From the Indiana Farmer. Tfee Sprimg Campaign. The long and dreary reign of old Boreas is arawiBR to a cloe the god of euxmner b beginriiE"- to ascend the zenith, from which , Iiis per,!! ray can more effectuallj warm j the boom of mother earth, and instead cf
the cold euoclydon, e already wjrm to ieet the soft warm breath of the bland and gentle zephyr of the "sunny Sonth." Nature Assuruei a milder and more cheerful tone, and -e are reminded that th Spring campaign Las again opened upon us. Tlua then being the caw, every fanner should l up and preparing for aetijn. It may cot do yet to Btart the plow, but the plow fchould be got rea.ly. If you need a new one, buy it at once, for the j.low-tnakcr will not be able to supply the Spring demand, and you may fail entirely. If the old one will do with rlving, have it done without .lelav. Look to the "gearing," and see that or. and readr for use. All V J mAilT we.- r may save trouble, perplexity and delay, n the ground becomes dry enough for this wLen the plow. r. Sod may be broken Almost as . , e a 1. ..... . C it, imMiml l.nt mjoii as me irom u . f.'" -- .talk and stubble fit-Ids most not be touched till weeks later. It is a very common error among farmers to plow their land when it is too wet. Avoid it, by all means. I'.ut much worte than this, is the practice of allowing stock to run on the fields in the spring, after the frost has begun to come out of the ground. This almost ruins land until is grassed again, and there is no apology for it. Stock should be kept in the barn-yard until pasture is ready for them. At any rate keep them off the- plow ntms. If vou Lave any wheat ground which was tiot sown with grass-seed in tho Fall, now is the time to do it. After this month, it will be too late. Clover should be sown early m the spring, whil the frcst is heaving out of the ground, and Timothy and bine-grass at theaarue time, if not sown in the Fall. Look to the fences. (Jo round and replace .11 r. m'lla that the winds have blown off through the winter. If any fence is to Lei reset, go about it immediately, and do not wait for a "more convenient season." If you have any manure to get out, do not do it now. while the ground is aoft, but wait fill it has thoroughly settled. Better by far leave it till Fall, and put it on the wheat ground, than haul it on the fields when they are wet or mud.ly. Do not neglect to plant out a few more trees. If you havo not a good orchard, set one out without fail. That farmer scarcely deserves tho name, who is content to live y ar after year with only a few stedlh g op-plo-trces on his farm, d perhaps not that. Fence off a lit or field, as large aa you wixb, and plant it with a few choice kinds of thrifty young apple-trees, and do not allow it to grow tip with grass or weed, but cultivate it with potatoes, or some root crop. If the ground is not very rich, manure it well, especially about the roots of the young trees at the time of planting. Flow it and keep it clear every year, until the trees are nearly largo enough to War. It may then be sown with clover and mown, not pastured. l'lant out, also, a few pear, peach, cherry, plum and other fruit trees, of tho latt-st vanities. Set around your door-yards a variety of evergreens, fctuli m cedars, pines, arbor vita's, kc. Spend a few dollars in this way, and ten years hence your farms will be worth hundreds more iu conpenneucc. It a. tewj forest trees, such as maples, poplars, ashes, j .,aks, buckeyes, hickories, &c, are inter-1 ?pe.rscd w ith the e ci greens, it will be all the j better. Kemembcr to select tnese irom me. open fields, and not from the dense forests. You have no place for trees! Make a place. Enclose your house with a neat board or paled fence, and you have all the place desired, if tho fence is an it should be, a few rods from the house. If you have any seodling apple-trees or! thcr fruit trees, prepare to graft them as j oon as the sap stirts. Unless they arc very j lan'e. old and thriftless, our word for it, it rilt ray. If anv of inferior variety, regraft ; them. If the crafts are not already cut, do it now before the luda bepm to swell. If thepo thiriga are all considered in time I they may nil be attended to in season, but if otherwise, some of them will be neglected, and few, perhaps, accomplished properly, and iu their proper season. That farmer is sureIv to be pitied who gives no thought, and bestows no attention on his work till the lr.y arrives in bich it should be done. From the Indiana Fartnv. Nherp nnd Dok Agmiu. Wft still continue to hear of the havoc made by dogs, among sheep, in various places, anil have no doubt bat these nocturnal depredations are being committed every few nights in some part or other of our State, and it can do no harm occasionally to call the attention of our farmers and sheep-raisers to the subiect. And it may be a seasonable time at present t do so, as the candidates for j the next .Legislature are beginning xo nnounce their names. That body has the power, in a great measure, to remedy the evil, by enacting a stringent law upon tho aul.ipr-t. and wo hone our wool-crowintr - j - j friends will See tO it that the men w ho represei.t thera at Indianapolis, are such C will favor our interests in the matter. Put in the absence of a law such as we j need upon the subiect, a few remedies may , be suggested to mitigate the evil: indeed, we ; msy have nothing more than these to rciy upon for many years to come. In a few remarks made before the State Board of Agriculture, in 1S5. by A. 0. Stephenson, he srioke of the difficulty of catching dogs with tie f beep, but the certainty of catching them with strychnine. A dog will commonly enter a field or lot where sheep are enclosed, near the farther corner, and if a loc crosses ' o i i fence, be will make his ingress oyer it.- j re place a piece of meat, into which is in--the Here serted a portion of strychnine, and the dog that finds it will soon be hors dm combat. This plan ehould bo invariably resorted to after the first onslaught, as the guilty dogs are nearly sure to return within a few nights afterward. The poison, of course, should be usl with great cautionIt has been said that a flock of sheep, every tenth or twentieth animal of which carries a bell, will not be disturbed by dogs; but thia is an error, as wo have known the bell sheep to b killed. We know of but one unfailing retnedr, and that is to bonse the sheep every night thronghout the year. E. Facktiocs. The editor of the Horticulturist of Philadelphia, informs a lady of New Jersey who gravely asks how to make butter come, that if nicely packed and put en a railroad to that city, it will be sure to come, if properly directed" Doubtful, during the "cold cycles" and "icy terms" of a protracted winter. A merchant who lately advertised for a cltrk who could bear confinement, was answerd by oae who had lan Mvea years in jau.
From th. Indiana Farmer. Jlake a IIec-e. Asa general thing, our farmers are very eareleas about making Hot-beds. Unless they have sweet potatoes to sprout, which is not common, as thev usually buy the plants, it is rarely attended to. They hardly seem to understand that a few hours Fpent in such work, will enable them to Lave most kinds of vegetables a month earlier than their usual season. Kadiehes, Cucumbers and Cabbages,
especially the carlv York, should be rtartcd j 1 i.i a hot-Led. and after the irround has be come warm enough, removed to the open air. We have known Irish potatoes put out in the same way, and after the danger of frot is past, they were taken up, and each separate sprout taken off, like those of the sweet ptatoes, and tran-plantel. Treated in this way, one peck of potatoes will plant three times as much ground as when the tubers arc placed at once in the ground. But in order to have potatoes early, we should prefer to transplant each tuber, with all its shoots, just as it was placed in the hot-bed. Treated in this way, we have little doubt that we may have potatoes a month earlier than usual. Jlotc to make the JieJ. Make a box as large as you wish the bed, say three by six feet, of thick plank, and about two feet high. Place it on a southern hillside, or ci some warm situation. Place a few corn stalks, some broth, or flax straw in the bottom, on which shovel unferraented horse manure, fresh from the stable, to the depth of 12 or 18 inches. Cover this with rotten chip-dirt, or something of the kind, to the depth of four inches more, in which the seeds may be sown and covered the usual depth. The bed must be covered with glass. This may . be the windows of some out-building, if you are unwilling to buy a sash and glaze it especially for the purpose. Water the bed when it needs it, and uncover it when the weather is warm and the sun shines, but don't forget and leave it open at night when the frost iu feared. The other side of the bed should be higher than tire south side in order for the latter to catch and retain the solar heat. We hope our friends will each make a hot-bed and see if it won't pay. B.
