Although there has been much written on j the esstern origin of this jjrain, it did not! f row on that part of the Asia wa'.ered by the j ndusatthe time of Alexander the Great's, expedition, as it is among the productions of ilie country mentioned by Nearehus, the ' commander of the fleet; neither is it policed j by Arian, Diodorus, Columella, nor any oth-j er ancient author; and eren as late as 1491,1 the yoar before Columbus d scorered Amer-1 ica, Joan di Cuba, in his "Ortus Saniutis," ; make no mention of it. It has never been lounain any ancient lumuius, sarcopnagus or pyramid, nor has it ever been represented on any ancient painting, sculpture, or work ofi art, except in America. But ia this country, I according to Oarcilaso do la Vega, one of the ' ancient l'eruvian historians, the palace gar-: dens of the Incas, in Peru, were ornamented j with maize in gold and silver, with all the! grains, spikes, stalks and leaves; and in one j instance, iit the "garden of gold and silver," j there wait au entire corniicld, of considerable j hi 7", representing the maize in its exact and n.itural shape; a proof no ! of the wealth : of tho Incas than their veneration for this j important grain. In further proof of the American origin, it: may he stated that this plant is still found growing in a wild state from the Rocky Mountains, in North America, to the humid forests of Paraguay, wlieie instead of having each gmin naked, as is always the case after ( loDg cultivation, it is completely covered will! : glumes or hu.sk. It is furthermore, a well authenticated faet that maize was found in a 'ktato f cultivation by the aborigines, in the Inland of Cuba, vn iu discovery by Columbus, us well as in most other places in America, first explored by Americans. The Made of the plant are of great value as food for stock, and is an article but rarely estimated aulTiciently, when considering of the agricul- j tural products of the Southern and Western States especially' 1 ' . the increase of production from 1840 to ISo'J was 21 4,000, WO bushel? equal to fifty; ix percent. ,, .? . The produce of New England has advanced from 6,993,000 to 10,377.000 bushels, near'y 60 per cent; New-York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland increased 'Jt,8 13,000 bushels, more than 50 percent. In the production of thi crop no htate has retrograded. Ohio which in 1840 occupied th fourth place as a corn producing Slate, now ranks as the first. Kentucky is second, Illiiii.iis third and Tennessee fourth. The crop of Illinois has increased from 2,000,000 to 5.500,000 bushels, or at tho raw of 1G0 per cent, in ten years. Of the numerous varieties some are best adapted to the Southern States, while others are bettor suited for the Northern and Eastern.
