Thick and thla Sowing. Mrssrs1. Editors : Having noticed in the
Country Gentleman, an article or two on "Thick and thin .Sowing," and "Proper! Quantity of Seed to an Acre," I can by my wii experience contirm the surgefltiona and . ,V f . I .- m statements or outer, r rom observ ation ot thrifty growing crop, have long been satis less quantity of. ion Of StOUt growfied and convinced that a 3c-d will do ; for an innpect ii'Jf ZTAin, it is Tery evident that the number of plants growing on a given "pace of ground iK far short of the number of ecds sown. Wry often I have examined winter wheat licforc harvest, by counting the number of mots or plants growing on a square rod, and vighing an equal number of grains, have fisct;rtainel that where one and a half to two IftihhelH seed had been sown, only from six to eight quarts per acre were actually growing p.t harvest time; and while living in western New York, have repeatedly sown only half a bushel wheat per acre, on part of a field, and have always fonnd that the plants were fewer, they always spread out more and filled better than on other parts of the field, where tLey were crowded by ovor-ecding. In April, 185 1, 1 sowed a field of 20 acres 'r, oats, except a piece of about an acre, on .vhich I sowed 2 bushels of peas and half a (nshel oats mixed. This piece lay on one li le of the field, and was of the same aver.te eh.iracter as to quality or surface. I finished Rowing in the afternoon, and experti d that the teams would finish the whole field !y sundown ; but having too much ground t go over, the ground was not touched. The if xt it rained, and continued wet for three dnj's. .Six days after sowing, I directed a l. ind to get the harrow, and if the peas were not much grouted, to liuitli it, which he did ly harrowing it over once ; and going to the ground afterwards myself, found that the j'K-as by so doing were mostly spoilt for growing. They had sprouted from two to .'our inches. The oats, however, grew well, and for some time before harvest they could ii5 plainly distinguihhod from th road by a d:irkcr color and taller growth. At harvest time, and in hauling to the barn, and from tde comparative number of sheaves and yield, the- piece was estimated by every one, to vieM at least ten bushels more per acre, than t' balance of the field, on which I averaged two bushels seed per acre, all sowed on the .:ine day. The piece, or pea ground contained by measurement after harvest, 180 rods niid no teas of any consequence grew ou it. The whole field averaged 56 bushels or in re. Wm. I'loi kkk. Mi'tniiicn, Wis. Vovnfry Hentlemun. N'otk. The greater yield of oats on the pen ground was probably owing to other causes than the one assigned, perhaps greater , fertility or better condition of the groundVet we are convinced that much less seed than is usually sown will produce as luhhI crops if the land is very rich and well prepared, and the seed evenly distributed ; because the f-treugth and condition of the soil causes the plants to btool a little better. Poor land in bad condition, requires more seed. Corn stall; llnrvestrrs. An eftectivo machine for cutting up standing corn by Lorse power, lias been often in'('iireti lor iu mis country, niacmne ir: t tiis purpose was invented by Seneca La-j j'bain, of West Libertv. This machine, kc I.npham's seems to be in a dormant state : bother they will ever be in the market, is '. cyond our knowledge. The Scientific American for March li, de-"-tibes a new Corn Harvester recently patntcd to Wm. M. llonwill, of Camden, Del. rather like the description of this machine, which is said to be alow three-wheeled vehicle drawn by a horse, the animal n diking in the furrow or space between the .''Mvs of corn. On each bide c-f the machine, front, there is an upright revolving shaft, ' :e lower end of which, near the ground, is uibhed with a circular saw. The shafts are :it iu motion by means of the vehicle. When !u machine advances, the saws come in connct w ith the base of the 6talks, and they are 'irred off in an instant, falling over back wards upon the platform of the vehicle. As :kst as a sufficient number ot stalks to form i sheaf collect npon the platform, they are wept off upon the ground, by the driver, ho touches a lever for that purpose. The . pi, with a full belly, will never root ; the :.en, with a full crop, w ill not scratch the ground. Therefore when my hens are disposed to scratch, I call them up to the barn, iinl pive them as much com as they will eat. ur which they always smp to me a merry . ;une, anil lay a whole hat full of egg. j To prevent the Crows from pulling Corn, i I scatter corn in the field broad-cast. ; which they feed upon and leave the seed. If j I have too much company by my liberality, j I soak the com iu strichnia and hot water. Last spring, after scattering half a bushel of j corn soaked in this way, I picked up forty- J two dead crows, and how many more went; off feelinir "kind 'o sick," I am not able to.
