familv ofthrfelittlflrhil.lrpn nnorf whr.m not a year old, was vainly trying to draw ' ' sustenance from the mother s breast. A little home-made wagon held their little all, and in this manner, penniless and friendless, the poor creature had travelled on foot all the distance from Cincinnati, Ohio, to New York, a distance of about nine hundred miles! The only lift on the way being about 30 miles, on the Antelope, a gentleman having paid their fare on the boat. She said that she had been three month on her tramp, and although uuwilling to tell her troubles, yet when in duced to do so, her narrative was heartrending. Her husband, a brush-maker, dying, had left her a penniless widow among strangers. Having a father and mother in New York, she set out on this desperate adventure to find them. Alas! when they seen her, it will not be the happy young bride who left them but four years ago. LtMENTABLR AFFAIR AT CJt'lNCV, MASS. Thj dead body of a young lady, named Harriet A. Nightengale, daughter of .Mr. Moses Nightengale, was found on Tuesday last in the canal, not far from the residence of the late John Quincy Adams. It seems that Miss Nightengale had formed an at tachment for a young man residing in Quincy; and. at first, she thought that her affection might be reciprocated. lint, attending church last Sabbath, she heard read the name of her lover declaring his intentions of marrying another young lady. This drove her to madness, and going home, she passed the nigiit in a dreadful state of mental excitement. On Monday, sho wrote a letter, directed to her tat lover, which she dropped in the post office; and it is presumed that the same night she put an end to her existence by throwing herself into the canal. Since the recovery of her body, the contents of tho letter have been made public. In it she expressed a deep afljotion for the young man stated that she had rejected many suiters on his account, and that as he was about marrying another, she could iiot bear the thought of living. Miss Nightengale was about 21 years of age, and bore a high reputation among n large circle of devoted friends.- Boston Travellert April 1 1.
