefferson. in accordance, we suppose, with the bill for that purpose reported by Mr. Stephens, last winter. An additional reason for this action is found in the omission of the Western part of Kansas from the area of the State, as its limits are fixed by the Wyandotte Constitution. Of all the proposed territorial organizations, this has the most substantial merits. The population of the Pike's Peak region is undoubtedly much greater than that of Arizonia, Nevada, or Decotah [sic], and its prospects of speedily becoming a prosperous State, are certainly equally as good. We trust, however, that Congress will be in no hurry to increase the number of these petty subordinate Commonwealths to be constant subjects of agitation and controversy for the whole country. ======= HARDWARE STORE.
