Tlie Dlss7eftcea4 What Stake i- v't I Scarcely any tody lias (ailed to notice howi one iarmt-ris always up with ti work, and j has fevrj llingf done at th proper time, while -mother who teem equally busy and industrious is generally "behind hand." seldom getting a thing done jat when it nhould l. One will always be fcugenerally in a Lurry, and "yet st-ema to ppogres lut poorly with hia bu-r-jness; while another, who appears to take the world ensy, doe a surprising amount of work. We hare known men who worked early and Ute, and seemed always to have able hands and a willing heart, but who. nerertheless.gct but little done. Of such a one, his neighbors will say. "he don't get along with his work." But why it is. they hardly can ttll. j There are, no doubt, different cause at tho bottom of this characteristic deCciency which j so much distinguishes one farmer frornanC'.h- j cr; but certainly no one holds a more proini-, nent place than the want or neglect of planning beforehand. Every one should decide in his . mind during the winter or before, what he in-( f -nds doing the coming spring and lumraw. ! lie should count his means aud his forces, and . then plan out just so much work as he can do in time and in order, and no more. When Spring arrive he has then nothing to do but go to work. This kind of planning is of great importance, bat still far less than to know before the dawn of each day, before it arme-, what kind of work that day is to be devoted to. Though it may seem a small matter, it is , doubtless of the greatest importance for every j farmor who depend mainly on his own hands for the performance of his work, to decide, nt least before he arises from his bifid in the ' morning, what shall that day be done. We have ende-ivored to follow this practice to j some extent for years, and have seldom failed to remark that if we neglected to do so, or j commenced the day undecided, our work that j day did not prosper. j Among the valuable things we learned j when a boy, from "Kirkham's Grammar," was j that he who every morning plans the tranfac- i tions of the day, and follows out that plan, j carries on a thread that will guide him thro' i the labyrinth of a most busy, and we will add, a most iitcretrjul "life." And Franklin civ Thrifty or some other "Almanac maker" long j
since advised us that if we would prosper, some such course must be pursued. Another cause of the slow progress which some men make, is that they seem Pi mistake hurry for speed. They go to work as if everything depended on their activity, hardly knowing half the time what they are about, and tho consequence is, that half their steps ate taken in vain, and half their exertions are lost for want of being made judiciously. j It "vas a favorite maxim of one whose ; whole life was marked by one continued series j of achievements, "Be a whole man to one j thing at a time." Put your undivided atten- j tion to whatever you undertake, and do tiotj have half a dozen jobs on hand at ont e. Un- j dwiake but one thin'' at a time, and do not' jo to another till that is accomplished. A ! i neglect to fo low this rule, is the cause of many ; perplexities, losses and disappointments. t j From tho Indiana Farmer. I Eos. Farmer: It is truly gratifying to see j the interest that is manifested, of late by Western farmers, on the subject of fruit. But aj u-w years suite the nursery men oi Wayne County could not find a home market for their trie. Now thousands of apple, cherrr and pear trees are shipped into the county from ' New Yoik and other States. And still the di maud is not supplied. With all these flat-1 tering pro.-pec t to the lover of fruit and pro- j ie-s. yet any one who travels over the coiin- j iy wkl. hiseyeopen will find many farms on tiii h the proprietors lack much of living up M the privileges that they might enjoy in the j bountiful luxury of good fruit. I have se - oral farmers in my mind who fall far short of! hi-ing model horticulturists, yet I forbear to ' mention their names, hoping that they will j icloim when they have purchased all the land j that lies adjoining them. ; Wih all the inquiry after fruits there is not enough interest Ukt-a to procure and cultivate ! .3 . . .. -as . good cnerry ana pear trees, wary varieties of cherries would do well in this regiou. And certainly time and money can not be better expended than for the purpose of obtaining a full supply of this choice fruit in its season. Pears, tho' the trees are liable to be destroyed from several cause, yet if one tree out of ten that is planted lives and bears, the owner is well paid for his outlay. In many of the largest orchards of the country, not t half dozen apple trees, bearing summer and fall fruits, are to be found, nearly all being winter fruit, consequently in the warm seasons of the year, when fruits are most relished, many farmer are deprived of the luxury of the luscious apples of the season. Why should this be so. I know of no other reason than that these old orchards were planted when but little attention was paid to the cultivation of early apples, therefore, early trees were not planted. Now the owners of these old orchards think that they are too old to plant young trees, as they will not, in all probability, live to enjoy the "fruit of their labor. I know an old fogy farmer who, twenty years ago owned nothing Iff the shape of an orchard but a few seedling sppl trees. One of his neighbors who was then planting a young orchard, advised him to go and do likewise, but he pkad age in extenuation of his crime, and planted no trees. Time passed on, (as it is almot certain to do, ) and ten years after the first orchard was planted by the friend of the aged farmer, when he was about planting a second orchard he again advised our hero to plant an orchard. This time h took the advice, and for the last fix rears ha been enjoying the fruit of his labor m the shape, ot Yellow Bellflowers. Holland Pippins and. Golden Russets. In all probability; twenty years hence, this same ok! farmer will be found abhs to eat apples and bless the memory of the friend who advised him to plant an orchard. A to the friend, he ha year ago gone to the land of spirit, and if hi good spirit is allowed to revisit tne scenes oi nis nre on earcn. f. I am sura h does not review with regret, the j in'erest he took in horticulture, for which hisj children and his children children should rise ; up and call him blessed. Jacksonburg. March. S. S. 'It may fceawd raavy remain a general truth, that, in the language of the Chairman of the Hampshire County Committee of last year, No one breed is beet adapted to all locations and circumstances. It can hardly be credited, however, for a moment, that the answers to inquiries of the United States Commissioner of 1 'ale nts, some two years ago. making a different and distinct breed necessary for almost every State, are to be taken as literally true. " May it not be fairly questioned whether there are really as many distinct breeds of swine as there appear to be? f And might not a bet'er knowledge of animal 'physiology ai l us in ' accounting for the fact that different breeds of swine are so often re;;ommend-d for the same or a neighboring I x-ality? Or to be more explicit, has it not of en been found true, that of the same litter of pigs some die and some live and of those that live, a part shall do well and the rest shall not? 'The best breeds for the climate are the Wobtirn and Grazier;' Missis sippi says, ' l he best hogs 1 hvn tried are the BerksSres;' Texas. 'Irish Grazier;' Tennessee says. 'The common old Grazier mixed with tlte Hindoo breed." j And without following i the lancuatre too literally, it may be added. that while Kentucky is salil-fied with the "Wohum' only, her more voracious neighbor, ; n l,wi muet. r,.. ft.. .r..;.m(' .R..,1(.l , . , ii . j . .r, t .. , i i-i - eviunese, ana ine -aicutta; ana wnue mis- , sourt takes a cross of the "black Berkshire and the 'white Irish.' Florida says that 'for the range, or shift-for-yonrelf system, the : long noeu Pike stands AJNo. 1. And when it appears as it does from the sam's source, that a hundred pounds of corn yield in some cases 'but eight pounds of pork,' and in others 'forty pounds,' it would seem that there must be something more than the peculiarities of breed to be taken into the account inexplainitigthese results. Nor indeed, let it be distinctly understood, that the accidents ot diseased organs, etc., referred to, would account for all this variety of opinion; and least of all would we intimate that gentlemen answer the Commissioner without suitable reflection. But great as is the confusion and apparent number of breeds, and the mixing up of breeds, there might be found to be less ot both, we think, if the 'accidents , were fewer, or if we were better able to de- j tect them. j It is a fair question, and an important one to begin with. What and how man breeds j of hogs are there really distinct? Some are j so, clearly but the question is not easily de- j termined, and no discussion of it is proposed i in this report. The generally received opin-i ion is, that the Suffolk is a dis'inct, original breed. Let it be so considered. Now, is it the best breed for irenernl use in the county of Esex? i7 not. even though it is true that the pork of this breed is much esteemed, and generally commands from one to twe cents, uuilta t AVIts III uviiiv i it 11 1 La I n V al. a uv i i.- -v s a is obvious; they come to maturity t a very early age, and never, or rrtrely weigh more than 250 to 3K pmnds. There is a real diiliculty in keeping them from taking on fat, it is said, in order to their getting any considerable growth at all. Dr. J. Kittredge infor-' med tho Committee, while examin'ng his pure SufMk boars, that he could with difficulty ke-p them low enough in flesh to answer for breeders or to bring to the show. Their keep- ; ing had been one quart of meal a day. w ith , tho house slops, and raw apples, both sweet ' and sour; and upon this keeping they were fat. ' notwithstanding tho large one had served f.r forty-two sows, and the small one for twenty to thirty, since last spring. It seems therefore now clear, that the Suffolks, being easy to fat, (indeed, being always tat, it is said, , after betng a month old,) are a suitable breed to cross With. The OnlV remaining difficulty is. to knOW j l i. .t i t ' -.1, d Obtain the breed for Crossing With an them. And lust, itanould not be the ciiinese. because they incline to fatten too much on the belly and too little on the back, and besides, ; according to Youatt, they are to oi!y, and do not make good bacon. Neither should they j cross with either the Berkshire or Byfield, be- j cause both are too small and snug boned, to make a large hog. But probably, to'' put a I case within the reach of all. almost any of the lanre kind, 'old-fashioned kind,' would j make a good crossing with the Suffolk."
