It would be well to tee first wtat cciiftiiue a good hog. The head should be short, handsome and prightly, with thin, etrall, po;nted and penduloun tars. Thejewl should be medium ilti. Tha fceck short, and not too hear.i i'uing well en the shrroltters; the shoulder .ot ui:o as high as the loin, thick and of oofl oubstarce, rounding well out; the con--titution ii generally in proportion to the Ca.tu. iousness of the breast and loin. The bris.;cou:iD? well down, and the distance be"vn the f... re legs as great as possible. The Utk broad and straight, and rather slightly arched t'lan ctherwise, and particularly no .inkinir immediately behind the shoulder. The ribs well arched, forming a good barrel, and j upporting the belly well. The loin, as before , remarked, wide aud full, with ribs coming well Lack. TLe mrnp rotmding off eYen; i'..e tail well set on, small and tapering, aad ;.inlv haired. In the Suffolk breed the tail j i! curie d l.ke a cork screw. 1 n nam musi oe r S I I ... J .)lin i.ut so as to come in a line with the shoulder; : t jch a fcrmed ham will weigh well to iu size. The hips, wide spread, and the twist coining Weil down; the flank dee-p and fall; the belly loomy, but not coming too near the ground. The lega straight and fine in the bones, tha muscles Lear, particularly in the thigh and urm; the hock pointed, the pastern joints firm ;.ni strong, not resting in the dew claws on .he ground, so that the animal has a bold and . reel footing, a thick, fleshy leg will not car-: ry a heavy hog to a distant market. The skin thin and gelatinous, and easy masticated, soft and handling well and free from eruption. Tha hair smooth fine and soft. No bristle on. the neck, shoulder or back. TLe above description, form and qualities are those that in our view constitutes a good hog. Ok Shoeing IIorpks that Ovbr-IUach. Mr. Editor: I was bred from my youth a olacksmith and farmer, and whether a natural mechanic or not, I was always anxious to know the whys and wherefores of things, or more properly speaking, the casualties and preventives. I was also fond of trying experiments upon such things as appeared favorable of improvements. I was generally in the shop with my father of evenings and rainy and such other times as I could be spared hom the school and farm. But being in the -.'.op so much, I obtained the views of farmers, generally, and by that was enabled to liiake many improvement on the farm. I ! irr.eJ also, that many farmers entertain verv . roncous views about blaeksmithing (and I r.iiihiadd blacksmiths too;) still they were L mnd to dictate according to their prejudices; -.mi t- . i !.r instance, one sajs: J ms norse over-reacn-t-ji. I want yon to put the forward shoes as far forward as possible, and set the hind shoes n far back, or he will tear them off." I would sometimes try to reason the case by sajing the way to prevent a horse from over-r-viehing, is to augment the speed of the forward feet, and retard the motion of the hiad His; but in order to accomplish that, I shall i.uve to r;rers-e your dirfotioss. Some who had little or no mechanical genius, would cut short all argument, and say, "follow my directions or else not shoe the horse." Of course, a mechanic must obey orders, if ho breaks owners; so clinking to every step; while, perhaps, the man of inquiry would doire a full explanation. My way is, to. Make the toe-corks rery low; and standing a aide under, aad the shoes set as far back as ooavenient on the forward feet, with high heel fa-jlka, so as to h t them roll over as soon as . ussible. On the hiud feot, I have the heelaulk low, aud the toe-caulk high, and proacting forward, thu keeping back the hind "'tot, while coming up over a high toe-caulk, :,iving time for the forward foot te come cut of tha wat. If thus shod, the horse will :ravel clean, without a click, and his speed will be increased on a trot, fifteen or twenty ieconds in a milo. If acceptable, I may say something about shoeing foundered horses hereafter. N. E. Farmer. Dcx. From tha Indiana Farmer, HAD QUALITIES OF COWS. Messrs. Editors: So much has been said of the good qualities of the cow, and nothing of her imperfections, that justice imperiously demands that the whole truth should bs told. Good beef and butter and cheese and milk are not to be dispensed with, yet like the rose among the bid mere, they are surrounded bv thorns. I rep at it, although I may have all the churn sticks iH the country leveled at my pate, and UTe anathemas of every Racket man who trudges to town with a tin bucket of a Saturday. I say the cow is a lazy beast. In winter, at least, her feed must be taken to her, or she must be driven to it. And so of her water; the bucket must be presented to her nose, or she must be driven to the branch. There they go, ten in a row, one before the other. in single file" -the Boaster cow in front, and the second mistress cf the Hock close in rear, and so in order down they come to the bony thing that every one pokes. See how grudgingly they moove a snail's pace. The cow man bawls in the rear, but to little effect, and he can only strike the hindmost, and thia the "old heifer" in front disrerd9, and moves at her old pace, keeping all behind from passing. Just now, she comes to a narrow place in theway, and a fell halt is made. The man in the rear roars as none hat ox-drivers can. But there she stands with her head a little down, and her ears tuck1 back, and her tail tucked close in, she forbi la anything to pas. A real tyrant as she is. she will neither go to the water herself, nor let others go uatil the cow man rushes forward with a club and mooves her. But this. nvertheless, she repeat at every narrow pass in ! nw she soaks herself wonderfully, and if the branch should be a little frozen, and but a f. w spots at whieh water can be obtained, she will put herself to especial pains to keep all others away, and when she is fairly done, she turns herself around, and takes upon herself tha work of keeping all others away. This fairly exhaasts the last drop of patience paUence possessed by the cow-man. and in he rushes with a club to drire ter away. But she is intent upon her work of malice, and (killed in it accomplishments, she now place herself directly between tha water and the waiting herd, aad a the oow-maa's club forces her out. she carries back at the point of the bayonet, all that have been waiting in her rear, and when at length forced to make a relinquishment, with what malice she tosses ber head as she place herself in the way back, stopping, as before, in avery narrow place, to show how determined she is to exercise supreme authority. She is to laiy to go to teed or drink, and too mean and tyrannical to let others. Who can have patience to end are mscfc a beast of a oold saorning? Aad then
to get her milk, you must have yourself kicked and bespattered with mi!k from bead to (bo. Here is my new Sunday pants ruined at a tingle dash by her ill-temper. And thia is not all the milk is all filled, and there is nothing left for our pains but an empty bucket. Again, she is a noisy, bawling beast. If the calf be taken, she keeps up such a din as to be insupportable to all quiet persons. But notwithstanding all thee imperfections, the cow has man si fir admirers and larire

A MlLKaR ASD FkEDER. From tha Ladioa' Departmert of tbe Indians Farzser. en.tufK and Ordrr. Neatness and order go hand in hand, like I twin sisters. 1 ou sei. lorn see one without the , v other. In all the departments end avocations of life, these virtues are necessary to ensure any deeree of success or proficiency, and j -rat r 1 l"t where there is a lacic ot these aithoun every necessary or every' luxury may he furnished in the bouse, yet where disorder and confusion reigns, there is little comfort, little happiness, little real er.joytr.er.t to be found. The. spirit of beauty dwells not there it is not amid Fcenes of discord and co;j'umoii that the love links of families are stronsrlv incited by the exercise of goodness, purity and true love, joined with moral and intellectual culture. But their tendency is downward. A familiarity with filth and dirt is degrading, debasing to the mind, and if by long use persons become accustomed to it, it is conclusive evidence that they have been dragged down to the level of their daily surroundings. Neatness and good order have a strong practical bearing upon the welfare and happiness of families. A place for every thing, and every thing in its pbscc, is a rule that ought to be observed and enforced in every household, for where disorder and slovenliness prevail, discontent is sure to follow. But neatness is sometimes carried t such extremes by housekeepers, that the peace, harmony and social enjoyment of the family circle is almost entirely destroyed. Scrubbing and scouring is the order of the day front Monday morning till .Saturday night, and indeed iu some cases the stillness of the sacred Sabbath is broken by the renovating and polishing that is continually kept up. .Every thing iu the house is too nice to bo used the doors and windows are kept carefully closed, and darkness reigns supreme in hall and parlor, lest some fugitive spider or fly should find their way in, and soil the polished furniture, or dim the shining glass; therefore, every memoer ot the laimiv, young and old, must walk round to the hack j door ot the cook shea to enter the house, lest they should soil tho snowy whiteness of the sills. We candidly believe children are often driven to seek society and pleasure at the tavern or country ale house, because they can have no freedom at home. Ncw-gthere certainly is no use iu having a -house, if you can't use it, and men who toil ai;l labor f iv the comforts aud conveniences of life, ought to enjoy the pleasures to bv detied therefrom. Give the husbandman p. resting place in that cool, cosy room, instr-ad of confining him to the kitchen's din and cook stove odors.
