Free, tae New York Tiaes... Shelter Cbeaper Ikaa Fodder. , Xotwitlistandin much that has beo written during a few jean past, eapecia'.ly in the agricultural journals, on the true principles of winter protection an J feeding of domestic anir.ials, there is still a freat amount of costly igr.crancc on this subject. Last winter we chanced upon the-farm of a rr.au lio possessed a (air share of intelligence . npon general matters, and we were not a lit- i tie surprised to find him still clinging to the old opinion that his stock wintered better when ! fxpowd to cold, than if warmly boused. lie -pt 1.0 account of the food consumed, but Lis iLscrvaiion had taught him, and truly, that)
.is sheep, for instance, consumed more food in a old winter than in one of moderate temperature; and he reasoned that if they could oat more, it indicated better health, and a luster growth of flesh and wool, and ot course a greater profit. Following out this opinion, he kt pt a flock of sheep in an open field, exposed to bleak winds and pelting storms. In Ihia f eld Le had placed a number of small Macks of hay, to one after another of which they l ad free access, and upon which they made rapid inroads. Their only shelter was ifiorded by the leeward of these hay stacks, nrxl hr the stone walls that surrounded the fmld s. together with a groTe on the northern tide, served to break off the wind in that direction, but from entering which they were prevented by the intervening fence. He was quite sure they ate better when thus exposed than if housed or allowed a warm shelter around and under the barn. His other stock were treated in a similar manner. Instead of warm sheds or stables, they fed and slept in a eoM open yard. He said that it kept them in b-tter "heart," and gave them a sharp apl ttitc, as to the latter, he was doubtless correct. I'.ut he, like a thousand of others, had drawn his conclusions from a false theory which a few careful experiments would have corrected. Ho should hare considered that the profitableness of keeping animals depends not upon the absolute amount of food they consume, but upon the greater or less product j of flesh, wool, tc, obtained from a given ! amount of nutriment. Had he weighed his ; animals in the Fall and divided them, keeping one part in close, warm sheds or stalls, and j the other part in the cold situation, he would j have found that the protected animals, while corn-timing less food, gained more In weight : than the- others, and in May or June would : have been in superior health and heart. In the case referred to, it was found necess ry to ivo the sheep a dose of tar by applying it upon their noses in the Spring, to operate as ' a tonic, and to counteract the "running at the nose," prodnced by colds which sheep catch ' as well as men. There is a principle or two involved in ' feeding and nutrition, which, if well under- j too 1 by a'l who have the care of animals, would render their labor doubly profitable. ' Tho faod consumed by animals serves a double or treble purpose). It supplies the waste of the j system produced by the natural wear of the , various organs, and keeps up respiratit n and j the resulting heat. What is left after these j ends aro served, goes to increase the flesh or ; weight. The trrar depends upon the amount of ex- j ercise taken; hence the more quiet animals are kept after allowing ju-t enough exercise to preserve the organs in a l.ealihy state, the , less will be the amount of food required to supply tlie waste. 1 The heat of the body results from the consumption of carbonaceous food, especially the j oily and starchy portions. The union of the carbon in a tallow candle oroil lamp with the ' surrounding air, producing the heat and the flume, has an exact counterpart in the lungs and blood of the animal, when the air drawn ia at respiration, unites with the oily or fatty matter iu the blood, and gives heat to the system. On a warm day cot much heat is removed f.om the surface of the body, and the animal rt-athes less rapidly and fully, and less fat is consumed to supply wasted heat. If the same amount of oily food is consumed tn.d digested as on a cold day, there will be a . larger turplusto be stored away as fat. As a matter of course, the colder the weather is the less surplus fat or profit will be obtained rrom the food. Another point usually overlooked is this, j hi the coarser substances, such as hay and , -'.raw, consumed by animals, there is but a j small proportion of oily or carbonaceous mat- j tor, and to get at this, it is necessary to digest I a prodigious quantity oi iooa. inis overtax- ; es tho digestive organs, and results in more : or less debility. ' Wo have here an explanation why a smaller ; quantity of meal, which produces oil and ; starch, (both of which are rich in carbon, the j chief heat-producing element,) will keep an aiiimal in so much better health. The principles above indicated, which are i fully established by both scientific theory, and oft repeated experiment, lead to the certain; conclusion that, for all kinds of animals, whether kept as stock, or for fattening, it is . most profitable to furnish warm shelter. We j repeat: a flock of sheep or a drove of cattle, j will, without doubt, eat much less food and I aln more in weight, if kept nearly at summer j beat during winter, than if left exposed to our ' iat'teiueut weather. ; Thiaks I to Mynrlf. A'e are indebted to a worthy and observing frien is for many of the following hints: 1 Wiien I see a mass of chip accumulated in a f.irmes's back yard, remaining year af.er yar, thinks I to myself, if the coarse nes were r:ked off, they would serve for fuel, while the finer parts, with the addition of 5oap-u Is. 4c, from the house, would afford a valu tble source of manure. When I see a convex barn-yard, thinks I to myself, there is comparatively but little manure made there. When I see the banks of manure resting against a barn during the summer season, serving only to rot the building thinks I to aiyseU, tliat manure might be better m-plt-ved. When I see a barn yard not well supplied wi:h materials for making manure, thinks I to myself that man suffers loss for wast of care. When I see a piece of hoed ground in a mowing field, and the turf, stalks and atones that were carried out by the plow not co'lectel together, thinks I to myself, there ia sonsetamg glorious tn this ease. When I see plowing dene year after year in tlie same track, beside a fence or gully, till ii dike of considerable height ia thrown up, and of course) a corresponding leanness in the interior, thinks I to myself, there is a want of good husbandry. When 1 see a fruit tree loaded with twice the top necessary for bearing well; and this perhaps nearly dead, thereby keeping the needed rays of the tan front tho under crop, thinks I to myself, there) is an indication of bad husbandry. When I see stone piled round tho trunk of a fruit tree, thinka I to myself, here is an inritauon. to suckers and to Bice, and if dull eythee ahould foUrm it would not be strange.
.When I see a farmer selling his ashes for ten cents a bushel, thinks I to mvself. that
farmer had better given his purchaser ten i cents to leave them for his corn and grain. i When I see the drainings of the barn-yard j finding their way into gullies and rivulets, I while with small expense, they might i tV.rnwn nn tn a walnwhU or fieriivitv m row n on to a raiuame sweu or aeciivuy, i thicks I to mvself. that farmer is blind to his j own interest.Jdume farmer. 1 C:d aad Agriealtare. Having made these hints. I will present two tables of facts the first of which I gathered from reliable financial authority in this city, and the second taken from Well's Year Book: 1. Plowing Matches, which teach nobody how to plow, counterpanes made by wasting time in cutting calico into bits and sewing them together again. kc, kc.,) the ollcers of our agiicultural societies would take pains to ascertain what new agricultural implements have been made, or what improvements made in the construction of old ones, what new or improved seeds have been or might be introduced, the use of which might be beneficial to the farming community, and would take proper measures to have them tried under the supervision of committees appointed for the purpose it would be productive of more benefit to the public.
