Th; rVendent, iu the exercise of b's kingly power, vetoed the bill; and we invite the atte;ition of the soldiers wh periile 1 their lives in da- ' fence of tbeir conutry to the fact that this old: Federalist, true to bis early faith, is opposed to j paying them a pittance to aid them i:i their decling duys. lie will be sustained by his party,! and those who bavo been looking for aid from j tho Government know what they have to expect from that party. j Will.tMl' Veto. j On our first page will be fouud the inessnge oj i Gov. Willurd, on returning the liquor hi'!, an; nouncing bis veto. The old eud flimsy idea of i general laws being required under the coiistitu- j tion upon every subject, is brought forward to defeat this bill. Let us look at the incoDsis'ency j of tbe thing for one moment, and inquire why is ! it constitutional to authorize the pe ip!e of one j County to levy a tax of twenty cents on each one ; hundred dollars, while another levies tihrty, fortyi or fifty? Why make a road tax of ten cents in! one county and twenty in arotbt r? Ant! why are a thousand other things equally local ul'owe l, j and tho liquor truffie to ba an exception? The idea of comparing the sale of liquor to the culti. vation of the soil is simply ridiculous, if not foolish. If there is any justice in the comparison between them, let us look how it works. A farmer who has tbe best quality of lurid is assessed at twenty dollars per aero hia neighbor, ovr.iu? land k-sa valuable, is asefsed at fifteen dollars another, with land equally an good a.s the first, but removed from town, roads, or other advantages, is taxed at tea dollars per ucre. A town lot is a.ssesiC I at five thousan 1, tthile nn ncre of land not a mile di.-o.unt ij taxed at one hun .'red dollars. But these exonses, for they cannot bo dignified by Pie term reasons, are all humbug, aud could only be entertained by a miud controlled by a , J appetite for strong drink. of course requires but a small stream of water to propel it. The foundation is upon solid rock, giving a solidity and permanency which but few mills possess. The machinery was put up under the supervision and workmanship of James Albertson, who has proven himself unsurpassed as a millwright, in the West. The castings were made by Messrs. Garr & Co., of the Spring Foundry, and they have in this work fully sustained their high reputation as machinists. Every wheel seems as perfect as those of a watch. There is no jarring—no choking—no stopping to adjust machininery [sic], but all goes on in perfect harmony. The plan is simple, very simple, by which the power is applied almost directly to the point required.— The elevators, conductors, &c., are, it seems to us, perfect in their arrangement and operations.— We have seldom seen a mill, East or West, which pleased us better, in all its features, than this one, which reflects great credit upon the enterprise of the proprietors and skill of the workmen. Mr. Addington is a practical miller of long experience and intimate acquaintance with his business.— And with Mr. Albertson as the architect, and Mr. Addington as miller, good flour is the inevitable result. Messrs. Brown and Addington are now in full operation, and we have been using flour from their mill for a week or more, and feel competent to say that it is of a superior quality. They are prepared to stand by the grist, thus enabling the , farmer to have flour made from his own wheat.— They are also prepared to exchange flour for wheat on fair terms. In this connection, we would suggest that in making out the Premium List for the next annual Fair that a liberal premium be offered for the best Flouring Mill, and we venture the prediction in that case the mill which wins the prize will have to beat the Relief Mills. ———<>——— We have received a comtnntdca'ion in regard to the visit of a co'nmi tee of ladies to Mr. Kirtley. It was written by a pcrsoa who speaks only from reports, and his statements are different from what we believe to be the facts. therefore, ws decliue publishing it. As we un derstand the facts to be, Mr. Kit thy s conduct was far different from what was expected from a gen'leman who prides himself so much on his Southern courtesy and gallantry.
