AGBICULTUBAL SELECTIONS.

I' ram the Indian Farmer. CoRN-rLANTiNO is generally a time look- j ed to with much interest on the farm ; and us it ia already on us, suppose we say a word about it We have o tough time of it just now (the 26th) in getting our ground ready ; it is toli-rd and cloddv, for waiit of rain: but it wHl teion rain, (we suppobt?,) and then there will "be a genenr! rush for the corn-! field. I'lows, corn-markers, harrows, hoes, ' and corn-planters, will all hv out tejretb-r, w'th all the boVs. and 6o-ne of the triils bo- j aide. Of the planters, we suppose soir.; are , , iii. 11 jT-dd nri'l some are bad ; Mu ail require T-R-rid'ticfc Cut BOOiC Com will be planted in the d l way this year at least, and so a word nbf.ut thi". j In the first place, don't plant among the -i. Js, if they can be harrowed or rolled ; -l wn. Having put the ground in good order.mark it outtoth ways, and plant it with j tij- firt marking. It i.i the only way to have straight Town. Or, mark it one way, j urn! dr'.n the other by utakes. AVc have; f-.-imd tins a great saving of labor, and n enn--fjuer.t haatening of the work where har.ds wi re scarce. A cood band will drop neaiiy .t fast as he ran mark, and tlrj the labor of ne hand is gjved. 'Beside, the rows are Invariably straight, audtlie'corn eaily tend- .. For covering, a good light hoe is best ; ! lit father modes are more speedy : sornc cover with a cultivator or --.fvt, some with a double shovel-plow, and oine with an impkincnt like a shovel-pl6v, , fitly armed with a pijuare. shovel instead of a round one. This is drawn by a horse, and is dropped in the furrow just before reselling the hill, and then raided aain, by which process the loose dirt ia drawn over the corn. W't hear complaints about ceed Vom from different quarters. You must see that you plant good seed; or if it cannot be had, find oat about what proportion will grow, ar.d put enough in to make up for the loss. j urn- in linn ii, . ,i the rows being three and a half feet each I way. . i We do not lilfr drilling, unless it be i.i ; rh-ftrsod. 'i'he wels anl grass are sure toj come, and they cannot be got rid of without; the hoc, unless the "cultivator can work tdVe ; to tlto coin both ways of the field. We lmve ri-d this often, and know what we say. ; We have used an inhtruii.eiit f r marking oii" corn ground made thus : Two pieces of acr.niling about feet l'U'g are placed crowi e over three, larger on. .-., s.iy 3 f-et Im g aod apart, and fastened near the ends. T t these are affixed a tongue and handler Thin makes three marks t oiie : but we have generally found it difficult to manage so as1 wake perfectly straight row ; yet it saves much time. RVlilleavalinr. When the spring -r(r;s are oil nicely and lOin-iy put in there will' be a littie leisure It will be a line opportunity fur whitewashing Whltrwash has beei 'efdled the jo.r man's paint, on account of i:s" cheapness ; but this ia not the only thing it has to recommend it. It promotes health. A tew days and d1!.:.rs spent iu white-, washing, pays better than any other investwent. Vll!ir, pantry, milk-house, sittingroom, ns well as all the other rooms should: have an annual coat of lime, and now is the; time. Lesides this, n!l board and picket ! fences must Lo whitened, as well as the nutide of buildings not painted. How it strikes lie eye of an observer half a mil;? off, especiif Le'wants to buy ft home. Few seem to be aware how much it adds to the money value of a farm, w hen all the buildings and fences are kept nicely whitewashed. Stowems Kvkrobtkn' Corn. Let no body neglect to plar.t a pat; h of this best ofj ill varieties of sweet corn. No other corn j lit to be eaten wliofe tlnV can be had. It j does not come quite so early as some other, kinds, but continues throrhout the season ! from its maturing, and mny be kept the year round not by pullbw green and drying ; on the ear as has often oeen asserted, but by j cutting from the cob, cooking and then dry-j ing. Corn and beans can as well bo had j during the winter and coring a at any oilier time, as we have fully proved. The j fodder is said to be much preferred by stock j to that of any other corn ; but of this I can- i not speak, certainly, not having tried it in j that way. j Tik Lima Hb.x. There are few persons; in t'uo west who know the luxury of Lima Hero. Those who have revrr eaten them, : think thev arc oulv beans, and therefore do; not consider them worth seeking after. 1 rr.t lot I iniMiu i fciii.ia ,. . - - - - . . hevare only beans, but decidedly superior j o all other arietics. A dish of "hot but-' tl to tered beans." is decidedly nice to the eye ot . a hungry man ; but no otiier' kind will com-; pare with the Lima. I JFow to llaite tktm. l'lant in hills, three ' feet apart, and put three or four beans in a place. When up, stick in each hill, a pole i some eight or ten feet high,' for them to run on, for they are great vinersas well as very proline. lL,w to cottk them. Hull, boil tender, and season with butter, salt, and pepper. StAisi'is. Tu days that once were, the soapsutlt. went to the gutter as regularly as the washing-dav was ended, and there are too many who allow the plan to be followed "in i lie present day. All do not seem yet to hoc learned that a tubfull of strong soapsuds is worth a much, as a fertilizer, as a wheelbarrow load of good manure : and " yet how much is thrown away. No wonder that tho grounds about kitchens and farmhouses grow rich in so short a time. Now every bucket of suds should be thrown where it will not he lost. The garden is a good and convenient place to dispose of it, but tho Toot of grape vines, voting trees, or any thiitg of this sort will do as well. Anything that requires, a strong moist soil, needs soapsuds. How many a good crop of vegetables or fruit might be realized if every body would acton the hints here given. Rk.membkr it. In laying out your summer work, remember that American farm work may be diviJed into two kind work that most be d"ne iu the growing season, and work that niav about as well be done at other times. In distributing vour work, let nothing beset down for May, June and July, which yon can do before, or which yon can months. The "now or never" work will be leave without ranch detriment till after these hurrying enough for these months. .V. 1. Oiterrtr. IXTERATlCrNAt. "FAIR AT HfFFALO.
