were electioneering ngainBt the Republican com-! icee for Clerk. Oar compositor left out the pre. fx "ex,' leaving the reader to infer that Mr. Huff j

is against tne nominee, wnicn is not mo lact. jur correspondent referred to Mr. Lynde, and not to Mr. Itaff. An unfortunate personal feeling was excited in the canvass for the nomination of Clerk, between Mr. Lyude and his successful competitor, and the course of the former is to be attributable alone to this personal feeling, and we are convinced that some of the friends of Mr. Schlater have endeavored to widen this breach, and use it for their own benefit. They will adopt any means to sow discord in the Republican ranks. Tbe political influence of the Clerk's office is too important to be surrendered without a struggle. It is due to truth and to Mr. Lynde to say that we do not believe he is osing any influence agairst the Republican ticket, and what was said against Mr. Meredith was under a feeling excited bysmisrepresentations. There has been no cause

to suppose that for one moment Mr. Lynde would OHnot vote .for all the ticket, except the candidate

for Clerk, and his opposition was, so far as one particular is concerned, we ksow, the result of misrepresentations made to him. We mako this statement without the knowledge of Mr. Lynde, and let his coarse be what it may, it will be one which he thinks right and proper. It has also been said that Mr. Beitzol would not vote for Mr. Meredith. We shall not believa it, for we believe ho is too good a Republican to refuse his vote to the party with which he has been so long identified.

iMr. Schlater and his friends are urging his election on the ground of his superior qualifications to perform the duties of the office of Clerk, ncd almost intimato that there is no cue as well qualified as he is. We shall not dispute his ability as Deputy Clerk; but we will remind tbe reader that many of us thought that when our friend Laz. Noble left the Clerk's office, that his equal would never be found. Mr. Scott, without any very peculiar fitness over many other men, has made as good a Clerk as Mr. Xoble, and the inference may be fairly drawn, that there are hundreds of other men in this county who would make as good an officer as either of them. Mr. Meredith, as United States Marshal, performed duties far more intricate and extensive than those of County Clerk. The Clerk ia the Treasury De

partment at Washington city, who had charge of

the duty of settling with the Marshals, informed us that no Marshal in any of the States, presented bis account in better form or more accurately

made oat than did Mr. Meredith. Hundreds of

thousands of dollars passed through his hands, and no man has ever heard one word of complaint as to the manner ia which he had performed the

duties of that highly responsible office. The charge of incompetency is but another electioneering story, and has do foundation. . Watch th Poll. We are assured by those who profess to know, that arrangements are now being made to import voters in this county at the next election. Some of tbe Democracy of Rush

coonty say that they owe "Old Wayne" some, and I

that they will pay the debt on the second Tuesday in October next. It is also said that a number oFjoang men are to be brought into Boston township and be voted there and this city. We ask ihe Republicans to be oa their guard. Ssemm or State.- The Sheriff of Franklin county, in issuing a proclamation for the next election, includes among the officers to be elected, a Secretary of State.
