The Wheat Midge, i In an ocUtorial on "Wheat culture in No. jS of the farmer, it was taid that the Wheat Iidge lftd not vet done any injury in Indiana, to tur Lnowledjre. Since that time we l ave heard of one piece some Feen miles northrAft of this place, which was little over ylf ft crop, occasioned by the midge. That ir w $ 1 boon he a terrible enemy to our wheat Ohji in the Western States, as it has been to those in the Eastern, we have long Lelievf i, and therefore we should keep wt-11 pojtf'l in regard t'y it. The following whjh y rnjS t have originated in the paradise of 't o expected intruder, will he read with tfrcstt nr.d profitable. WHEAT MIDGE ORWKEVIL Editor Rural As the time is at hand; when th; farmers of Western New York must ih-termiiiC what disposition to make of their , v Lcat lands in view of the ravage of the Wteil, I wish to submit some observations, i.ot R9 original, but for the sake of comparing them with the observations of others w ho j i..ny chance to notice this communication, ... j The fcoil of my farm is loam, interspersed j with patches of clay, and intersected with; ron.e swa.ey land, and as it abounds in lime ; (-tone is naturally favorable to theproduc-; ti m of wheat. I have now growing fifty j res, occupying a sufScicnt variety of soil to mi.swct the purpose of this con:municatioif, ; v hu h is to present the condition under which , ti c weevil has thus far committed the most ft lions depredations. j Insects arc not capricious in their move-! merits, and we may obtain some control of j uieir mis-chief' by watching the ircunihtances j which more or less embarrass find hinder j the m in their depredations. The weather iJ one important circumstance, which a kind ; Providence alone can control; but the kind I
i f soil, the preparation, the time of sowing J she hcec, the variety ot wlieat pown, are un- j iler fur control, and in my opinion have a j -reat influence in securing the crop against j t lie ravages of insects. It is with the view to furnish some data in j regard to the operations of the weevil that I j have selected of nearly the same size as pos- ; k'jIo, the following series of wheat heads, , i hich have matured under the circumstances c iiimerated. I have carefully counted the ; perfect kernels which now remain, and wish, to be understood that the deficiency in mini- . l.- r, in parts of the heads, is caused by wee : The little Mediterranean I have in mvi cn.p is uninjured. I have selected from the; S-oiJes wheat: Three heads on backward spots, high I. .ml, each of which have 20. 14, 2 I kernels. Three heads on early patches, higil land, i 1'J, -IS kernels. " .: Tim e heads on dry land, highly fertilized with manure, 50, 4.2, 54 kernels. Three early heads, on -Iwali-v land, but kw as good, lib, 39, 40 kernels. ,!y general conclusion is that early development of the head is the greatest safeguard. Those who have hitherto sown wheat at random, without regard to soil or preparation, will have to desist or lose their crop. With il'ie regard to the following circumstances, I "...ten. I, nt present, to continue to sow wheat: 'J. Dry laud naturally favorable to wheat., nicely prepared, so as to secure a rapid i mwth in the spring. ! 2. Land made fertile with manure, so as to ' invigorate the plant, securing early develop-1 mei:t. 3. Sow as early as is prudent witli due re"ird to injurv from the Hessian tly in the tail. " 1 1. Mediterranean variety on low, sw.-, levpatches. The 'observance of these rules will much, abridge the number of acres sown, but will! give us a more certain rot'irn. I have r...M'! I i - cnty-fivc crops of wheat w ith variable sue-' it "vine: in some as hiirh as 1,500 and l.i'OO Inihhcls. I have received more in.ii:y in one year, once from rust, twice from II u--i.ni ily, than would he intiicted by weevil in ! seven yerrs like the present, and yet I kept! n sowing. Mv experience may not be that i f others, for I am aware that locality has much to do with the ravages of insects. J. U. Smith, M. P. ; Ogden Center, N. Y. Improving Vegetables by care in saving tho Seed. From tlia Country elont'.cmaa. It has been beautifully written that 'a wild enrrot accidentally, fouud in cultivated ground refuses to run to seed, but employs itself in , building up a root stouter than any carrot had 1 fore. Tho watchful eyes of a gardener rein uk the change; the changeling, still a s --rout, flowers al last ; its precious seeds are ; .ved, and committed to still richer ground. Nine-tenths of the seedlings ran back to the wild form your carrot is but aa intractable gentleman after all but a very few prove obedient to the will of man, shake otT their savage habits, refuse to flower till the second year ; meantime spend their auiumn and winter in the further enlargement of their roots, then rise up into blossom invigorated by six months' additional preparation, and yield more seeds, in which the tixity of character, or if you will, tl e habil of domestic-; tion, is still more firmly implanted. And! thus begins the raco of carrots." Here we; l ave the one idea sought after of increasing ; the size of the roots, transforming a dry sticky substance into material fit for food. Other j irts are improved or altered in the same way. Most vegetables owe their present state to a s.milar process, either accidentally performed ' . 1 y nature or assisted by art.
