A corrci-ponilent rerjiifhteil infunnation on j the ui ject ot ice house, keetiur ice, occ. We handed t!:c n.j tter over t one who ha had much experience in this matter, and the followiiigr i hi rej.lj: "Mr EriTR: At your request I villi descrihi-jf the 1-est maimer of keeping ice, as j as far as I have had experience. Ice lions' thould be huilt ai.ove pround, with an air-tight floor, and sides near enorgh ! so as to prevent a current of air from pnsniug : through. The traine frhould Ik; huilt so as to ceil insidu ami out, (as suits conveiiici.ee j or fancy.) leaving a space between to be : filled witli charcoal, nhes, tan-bark, Kawduot: j or chaff; ('coal or ashes most durable.) The ; roof should Ik- water-tight, with chimneys or : openings ejual to one square foot in twenty -five, for escape of vapor arising from the ice. A brick or Hone building should be ceiled j with wood iiibide, and tilled as above. "The floor should be made to slope to one side; or, Letter, from each side to the center, to a t-jtout, to conduct the water under ground to a drain; or else with a cell or syphon in it, tilled v. ith water, to prevent air from passing tip. (tn the inside place scantling one or one and a half feet apart, and till in bet ween-v ith the aine as the sides. Cover lightly with straw, ar d ttcw on the tee, taking care to fill incb'Hclv between the cakes with ice broken fii e. rveen a little straw Wtwecii the ice ceili When tilliil. cover almut four inches deep w ith straw, and in warm weather turn it over evei v two or three days'. The size w ill dejiend s much upon the lergth of time the ice is needed to be kept, t.s upon the quantity to be taken out, as ice melts fn.m the topmost. It sj.irt'ars to repiiie about ten feet square by fifteen feet high to keep the hole season, well taken care 01; coiise-1 ji!entlv it in econi.my to buy as needed, when , coiiveni 1 t to a huge ice horse, ht re ice l nn be purchased. j "Kefrigi-iators for keepirg ice may le made like a cupboard. f any required size, j of matched boards; the bottom may be made i double, filled lightly ith coal or ashes. ; Construct a double grate of wood one foot below the top, by .lacing a tier of wooden! tronghs, thick enough to sustain the required weight, from two to six inches wide, with a apace between corresponding with the width and sloping enough to pass the water to a conductor, that ma,y be a trough fastened to i either side to support the grate, and conduct : the w ater to a vessel. Across the tirst tier of troughs placu two or three shits one inch or; one-half inch thick, then over the space be-' tween the first tier place another tier of; "troughs, that no water chii drop from the ice , hch'W the troughs, thus giving a free chance for the heated air to riM-, and the cold from the ice to pass down, causing the space undeneath to be cold and dry, which will preserve , most of the necessaries, such as vegetables,: u. cat, fish, milk and bread: and the luxuries, as pa-try, fruit, sauce, oyster-, &c; and the ii.it. r tiniw suved will furnish most fainilies with the purest soft water for drinking j.tirposes. entilale o er tlie ice ut lea-t one square inch to twenty-five. 'overing the ice with a flannel cloth or ! e d" carpi t will keep it still longer. Avoid the us,- of jdnc or other metal, as Ice will keep much longer King on wood, l'ruit dealers might construct the troughs in a room of the sie they requite, ;;t a small expense and great benefit, and dairy nu n also. 'The great error has been in placing the u c in the bottom of air-tight metallic-boxes, and nutting the articles to be preserved over the ice, which is like puttinga furnace in thegnriet j to warm the house. 1 have found ice to keep i the greatest length of time covered about oneij inch thick with sawdust. Cover it a foot deep, and it will melt at once. j "The cleanest ice i- generally obtained ' from running water, or hikes, a distance from ; the shore. As the surface ivater runs into small ponds, it cannot but freeze to form the : ice. lhit w hen the surface w ater flows into a running stream, it causes the current to quick-! en, and thus prevents the ice from forming un- '. til the surface watt r has passed down and the ( water becomes still, and the stream only fed tiom its spiings of pine water. j "Fit czn g appeals to soften all water alike. ' so it is not essential to pet ice from soft water, : "11. W. Sa.ur. j "ItoriiKvrKK.Oct. 2.", 1.V." FARM IKH SKS. A gooil farui-lirtiise if tn' essential ot" micccsht'ul fann-lil'o. The tanner wants a comfortat.lt home, whore hiiiifelf and family c le ecure from the rairie 1. lasts of winter 1 mul the tl;m.i exhalations of the rainy season, t He wants such a home for health, for comfort ami for improvement. It need not he a al- j cee nor a costly stnicture. But it should he ' healthv, convenient and comfortable. To he healthy it should I e dry and warm, and at j the same time well ventilated. To be dry it ' must be set some foot above the ground, and j bad and unwholsome air should ut be allow-i cd to stagnate tinder it. The most of the J fann-lii uses in the "West aio set too low. j Their ground floors are but just above the; ground. Perhaps on a low. Hat. wet prairie the dWr will not be more than one foot above ground. In suchcascther!oorcan seldom be dry. Dampness creeps up the walls and ceiliujIS the floors are not tight; the bad air rising from the vegetable mould decaying under the hou-e, rises np damp and unhealthy, to penetrate the whole house. In such houses people live, ami with them closed up, sleep; and then wonder why they have so much sicklies. Over almost the entire Western country the houses should be set ut least four feet alove the ground. The lower floors should bo air tight, and the vacant space under the floor w ell ventilated. It is best that people should sleep somewhat above the soil. CTiamtors are the best for sleeping rooms if they are roomy ai d airv. At all events no one should sleep near the ground if lit can get somewhat above it. A tight roof, a tight floor, and a good elevation alove the ground are three essentials of a farmer's house. Without these he is very liable to sickness. He is all the time taking in the seeds of disease. Let all house builders reflect before they build. Valley Farmtr. Another: by the poisition of the air-cell at the but end of the egg those may be selected that will produce the male sex; iu these the air cell is in the centre cf the end. If the cell be a little on one side, the egg will produce a female chick. The position of the air-cell is easily discovered by holding the egg between the eye and a light. Farmers' Journal.
