THE PALLADIUM.
: - Vcdnrtlay, October 23, Agricultural Society f,ir Wayne Coun- j ty. We have been requested to call the ' attention of our fanners and Mechanics to the propriety of establishing an Agricultural and Mechanical .Society in this coun- j ty. W e would take the more pleasure in ! doing so, if we were confident such an ' ellbrt would be successful. All intelligent farmers and mechanics acknowledge the '. benefits which invariably result from such associations; but in our countv they have not carried out, practically, that winch ..,'.-. I i . nerifncjal. We have not time or r'lom to enlarge upon trie great advantages which would result to our community from the establishment of such a Society: but will merelv sujget that a meeting be hell in this place on Saturday, the second day of Xuvember next for trie purpose of taking the matter into consideration. Should it be deemed expedient to form such a society, the next meeting can be held in L'cnti eville another in Cambridge, at such other points in tiie county as may be deemed expedient. To s"eure tiie advantages of the statute of this State, incorporating Agrieultura .Societies, it is necessary t hold the meeting for tiie org ml, ition at the county seat. The present law is perhaps well enough f-r as it goes; but further legislation is necessary and demanded by the great interests of agriculture. Such legislation i i i u i 7 . i should be had tins winter, an I we nope nur Governor will call the attention of the legislature to that matter in strong terms in his annual mess ige. In anticipation of til0 revision of the law there can he no . , , , ., r . objection to boi ling tne first meeting in " this place; or if thought expedient it may be held at Centrev i!!e. The present law. provides that whenCver anv twenty or more citizens of the county meet at the county seat, thev can organize a society, and assume corporate and politic powers. Public notice has to be given of the intended meeting, signed bv three free holders, and published three weeks. The officers have to consist of a president. I vice president, treasurer, secretary and seven directors, and such subordinate .1 i 11 o r .- . ofboers as the Uoard shad from tune to time deem necessary. I lie treasurer to ;v tmn.l Before an election is had for officers. the fee ot memhership must ho l.xed. wliich is not to be less than one dollar nor : more than five dollars ner v ;r. May receive and dispose of donati.ns of land or other property, but cannot hold real estate to a grerter value than Si-ioo for more tKm months -d 'u ,or niorc to an m. mon i,i-. provisions in the law. Tiie whole matter ' however should be revised, an-l we believe appropriations sh nil 1 he made from1 tiie .State Treasury to ni l in the payment of premiums &c. Agriculture and tiie Mechanic arts are the great and important interests of our State, and surely to foster and encourage them is a legitimate power or function of tiie government. j. emember on the first Saturday of November it is proposed to hold a meeting in this place for the purpose of forming an Agricultural Society. --- California Items. ----- We regret to learn by the Wayne Co. <Whig> that DANIEL LAUTZ [LANTZ], who left Centreville last Spring for California, died at Salt Lake. Mr. Lautz [LANTZ] was an honest, industrious man, and was acquiring at his business a competency before he left home home on account of ill-health. A correspondent of the Brookviile American says: "Geo. Parry, of Richmond. is doing a profitable business in the dry goods trade, as he deserves to do, for he is an honorable man." A letter from San Francisco, of 31st August, mentions and invoice of <House Frames> lately arrived there from Baltimore, invoice cost, $3500;: freight $1200 —they were sold to pay charge, and only brought $550. This is not very favorable to shippers of houses. The Crescent City arrived at N. York on the 18th inst. She bro't one million in gold dust in the hands of passengers, and $22,000 as freight. The steam-ship Minesso, arrived at Panama on the 4th inst., with one million in gold as freight. <Overland Emigration>.—.Letters from Fort Laramie of date August 26th, state that at the time of emigration has almost men 2,500; children 6--— horses 23,000; mules 8000 : oxen 36,000: cows 7000; waons 9000. It is said that at least one- fifth of the emigrants did not register their names. It is also stated that one thousand names would not cover the number of deaths between Missouri and the Sacramento valley.
