Ada., a. lUe C.lti-ie of theCraoUerry. BY JOHH A. BCKBAKK, KSQ- ,:, -r?-7 in AW 0 M. Awm ?wnti;e: lf" the State Board of Agriculture, January 4, 1855. GrsTLRHKS or thi Stat Board of Agei-trLTt-RE: Our subject embraces two primary iiviiona: First, the cranberry in general, and tvhal is known by the labor of others in us oul:ivatioD;nd secondly, the cranberry region of Indiana, the facilities of our Slate for its f-ul ivatiun, and something of what Te have lone in the prof-ecution of this valuable but needed branch of agriculture. : The first division of our subject is but littl !. than a literal quotation of what is deemed valuable in the able report of Secretary Flint c the Massachusetts State Board of Agriculiro, interspersed with information derived t ,ra other sources thus gathering together scattered shreds of information, and rendering them compaet and accessible. That information upon this subject has been eretofore so meagre and unsatisfactory that ,ur own State has every facility for the suc-vssful-cultivation of the cranberry and the ataral desire to remove some obstructions, iowevc-r feebly and imperfectly, from the nth of those who may succeed us in this en-! icnuise, must be our apology for the magni- i . v ii of the task before us, as well as the manitr of iu execution. The commoa American cranberry U a Naof North America. It grows and rlourI si ic in mossy swamps and bogs, as well as ;.i Handy soils, from high northern latitudes to North Carolina on the south, and to Minnesota on the west. The stem of this species is larger than that of the small or European cranberry, and is .oiBiuonly from a fool to four or live feet in length. It is sometimes much longer, throwing up many rising branches, sometimes to he h.-ight of eightor ten inches. The loaves n o about one-half an inch long, and nearly mc-fourth of an inch broad, the second year, when full grown. On the new spring branches, which bear the flowers and berries, they ire ciowded towards the top. The flowers tro frequently in pairs, very elegant, held to vai ,l.s the end of the new spring branches by "r -ct, reddish stalks, much bent near the ends giving them, together with the calix and flower bud, before expanding, the appearanceof a nine's neck, head and bill, whence it derives .ts iiiuae, craneberry or cranberry. The flowers continue to grow until imma- , lire berries are produced on the stem in July, .iid m some instance even into August. The; j. rrii-a are of a yellowish yreen bpforo ripen- j n -r, and when ripe are of a bright scarkt or j 'i?ii'!! co or. and m Rome varieties ntariv : !., or light and speckled with Jetp red, .".ryinrc in )iape from round to oval oblong, ,b.ut one-half of an inch in diameter, of an ";m-itb!o acid taste, and often cliuging to the . mos tim ing the whole winter. It grown natirn!ly in watery bogs and morasses, and o;i (.-Mines ou hih mountains. Itgrowailuxiri.tntly on niarKhes exposed to and covered y high tides on coarse pand, perfectly white uul t-iiiiit- ly destitute of organic matter of any a'md, though accetible to moisture on pino K-itt on i.eat covered with sand on dry, .,i;niiy, and gravelly upland aud on the rich- j ' ;;?irdt'!j mold, thoroughly tilled. ASALian. A vulaable analysis of this fruit lias recently been made by l'rof. E. N. Horsford, of Citin-iti-lgM. From this analysis it appears that the ,iT ventage oi water is uu.ro ( Vr rentage of ash, 17) Voo ly fibre, tissues, organic acids, and j otherorganic matter, uot decomposed, 1 1.15 j 100.0O I'lom this analysis it will be seen that only :i hundredths per cent., or less than twoontlss of one per cent, of cranberry, is found i the ajsli, as inorganic matter, derived from soil, all the rest being derived from the at-! iospii'Te ana irom water. Ti e results of experience are therefore stri"o'y corroborated by the deductions of sci-K-e, that the cranberry will grow where uo,iing else will. It explains, too, how it is i:. this fruit seems to require nothing for its erfeot development but air aud water. MODE OF CCLTI VATIOX. The cranberry may be propagated from the i'.-d, or from cuttings, or by transplanting. i'i'O first crop obtained by planting the seed, vili ordinarily be a year or two later than that r vhu-ed by the wild plants transplanted. It i therefore found to be more profitable to r.tnp!ant, except in one or two sections of the 'Cute, where the interest in transplanting has so groat that jilO a square rod is not an 'iruvmnmn price for plants, where the ground s thickly covered. AVIaio it is desired to propogate by slips or i i i uUuiir, the usual practice is to gather a large i UHuiiiy of vines, and run them through a ' uiiinion hay cutter, till they are reduced to the t .ength desired art inch or so when they nay be sown broadcast and harrowed in; tho' i , is considered best, on some accounts, to sow j n drills and cover properly. These slips i cry soon take root, starting from the base of he loaves, and at the same time shooting up i nany ri -ing- branches. ' ! If sown broadcast and harrowed, they hould not be overflowed till lie' slips have akon root, as othetwise, many remaining un-; rovered- will be floated otf. 1 lit tlie ease of cranberries growing wild, id s a common and well-known practice to flow ' r cover them with water during the wiuter ind caily spring. This is very desirable, sf he situation is such as to allow it, though it j s n.-'t generally considered essential by those j ivh.t have been most successful. It is often : iiV'ful, where there are facilitiea for flowing, ' o let the water Teraain a few inches deep till j 'ho spring is well advanced (some think till , 'to hrst of May, or even later,) to retard the Shwsominsr till there is no dansrer from frosts, i :'ciliuos for flowing are desirable in the culti- " -ation of cranberries also; and if the planU- ( non coma be so arranged aa to now very , luicsiv. it mignt De oi essential service, oc- ? oa-jionallj", during the spring1 or autumn. As the cranberry, in iu natural state. Is .uore frequently found growing in a low, wet "iWHillD or marsh, that kind of land is feneral-
iy e lected for ia cultivation. The mode of baer over them, and serve with boiled or cold ri'.un out the cranberry in such a swamp, if for Utile dessert, put batter with grated -e suppoe it to be covered with bushes aad nutmeg, with syrup or sarar over. ;ras, and surrounded by a sandy soil, or in j To PkivSKRvk Strawberries Whoi. Anne immediate neighborhood of sand would i ocher excellent war is t make the svrun boil-

It is desirable that the surface of die sand should be raised but slightly above the level of the water of the swamp, meadow or pond filled up, so that, by digging into the sand with the hand or the hoe, the water may lo found within two or thee inches of the surface. t" The plants should be taken up with the spade in square turfs of the thickness of two or three inchest, this being the depth to which
the roots generally descend. When the ground has been leveled and prepared as directed above, it will be found more convenient to draw straight lines, and set the roots abwtt eighteen inches apart one way, and erne foot the other, in small clusters of about fire or six together, the grasses taken up with them in the turf having first been removed from them. The practice of some has been to set the turf, thus taken up, into the row without removing the grass; but the vines are so tenacious of life that there is little danger of their dying, evea if all their natural earth is removed from their root, and those who have followed this method have generally less trouble in the subsequent cultivation. ? t Some prefer to set them in rows at a greater distance apart, having the rows two and a half or three feet, and the plants one foot in the row.. If the sand is thick and loose, so
as to make it impracticable to cultivate tne vines and pull up the grasses and weeds, on account of the danger of starting the roots. the closer the plants are set the better; since thev will thus sooner cover the ground,' and ; get" the advantage of the grasses,, 'Where it P . . , p . .t i . - ... u is not intended to hoe the plants in such situations. a foot each wav will probably be the moyt convenient distance between the plants. The cost in such cases varies frrm It 0 to 84'JO per acre. Under the most favorable cir- j cumstances, I have never known an acre to fall below 8125, and that, too, where it has been prepared in the most economical way, i all the labor being performed by the owner himself. The cost, including the original preparation by paring, ficing. filling with sand, procuring and setting out the roots, has more frequently been 83UO per acre. The rule may not lold good in every instance, but in nine out of en it will. When tho colt gets to be three veeks old, or as soon as ii is perfectly straight- . ned in its limbs, measure from the edge of the isir on the hoofs to the mi.idle of the first oint, and for every iucli it will grow to the leight of a hand of four inches, when its ;rowth is matured. Thus if the distance be bund sixteen inches, it will make a horse sixeen hands high.
