For the l'u Hail mm. i MtMrt. Editor: Self defence is said to be "the first law of nature," aclifig under this brc- I lief I hars determined to make a sliort defence of what I said in a former article, and a brief I reply loan article which appeared in your last I aver the signature of "Meluncthoti." I wax j luppy to learn from your correspondent that I waa laboring under a mistake ns to if '"point ef eminence." I had thought it an ex- j sited position in society: but I now suppuse it to be some rocky hill or stony precipice where Uns gentleman sits wrnppej up in conscious uiBany mating mo greai i:oimr. mai me cbarrh is entirely pure, and the ministry doing its whole duty. Your correspondent says: "he was not a little aatouished to hear ine say" that the cbarch permits its members to make, buy, elLaadnse rpiritous liquors as a beverage that a member of the church may destroy the lives of citizens, and disturb the harmony and goad order of society, (he should have added, bf tt ale,') and yet bo regarded as a faithful member, and no law could be found in any of Ilia articles of the church to punish him. I slatad these facts iu my former article, and notwith- 1 standing "Melancthon's astonishment" I slill reiterate them in the present; for astonishment does not destroy facts, nor surprise change the relation of truths. If these statements were 1 facts prior to his "astonishment," they still reinaiii and are destined to remain as such so long I a the ministry continue inactive on this subject, j Jf I am iu error in this, I ask him to cor reel me; but this can never be done by idle assertions, or personal assumptions, it must be done (if it be done at all) by the moral force nf truth, and the overpowering effect of facts. Any attempt to suppress the truth, or to misquote statements, must be regarded by all thinking minds us an evidence of the weakness of the cause in which the person is engaged. I have already shown where your correspondent neglected (110 doubt intentionally) to give my statement iu full. He will never uvince this community that he is correct by giving garbled extracts iu this manner, lie may tell your readers for years, through the columns of your paper, "that it has as binding a pledgn as the Washingfouians, but will the thinking portion of community believe if Will they credit his statements while they see members of the church owuing still-houses, manufacturing, buvinsr, selling and using thi .aoul destroying poison f Will they place any reliance on his memory when, after hearing him ay "the church has rules for prohibiting the use 01 imox.caili.g orinss, a umoing a mo as..- , . . - t 1 '.. ir ,, .1. . . . . t. . i ingionian pieuge iiseu, inev turn 10 ine ar- : ticlea of the various churches in Christendom,; and nnu not a single clause mat win pumsn a 1 member lor cither making, buying, selling, or using moderately spirituous liquors? That temperance is an integral part of Christianity as taught in the bible is perfectly plain; but that the church awayed by the popular feeling of centuriea has neglected to enforce this ia equally as obvious. If however the church possesses such a rule, I not only ask, but I defy your correspondent to bring it forward, lay it down, and let the public examine it and judge which of us is in error. If I am wrong in what I stated I wish to be convinced of it; but if I am right, I intend to adhere to it. Youre kindly, OBSERVER, r.ichmond, la., July 26th, 1849.

Forvvood's Cholera Xledicine. Such is the reputation acquired by Mr. Forwood's cholera drops, that he is now daily receiving orders for them from all parts of the country. They have unquestionably relieved very many persons in the first stages of the disease, and as they have doubtless been the means of saving many valuable lives, wo have every reasou to believe they deserve the high character they enjoy. Persons wishing to procure the very best article of the kind should call oti Mr. Forwood at his residence on Pearl, or Third st., between Green and Walnut. In its manufacture he is particular in using none but the best materials, and of course the effect it is intended to produce can be counted on with an almost absolute certainty. Since the first appearance of the cholara here, Mr. Forwood has supplied poor persons with large quantities of his medi cine without charge, and in other ways has done I much towards relieving the distressed and indigent ;and he still gives and gives freely w henever he is called on. It will he well enough to add that the article made by Mr. Forwood himself, has his own written signature (not printed) on the label of every bottle.
