Address on the Utility of Tobacco Delivered lj M. C. Stevehs, before the Wayne Ci.vnty Teachers' Association, at Kickwon't, U th mo. 27M, 1C55. PI'HttilfEO BT OBDEH OF TUB ASSOCIATION. It U a faroritd notion with many, and I trust it is a correct one, tbat God, has created noth- ; - -, vir. If this is to, of eourn tobacco sac-; have some us; and we shall be well tm-pk-yvl in Crt'ling out what it is, especially if v. fan induce r-op! to appreciate the use for r-'-'-.lx it wa.t ioteti-vd. I; will be necessary, in the first place, to r li.niaa'e Irora the list of uses, those to which it is erronioukly applied. Let us, for a moment, consider its nature. It is a well ascertained fact that tobocco is one of the most active vegetable poisons we have. A single Irop of the oil of it, is suficient to kill a full grown cat. Isowitis well known tbat this aiiimal is very tenacious of life. I have known them to endure very severe blows on the head without Apparent injury. Experiments have been tried upon other animals betides cats, all go to show that tobacco is a very active poison. Now let us consider what iU effect js on the human system when used for rointj and chewinjj. As it is a poison and also very disagreeable t the unpervertedtaste.it lias at first to be used in small quantities. After a time the sy6lem l-ecomes hardened to it and the amount may be increased without wmedia'e fatal consequences. And it is alo said by thoe who have tried the experiment, that the table will at last become no perverted tlii. it U a luoious morsel. I have said that after the system becomes hardened to it, the amount may be increased. Now I am confident that this hardening process ii very injurious; for the nerves must became deadened by it, and many of the fmcr feelings of our nature are thus blunted. The consequence is that in time the nervous system becomes completely deranged, the ) and tremulous, and the individual finds hirae!f irritable and peevish. Now as an appev. c for tlii vilo weed in wholly artificial, we conclude it never was inadu to chew or use in any way as a luxury. J cn.upM llie aiiaOCiailon WUl UlUUIije mom f, .v.;oflerinjj a few reflections upon its use in this iiinnner. Smokinirand chewintr havebecome ro common hit I have about come to the concluaiun tLat the vi!d arising therefrom ar ffTealwr tlian those arising from the use of intoxicutiujr drinks. Ami why is it that so many become eu- j fclavr-d to it? lean find no reason except that i boys usually think it is sumrt to be squirting tobacco saturated saliva about cn the floor! TLt-y scera to think it -will make men of them tj pall a ciyar! JJut iii this they are mibtaln. l or in whatvrer form it is used, the 1'ftbit is a fiiltliy one, besides bting in direct iulftion of all tho instincts of animal life. A j i-rji n -with a clean mouth revolts at tha idea of making it a receptaclo for the black and filthy Muff. And even fthould we take a person thus adtilcted and cleanse his mouth, and then place him in the society of those who use u, he will be very likely to think himself in a very filthy company. It is not the taste a!-i:e that revolts; the eye turns from it iu di-iust, and so also with the unaccustomed nn--.il s'-ru-e. But how many there are who f- to think thai every one they meet can epihire their perfumery. A few days ago r'iii'e ihiing in the cars I was saluted, with a S'j'ti-l cf .-aliva, which by its dak color in-.iu3w-l me to hvlieve it was k'Tongly impreg- ' TiTTwTtli t GTacco. This was about as much a ; 1 vv i.-ihed to edure; but to cap the climax, - -e K.it a very polite gentleman by the stove tv.u vou'i-I not do so vile an act as to spit on : !c f;.")r, Im: ho kept depositing largo quanti:.e : on he stove. JS'ow raw tobacco juice is r j much as 1 wish to endure, but when we c.-.ine to cook it, the odor is altogether too stj.ory far my olfactories. It is frequently the case that ladies get their i silk dresses bespatiered wiih tobacco juice. j Vtt '.here are very rcany ladies who say they ! aru willing for the gentlemen to smoke and chew because it is a pleasure to them. Perhaps theso ladies will bo a little jealous when t!:- y are informed that I know of gentlemen w! o ay they take more eomfort with their cicak.i than they do in the society of their xcives. Is'ow I believe if the ladies were to say that they would not associate with those who r jke and chaw, we should very soon find this article a drug in our markets; but so long as they countenance it, we may expect it will be U"ed, and tbey may expect to be spit upon now r.ml then, and also be obliged when ridinj ia our lai'road cars to endure- the odor of ccokwd tobacco juice. Tcbacco is carried in circulation through the y-tem and exudes from the pores of the skin, so that the bed linen of the immoderate user becomes scented and even colored with it. It is said that canibals detect the tobacco user by tho flavor of the flesh, and they throw it aside as wcrthless. Should the hog become add'rttd to its use, (I have a better opinion of this animal, and it is s slander on his fair name to make such a supposition,) his carcass would lie neglected. Even the most devoted tobacco user would sav, "I'd rather bo excused froC. the savory ilisli." Since turn tobacco is carried in the circulation through th? system and manifests itself in the bod linen, we naturally conclude that a person thus addicted must be a very ayreeall bed fellow! And then his breath, how much a young lady mustadmire its perfume! Again, Low ni'-e it looks to see a young man with its golden juk" streaming down the corners of his mouth' llow nice it looks to see a young man prepare fr dinner by taking from his month a large quid, and satVly deposit it in fci-vet wket, and when, dinner is over see Liai hum up the precious morsel and replace it in his ly.-mth, and subject it to a second grinding! llow nice it looks to see a young nna ejecting from his mouth the dark colored juico, which falling by his side soon comes near floating his chair! These are but few of the beauties of tobacco using, but it seems to me they are enough to convince any one of the improprieties of its use. Could I by the nse of language convince the whole universe of this, and cause its use to be abandoned, I should feel that I was doing aa act more to be applauded than that done by Washington in achieving the independence of our country. To all addicted to it use, I would say: leave off at once. "Now is the only acceptable time, now is the day of salvation." fxycxrrKD nxxt vrm. rou SALE.
