Plasat roar Cn Karir. ' For many years past we bare carefully - notjd the difference between arly and late plant ed corn, and our observation bare fair.y convinced us that in nine cases out of tea, the foraier Las a decided preference but for what reason ve may not be able clearly to explain. We incline to the opinion, however, that it is ;nmethinff lite this: Earlv planted corn haa a -.-nance to strike its roots deep into the soil. ar,d j is thus better enabled to withstand a drouth or? ,ick of moisture, which usually begins near he same time in the season each 3 ear. Or it may be that the crop baring a longer time to aature in, is able the better to take advantage A everything in its favor. But whatever may 01 the cause, we have no hesitation in recommending that corn be planted ra this latitude as soon as the ground is warm enough to prout it. It might be remarked that should the season Ite uniformly favorable, little r no difference .night be perceived. , Or should a severe Irouth occur just at the earing time of an early planted field, the yield might vW less than Lat of one planted later, but such cases are not common, and it is easily seen that in the former ca.se there is nothing lost, and in the latter a drouth is about as likely to occur when : late planted field is earing;, as At the earing time ol one a little earlier. I From our boyhood days we have noticed :hat those farmers who wero unirrsally looked to us the best aud most prosperous, planted iheir corn early, sometimes finishing in April. Of course nobody raised- better corn. Late iroats seldom or never kill early corn; if they chance to cut it down, it comes again, the root not killed. ' Corn should be planted by the ' is middle of 5tb month (May.) and we would prefc-r that it be done sooner rather than later, if the spring is not unusually backward. Location of the Slate Fair. j The Executive committee of the State Board of Agriculture met at Indianapolis on Mon- : Jay last, aud determined by resolution to hold ! the next State Fair at the Capital, provided 5 1, COO were paid by the citizens of Indianapolis, and 81,000 by the Marion County Agricultural Society towards putting tip a permanent fence around the military grounds in. that city, for the usoof the Fair; and provided further that a fait and reasonable arrangement could bo made with the various I tail road Companies and keepers of betels and boardinghouses. If all these conditions are ooni plied . with, it is proposed to hold the Fair three j t ars out of four in Indianapolis. ; f j The premium list will be issued as soon as the nbove terms are complied with, which has j to bo don within ten days from this time.. Flanting Totato reelius. We have recently been attracted y an articlo iu the "Soil of the South," to the following tiled: A negro boy was sent to empty some potato peeh ngs in the piggery, but before doing it. ho selected all tire eyes," and planted them iu the fence comer. The result was, that at digging time he had near a bushel of potatoes, larger and better than those of his master raifod from whole potatoes and with "guanner." On mentioning the subject to an Englishman, he assured us that whole potatoes were never planted in the district from whii h he emigrated-i-nothing but the eyes. The!o were cutoff tins tuber, with more of the 'lofa'.o, however, than is nsnwlly taken off with '.e peeling, and planted in highly manured and well prepared soil, and large crops of the very host of potatoes' are the result. The retii.iiader of the potato is prepared for the tableWe are not ready to adopt the theory that iho eye of the potato, taken off like a peeling, will produce as many and as largo potatoes as if th. whole tuber were planted, other things being etiual. But the facts in the case are interoiing, and as seed potatoes will undoubtedly be scarce tlia presentapting, itwill be agood time to make the experiment. We have been always in favor of planting the largest potatoes, with very little cutting, but we bava recently noticed an account f ease where small tubers produced quite as good, perhaps a better crop than large ones. And if small potatoes will produce large ones, why may not ihe eyes of the large ones do tha same? We j have at least the advantage, of the best tubers ! if there is any superiority in the quality of lsrge potatoes for seed over small ones a fact generally admitted, and which is one of the strongest arguments ia their iavor. The other is that their sire enables the youngshoots to make a more vigorous growth in a shcrt spaeo of time. But when we remember that potatoes the size of a hen egg are often produced in one season from the sred there may not be so mucb advantage in the having a large piece of the tuber planted with the eye, as we have been supposing. 1 Wheu potatoes are two dollars a bushel, t not much could bo lost by planting a few peelings for an experiment. The ground should of course be higUy manured, and the plants well tended." Let at least a few rows be planted beside the ordinary crop, and the result carefully noted.-, .Try it, and let us hear from 1 . i i i you. " - t ; ;i , l-i"w Wanted. - We always like to see an enterprising spirit amonsr farmers, but we sometimes notice them making preparations for something which one is a little puzzled clearly to understand. Sometimes, too, their movements axe began at an unusual season of the year. For Instance, we are always pleased to see a farmer, when his old frame house begins to look dilapidated, going to work in good earnest to make brick for a new one. But , then if he haa a good brick bouse, where is the use of another. And then he should not devote a whole field to a mortar bed. And he should delay operations till after harvesC especially be should not commence making mortar as soon as the . ground tbawa .out ia. the spring. We have noticed since the breaking; of winter 'that several good fanner have their caule, horses, etc..' on their fields, tramping them into mortar beds, and hardly could tell what it meant, especially as some of them do not seem to need new houses. , A little information, is deFired.

With unrotted straw the case may be different though we have often applied half-rotted straw, from the cow yard, to potatoes in the roe, with any thing but bal results. Our knowledge of agriculture is founded on facts, rather than philosophy, and hence our mode of reasoning. MILK I.N BREAD. W are sometimes forced to confess ourselves deficient in patience, when we read some of the deliberate assertions of scientitiio men. They pronounce, as from "the scat of power, and the centre of all wisdom, in favor of this, and that, the other, in the very teeth of a general and almost universal experience. We are compelled to place a very few of the solemn annonncements, even of the great Liebig, in this category. He has proclaimed that bread is rentleioJ unhealthy by being moistened with milk, and though we cannot at this moment cite Ins words, there is no doubt that he intends to teach tiiis doctrin?. Many of our journals have copied his language, and also the following, without comment, which we regard as, at least, a partial sanction of it: Milk in Bksad. I have more objections than one to milk in bread, but the most serious is that persons of advanced age, who are in the daily ue of milk-mad bread, will be expected to suffer from an over supply of osseous or bony matter, and particularly if their kidneys are affected. Bread should always lie made with wa'.er, and when so made it is suitable for the aed and the young, the .k-k and the well. And as for sour milk, a microscopic view would, I presume, present additional arguments against its ue. Water Cure Juur. .Now, whatever may be said on this wise, wo can not hesitate to pronounce the principle here inculcated, as a general proposition, in our opinion, utterly at variance with truth.; We doubt not that there are persons, of all j r aes, who can not digest milk, even when diluted. We have seen infants in that condition.
