Thursday MorniEg, April 14, 1859. PEOPLE'S BANK, RICHMOND INDIANA. Lewis Bcrk ) Proprietors. M -1 Old Folk.' Concert. This wag another success not in so large an attendance as the formerjet by very respectable audience; but in the character of the eoertainment The programme was considerably changed from the former one, and more varied in its features, embracing more of life acd prececal illustration of other dajs. The singers were less embarrassed acd ting with more freedom the Bands played well, as they always do the industrial scene was trae to life. In the latter, several ladies appeared in dresses made more than eighty years ago, from flax which was pulled, broke, scotched, hackled, span, wove and made up by hand. They were worn for many years by a venerable lady who resided near this place, and who emigrated from North Carolina nearly half a century ego. The immense labor or making the material tf thefe dresses, precluded the idea of very marRive skirts, and of course they were ol ce - cesslt'y very narrow-necessity perhaps controlling the fci-hion of that day. One lady was ecntchirg flax in primitive etjle a cothcr had a hackle and was separating the lives from the fiber another was spinning the Cbx on a small wheel- ancther was picking wool another carding it another upiDuing rolls as i - . - handed to her from the cards another reeling. There should have been another relic, which we have seen a hand loom. John Maxwell, near Cer treville, has a loom made by Robert Morrison of this place, soir.e forty years ago. which had it been present would have added additional interest to the ecer.e. In this scene, quite a number of little girla were emi.loved-or.e churning in a bottle, acd others were assisting their mothers as cirls were wont to do a loDg time ago. Ibis was a ruarhed ftatnte in the entcrtaitin.ent, and we rcgrt that ,lLiaWitei oi ino nour ; '2 - ' scene suggests the idea j wl 1 - of gelling up an "old settlers' partj"in which our fathers and mothers "cn participate with mtith and miik, corn bread acd ley hominj for supper. TLe entire icctiota for the tverjing were about $70. llorticiilturul Society. March 9;h. Society met, I'resident Ilutton in the chair. The minutes were read and approved. "Walter Stevens was elected a meaiber. The question for the day was, What soils are Lest ndupted to fruit prow ing? i'rtinin was spoken of in connection with it. Dr. O. 1'. Hear made nome interesting remarks on the growth and soil best suited to fruit trees. He said they never should be planted deep. He made his soil to suit the particular kinds of trera: that lime, clay ct.d Hint were necessary to all bulbous fruits, and tl at soil with more or Jess of these in grdk J,o La best suited to fruit culture. Trees growing upon clay soil, produced more compact and harder wood, w hich was less liuble to injury by cold. Hesaidtbn apple expanded more in siee during tie fall and winter months than any other. He had tried it by banding every month in the year. H. Strattan paid that his peach trees groaing on the rich alluvinl deposits had not one-fifth as many blossoms ss those on his clay soil. He thought it best to select high rolling land for orchard purposes, abounding oiore or less in lime; if inclined to be wet, thoroughly underdrained He preferred pruninir the latter nart nf He thought it would Leal sooner; did not throw our. water shoots as bail, and ripened the wood better.' Iewis Jones said he had seen the best orchards end fruits on I he poorest soils. J. Heed said he had pruned his orchard in AuURt; His trees did not throw out water shoots. V. U. Smith thought that the pruning knife reed never bo used on a tree if we would use the should know where each branch' should be when the tree is ten years old. President Hutton said he would not altogether discard manuie for trees, but never use fresh ma cure; ho concurred in Mr Smith's plan of pruning; thought most soils should be nuderdraiced for orchards. Walter Stevens said he had succeeded in raising some c f the large Famish gooseberries, mnl ching with tawdujt one jcar, aud the leaves the next. On motion the question was laid on the table for future discufsiou. 15, Strattan presented a question on late summer pruning, which was laid on the table to be called cp at a future meeting. In conclusion, we ask all those interested in the subject of Horticulture, to come forward and as sist us in building np a societv that will ba of lasting benefit. .Adjourned to meet in two weeks. a&yTho Chicago Democrat and other Kopublican pipers are urging tho necesitr of running a Southern man for President, to! give our party a "national character." XTbe Washington correspondent of tie Philadelphia Press says, exposers will t made during the next session of Congress, which will demand the impeachment of high officials. It would 6eera that in many departments, there is a deliberate disregard of the letter of the law, and what is more shameful still, that there hare been authorized violations of the sanctity of 'private correspondence. To relieve our institutions from the infamy the present Administration has put on them,
and to save us from the calamity in wuicn finger of scorn would point at ns from every quarterof the world, it is the duty rf every man, whether a representative of the people, journalist, or otherwise, to make the facts appear, that Uy may call down crushing denunciations on the heads of the guilty. Here is one. A gentleman of one of the cities of the West holds himself responsible with another, on oath, to prove that not only were documents ordered not to be distributed when sent to a certain Senator, but that letters were also violated. An Investigating Committee will be called on this raster, as well as on the other malpractices of the Post Office Department, at an early day of the session. TVortli Indiana Conference Appointment.
