The "Prairie Potato and Pririe Pea." Ma. Bateha: I have just read Mr. Bryant's book "What I hv in California," and on page S4 Is tha following paragraph . The party icing n or near the Kansas Hirer, a ahort distance) went of Missouri.
'Several of the Kansas Indiana followed ns from Mr last encampment. One of them presented to ine a root of tuber, of an oval shape, about one and a half inch in length, and an inch in diameter. This root is called the prairie po
tato. Its composition is farnicaceous and highly u,,,.,iri0.f" 5"J flKVr moroere-"blf ' I that of the finest Irish potato. I have hut little doubt, if this plant was cultivated in your gnrden, it would bo an excellent and useful vege table for ordinary consumption; and very probably it would bo so improved aa to form a substitute for the potato." My curiosity was excited from this plowing description, to ascertain what plant this coulJ be; inasmuch as a substitute for the potato, which his become so subject to the rot, would bo a valuable acquisition. I therefore set about bunting through my books to find it. Turning to that part of Maj. Long s Expedition, where they were traversing the same region of country, j rootsof the Apios luberoso were much sought alter, and eaten uy ine soiuiers, wno accompan- ; led ns ia our ascent (of tiie .Missouri Kiver.) : Tbey are little tubers about half an inch in il iameter, and when boiled are very agreeable to the taste." Willi this clue, I turned to my botanical books, and 1 readily found the description of the plant. Anos TfsraosA Ground Nutrrairit Putttot This plant grows in thickets anil shady woods, in Canada, and throughout the greater part of the United States. It is a perrennial twining plant, with a round stem two to four feet in length. The leavea are rather numerous, each consisting of three (rarely two) pairs of leaflets with an odd leaf at the end, making seven leaflets lo ench leaf. The luallets are ovale, narrow, mora or less pointed, smooth, on fhnrt foot talks. The flowers are in solitary axillary racemes, one to three inches long, ami are crowded npon the stem. They are dark purple, rather handsome, and pleasantly fragrant. To the root are appended oval fleshy tubers, growing at intervals on the principal fibres, which urn very nutritious, and would perhaps lie cultivated , had we not the potatoe. It bears a leathery pod about two inches long, with several kidney -shaped seeds. It is in flower in July un l August, and ripens its fruit in September and Oc tober, j My object is to ask through the Cultivator, if i any person has made the attempt to cultivate this plant, and with what success. Perhaps some Horticulturist or Amateur ut St. Louis may have made the attempt? Or if not, perhaps they maybe induced to make tho trial. The discovery of an esculent root tqmil to the Polatoe, would be af more real value to the human family, than all the gold of California. On pnge il), Mr. Bryant says, "A fruit called prairie pen, has been very abundant along our route. The plant which produces it is about eight inches in length, am' has a leaf similar to the wild pea vine. The fruit, which varies from half an inch to au inch in diameter, has n tough rind, with a juicy pulp, the flavor of which resembles that of the green pen in its raw state. In the heart of the fruit there are a number of mall seeds: Mrs. Grayson, having the necesaary spices, fee, made of the prairie pea, a jar ef pickles, and they were equal if not superior to any delicacy of the kind which I have ever tasted." If our goo J housewives must have pickle to aet upon the table, and if the materials to make them of are so scarce here that it is necessary to resort to black walnuts and butter nuts, why not procure the prairie pea so as to have a greater variety T There is not sufficient description nbnre given to afford any clue to the name of this plant. W'hstisilT Can it be Phase ol us leiospermus of Torrcy Si. GreyT Respectfully, I). L. Mount Taber. Feb. 13. 1849. Delaware SI : very. Resolutions have been offered in both branches of the legislature of the State of Delaware, asserting in substance. rrt. That Congress has no constitutional right to interfere with the subject of slavery in the Statea. Second, That it would be uniuit and nnwise for Congress to attempt to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia, except 011 the application af the people thereof, and then only with the consent of the ail joining slave States, and upon prospective system which would occasion no loss lo the slave owners. That il was never intended to invest Congress with any authority to intermeddle with the existence of slavery in the District in any manner whatever. Third, That the people) of the territories of the Union, have the constitutional right lo regulate their own local institutions, and that therefore, any attempt lo apply Ihe principle of the Wilmot proviso lo Ihe organization of any territory would he extra coustitutiona', ungenerous, and in violation of all good fellowship between the States and their people. These resolutions were rejected in each branch of the Legislature, all the Locoforo members voting itt favor, and all the V hig mouthers gainst them. It is gratifying to see little Delaware firmly adhering to tree Labor npon Free Soil, and the time is fust hastening when a slaveholder will not be found within her limits. The next Congress will be more favorable to the Proviso than the Inst. The House will not only lie more strongly Whig, but a greater number of Locofocos will be pledged to vote for the pri nciple.
