FraltSapptT n4 Destand. "Some persons think we are setting out too many fruit trees in the United States, and that this product will soon become a 'drug in the market and cease to pay. New York and Philadelphia are probably better supplied with good and various fruits than any other large cities in this country; yet it is rare, in the most plentiful portion of the season, that fair prices are not obtained, and every variety of fruit, hi well known, wken it tirBt comes into those markets, each year, commands very bieh prices.

The Country I'he Country Gentl eman is good authoriv nn thin subject. especially bo far as the Eactern States are concerned, and it speaks as follows: "The demand for fruit is at present increasing more rapidly than liearirg tree6; prices of the best pars have at least doubled with-! in a few years; the finest irmtrr varieties now ; KtU readily in the large cities at one to three ' dollars per dozen; and the result of t heir sale ; and nsequent introduction to notice, is to make them better known and more nought after. "The present'appearances are, that it will be a long time before the market will he overstocked with them, and the prices will rather advance than recede. But those who prices Will . , would make their cultivation profitable, must not expect that planting out trees, simply, will answer the purpose; skill, knowledge and attention must be brought into rerjuiui-f-ition. But wbiks neglect will certainly end in faibire, there is probably no business where well-directed intelligence promises more certain and more ample profits than the extensive culture of the finest fruits for market." If anybody knows alarge cityinthe West, the markets of which are ever "glutted with jrond fruits for ten days in succession, we hhould like to bear what city. We are quite certain it is not Tittsburg, Cincinnati, Saint Louis, or Chicago." Home Journal. ' Improve your PlowiDK.'' Very sensible, indeed, upon this much dis- j rogftrdt (1 subject of good plowing, talis tLc rroii ir Farmer in the followinfr editorial: ' "What do you plow for? What enrhi pnrpo. e do you expect to subserve by trauip- i ing all day long to and fro aeron that field j after team and plow? Why don't you j ilirow your grain on, harrow the ground, and fpare yourself and team?" The first and paramount object in plowing in to effect a minute division of the soil. In ihis Btate it is not only more asily .penetrated by the tender roots of jrrain ami grasses, but lnore permeable to iir awl moisture. Jook at the never failing fruit fulness ff our' river bottoms. Thee alluvial sfil have1 been made by the long contained overflowing of turbid or muddy waters, which have de , posited the earthy particles they held in solu- ; cion so finely divided, ko completely dissolved and mixed as to form a kind of paste laver after layer, until some of them are of great thickness. These lamls owe their extraordinary and enduring fertility to this tlnclv divided state and thorough and complete intermixture, and not, as has been gene-' rally Mipposed, to an inexhaustible supply of fructifying ingredients. For according to the analyses of some of tlwse "bottom lands" in ()lii, by l'rof. Wells, they were found to diHVr only slightly from the sterile soils of New Kngland. Their great productive-! nesit, therefore, must be attributed mainly to j their extremely fine division. Now, the ncrrer wc bring our coxsmoii, arable soils to; (he same condition, as to mechanical texture,! the more fruitful will they be; and this is tobe done by careful plowing, rolling, harrow-1 ing !ce. i Second: Plowing admits the easy descent ; and escape of suqdus water; of the free cir.illation of air by which the natural powers j the soil are greatly stimulated, and the growth j of plants promoted. The presence of tine ! oxvgen of the air in soils, and its frequent j emt.val bv plowing, constitute one of the j !.!r.f i.iniilitiiitw nf tli rirnil Mr t i vftiia ni fif "' r-: --- id. Seeds do not germinate when placed ht'votitl the reach of oxygen, and ninnurf h ; w ill imucrgo no clmiige ly winch crojis are ; hpiuTittetl. Oxygen, Alieii it cn freely! -iter a soil, unites with it organic matter and furrriB carbonic ackl, whW-h the roots lake "j. The more complete the oxidation of n soil, the more fertile does it become; but a sninll Miojily of oxygen canirot le obtained unless the soil is kept open for the free admission "f air. The a-ration of the soil is Irehl by boiiio to be the prime object of plowing. There are 1 fome soils which contain weak oxides of iron; nd of uiMi'ganesc, whicli are poisonous to j vegetation. By turning up these soils and J exposing thein to the free admission of air, J the further production of these oxides is pre- J vented, aud those existing are rendered harm- ' less by the absorption of an additional (jimntity of oxygen. I Again: All soils contain a greater or less' proportion ef compound mineral substances 'their debris of crystaline rocks such as hornblond, mica, felspar, etc etc., in a state ef degradation. It is by the continued decomposing of these minerals that exhausted fields b lying in fallow, or unoccupied, be-'. come renewed and produce again with youthful vigor. Plants derive nw supplies of too J which before was locked up. This pro- ' cess of decomposition is wonderfully increas-. ed by the act of plowing whereby air and; .nrboiiie acid come in contact with the par-1 tides. ! All these purposes obtained by plowing are the more perfectly won as the operation , is the more carefully and thoroughly done. ; The whole body of soil should be cut up and .nmed over, and to effect a complete pulver-, ization the furrows should be narrow and es-; act in width.
