Our lU Houses. .The elegant mansion of Win. R. RenMelear. in the count of Rensaelear, aoout on mile from Albany, is advertised for aale. The house is one of the most "extensive ever erected in America. It whole cost was 140,000. The walls and ceilings are painted in pieces by BragaMi. and the whole house is wannd by Perkin's hot water pipes. There ar? two miles of wrought iron pipes laid down in the house for the purpose. Attached to this house re extensive pleasure grounds, containing a variety of trees and shrubbery, and five miles of wiuding carriage road. The
whole estate contains 00 acres, 300 of which are enclosed by a substantial board fence thoroughly painted. The house Stands on the banks of the Hudson, 300 feet above the river, and commands a view of unsurpassed beauty and extent. To millionaire, who wishes for a place ready made to his hand, this house of Beverwyck presents attractions not often found in America. The grounds can be kept up for 82,500 per annum, and the whole bouse be supported in the true atylo for 40,000 per annum. It is a great pity that such a superior seat so long remained untenanted; especially when it is considered that the price asked if only $60,000. Rochester Dern. Cl. Fremont. A Va9hinct0n letter in the New York Post says: To-morrow morning Col. Benton will set out for New York, whither he goes to make some needful arrangements for the passage of the lady of Col. Fremont to California. Mrs. P. take the steamer for Chagres, on Thursday. She will be accompanied by her brother-in-law, Mr. Jacobs, of Louis villa. Ky. It is generally known that Colonel Fremont had made preparations previous to setting out upon his overland expedition last fall, for a permanent settlement in California. lie forwarded by sea a most ample supply of farming implements and other thing requisite for an extensive rural establishment. I understand that it is the intention of Mr. JaooUa, also, tq settle jn that region jVesf Application of Chloroform.- Mr. C. S. Bate, a dentist, writing in the London Lancet, recommends a new way of applying chloroform to abate the horrors of footh-pulling, which, if his account be well founded, as we suppose it must be. will suoersede the ordinary method of using it by narcotizing the patient. Instead of being inhaled, the chloroform is to be applied directly to the nerve of the tooth which the dentist renders accessible for the purpose, when necessary. It is applied on lint or cotton. It "causes the most violent pain to subside, says MrBate, soon after which tl e tooth may be removed with comparatively no pain." Here the plan is to stupify the nerve of the footh. Instead of the whole patient a great improvement certainly, which by re moving the ordinary method of Administration, may render the use of chloroform by dentists much more common than it WOW is. A Cutting Reply. An avaricious divine seeing a poor boy in a deplorable eondition, called him to the door, and giving him a mouldy piece of bread, asked him if he could read, to which he answered in the negative; to the question whether he oould say the Belief and the Lord's Prayer, the answer was the same. 'Well' said the divine, I will teach you that; Our Father, said the instructor. Our Father, repeated the boy; 'what your father as well as mine?' Yes, certainly.' Then We are brothers? To be sure we are, was the ready reply. Why then,' replied the boy, pulling the crust from behind his coat, how could you give your poof brother this mouldy piece of bread?' A Southern poet, who cannot raise funds enough to get to the gold oiggins, thus pours out his lull soul in glowing trains: If I wssaa vlepheat, I'd pack my trunk aud travel; And away ia Califoray 14 QaQ be scratching gravel! Another says: If I M wild-cat, , 'd spring from tree to tree, I'd aeon he in Californy The jailer boy to aee! Quick Trarelting. The Albany eorreapondent of the New York Courier and Enquirer good authority says that arrangements are under consideration by the several railroad companies between Albany and Buffalo, and the Michigan Central Railroad, as will put passengers through in two and a half days from New York to Chicago. Five hundred debtors are confined in the Baltimore jail for debt. We perceive no advantage to creditors in such a state of things. We pity the families who are suffering for want qf food in consequence of the confinement of those who would Plkerwue earn bread for them. Mr. W. B. Scarfe.'a respectable citizen of . Pittsburgh, while dressing a few days since, stuck the point of a common pin into one of his fingers, since which time he has been racked with excrutiating pains. The (azMte says that "faint hopes are entertained of his recovery. - Every aid that medicine can give has been resorted to, but it t'sr that seems to bid defiance to medical skill." A letter written front San Francisco, complains bitterly of the lack of black smiths in that region, lie says that almost any sort of a workman can make himself independent there in a very short time, weges rag from f 20 to 350 per deim. "w The Pecan Crop, once in three years, is a great affair in Texas. It is considerml equal to the cotton crop, for one hand $in gather from one to three bushels a day id the packing season lasts from si to eight weeks. It is estimated that this year 0,000 bushels of pecans would be exported from Gaudalupe alone, Passengers who came up on the Peyto mm- to Louisville, report the Cholera to be on &e increase iu New Orleans. The reytoaM. left ihe latter city on the 6th inst. and arrived at Louisville lost Mondav pijfPt. The value of knowledge is exemplified in the price paid for newspapers in California. They bring one dollar each, at the mint.
Singular Water Works. The JeflVr-
sonville(Va) Democrat makes mention of a novel preparation for supplying the citizens of that town with water. It says: The principle is somewhat, like the tele graph, as follows: There are posts placed at a certain distance from each other. through which posts are projecting nooks, curved so as lo hold a wire, and at such a distance from the post as to lot the bucket pass and repass without any obstruction. The bucket has roller attached, so that with a litfht impelling force it passes to the water, fills itself, and with a wherl at the extremity of the line that a child can turn with ea9e. in brought with rapidity to the required place. The price i 26for the first IOO yarJs, and 8 cents peryard for all over that distance. Gov. Cass has pressed hard, for forty years, upon the National Treasury. And in his case, 'appetite increases by what it feeds on." He resigned his seat in the Senate to run for President. Rejected by the people, be obtains, with difficulty , a re-election to the Senate from the Legislature of Michigan; reaches Washington on the last day of the session of Congress; takes his seat at 9 o'clock at night, so that for three hours service, he may draw $1,800 mileage money! We say three hours beeause after twelve o'clock he dodged a vote on the Wilrnot Proviso and California bill, affecting conscientious scruples against voting on Sunday! Starch Puiding. One who has satisfactorily illustrated the truth ot the old adage that the "proof of the pudding is in eating the string." has the following receipt for making Starch Pudding: Four table-spoons of starch, three 'eggs, one quart of milk and a little salt. Pulverize the starch beat it and the eggs together heat the milk; when near boiling add the starch and eggs, stirring it briskly till it boils; when it is done serve with creart and loaf sugar. It is said to be a most delicate dish. Important Arrest. An old offender, known as Jim Webb, against whom there are several indictments pending, and who is also suspected, with having been con cerned in stealing the government jewels, was arrested by officer Iloyer, of NewYork, on Monday. The officer found him at Jersey city, and, by deluding him with the idea that they were old cronies, and abusing the Police Gazette, got him to cross in the boat to New York with him. The (Jazette charges that the thieves. Hand and Webb are the govern ment jewel robbers, under direction of James Young, the suspended high constable of Philadelphia. Gold Mines in Michigan. Tho Minesota Mining Company have found, at a distance of 30 feet below the surface of the ground, a rich lode of Copper Ore. 7 feet wide, with a vein four inches thick containing considerable Silver, and on one side of this, a vein of puie Copper, nine inches thick. They have followed this 12 feet in depth, and ten feet in length and find neither end or bottom. Another Nltaft sunk at a distance of 100 feet, strikes the same vein of pure copper. The Stock of this Company is now considered worth 3UO per cent premium. Mr. Horace Vanjjhn, of Fast Greenwich. Jihode Island, has made, tho past season, one hundred barrels of wine from the vines growing wild within a few miles of that place, and shows the productiveness of the vine in that state. 1 Boston Trav. The bachelor editor of the Boston I'ee, in speaking of tho domestic duties of fb males, savs there are hundreds of ladies in that city who know not how the apple gets into the heart of a dumpling. The Ohio Statesman has a telegraphic report that "Fit Henry Warren of Iowa. has been appointed Second Assistant Postmaster General." This is the place recently held by W. J. Brown of Indiana. A Powerful Lens. By the use of a powerful lens, the sun's rays may be concentrated into a heat far exceeding that produced by other usual means. Dr. Draper of New York has one which will melt pebble stones, or cast iron, as easily as sealing wax is melted in a candle. Historical Notes of Virginia, bv Thomas Jefferson. We are happy to learn that the original MS. copy of this work.which disappeared someyears since, has at lencth been found. It was presen ted by Doctor J. T. Barclay to Dr. II., who has generously presented it to the Library of Congress, where it may be seen by those who are interested in such mementoes of the past. Thomas Morris. Esq., formerly United States Marshal of New York, and son of the celebrated Robert Morris, of Philadelphia, died in N. York on Monday last. (rVe regret to see the announcement of the death of Philander Hamilton, Esq., several times a Representative in the General Assembly from Decatur countv. He died at t-reensuurgh 00 the 5th inst.-.JttJ. Slate Sentinel. r-The Free Negro Bill the Legislature of Delaware. has passed It empow crs the magistrate of the State to arrest all free negroes who have no apparent oc cupation or means ot living, and hire them out for a term of service not exceeding a year. Too Much of a Htrry. A lady leaving New York a day or two ago, just as they were raising the plank of the steamboat, cried out to her husband, "Goodness, George, 1 must go back to the Astor House I've left my teeth in the washbowl." Hon. John D.tvis. of Mass., The National Intelligencer says that this gentleman, besides being constitutionally ineligible, has constantly declared that he would not accept a cabinet office, on any conditions. Magnetic Wires under the Sea An experiment haa recently been made in the English Channel, by which the magnetic wires covered in Gutta Perch a, have been carried three miles into the Channel, with perfect success. It is believed that the wires connecting London and Paris can be carried across the Channel, and thus perfect that implant oommunipatioTJ,
The Mormonites. These remarkable
people are increasing in numbers both in this country and in England. The London Globe says that there is a large body of them in the neishboring districts who are preparing to emigrate and to colonize in California. They have chartered four or five vessels for their accomodation and intend to leave in the Spring. The Mormons, it is known, have already a settlement in California, where they are sucoesfully engaged in agriculture. Considerable numbers of them are on their way to the same region.. The first emigrating colony was o large that a battalion five hundred strong was formed fro.ii it. The religious views of thess people are peculiar, but we have no accurate knowledge of them. Their domestic polity is that of communism in some of its forms. Persecution has had its usual effect in multiplying the votaries of this strange faith. They appear to be industrious, and it is very certain that they exhibit an unusual degree of perseverance and fortitude In the prosecution of their purposes. Halt. American, 10 h. An Interchange of Opinions On Friday last Gov. Dewey transmitted to the Assembly a copy of the resolutions passed by the Virginia Legislature, adverse to the Wilrnot Proviso, in favor of Slavery. Ate. Whereupon, on motion of Air. Strong, the Assembly voted that the Governor be requested to send to Virginia the resolutions on these same subjects which have been passed by our Legislature. Milwaukie Sentinel, 22J. During the past week the presentation of sword took place at asbiiigton, which had been voted by Congress to Major Generals Butler of Kentucky, Twigs. Worth. Quitman, and the heirs of the late General Ifamor. They bad recently been finished ut the celebrated manufactory of Ames, of Springfield. They are of superb manufacture, costing. 1 9.000. The swords were delivered by the President to the respective friends of the gallant men to whom they had been voted. High Pkice fou Cokn The New York Express states that eighty dollars were paid for four barrels of green corn and peas, received by steamer Crescent City, from Chagres, and sent direct to Washington. Quite a tall price for vegetables. Short, Shorter. Shortest. Ths dispatches of General Taylor were short his speeches shorter and the following letter shortest. During the Mexican War, one of the minor officers who had charge of forage addressed to Gen. Taylor a note in these words : Sir In oqedience to my instructions from the Quartermaster at Tampa. I have put all the horses and mules upon half allowance; must the stall" horses form an exception to this rule?" To which the following letter was re sponsive : "NO. Z. TAYI.OK.' Yankee Enterprise. A correspond ent of the Providence Journal relates the following incident: A gentleman long identified with the ice trade, having enter ed into it as early as lCO.r, after some twenty-five years of successful enterprise. thought to enlarge his sphere of kuowl: edge and action by entering into other mercantile business He soon became entangled by his relation to some unfortutunate mercantile houses, and found him self a debtor to tne amount 01 ziu.mru. This must have given him more of a chill than his ice-houses ever did. But he knew that ,1 faint heart never won a fair lady or noble prize. He told his creditors that if thev would give him time and not hamper him at all, he would pay the whole, principal ami interest. For thirteen years iie labored for it, and last year made the closing payment on $210,000 principal, and about 70,t00 interest.. He did it in his old business, as the ice king of the globe. He sold his cargoes in Ihe great southern ports of the two hemispheres at low prices, kept rigid faith, bought largely the needed storehouses in various centers of the trade, secured the lands around his ponds, made friends every where, and now comes out with an independent fortune and free of debt. Such was his generous policy that the English residents of Calcutta presented him with a fire-proof stone storehouse, as a token of respect and to retain him in that market. Marriage of an American in Chili. Mr. Barton. United States Charge des Af fairs to Chili, recently was married to a j wealthy lady in that country, the Signorita Donna something or other. The ceremony was performed by the chaplain of the United States ship. Independence. The Catholic Bishop refused his sanction to the nuptials, on account of the Charge being a Protestant and the lady a Catholic. After the marriage was performed by the Chaplain, the Bishop asserted that the minister had a wife then living in the the United States, whereupon the minister addressed a note to the Bishop, demanding an anoloirv. with the threat that - 1 unless one was jitrii wiiiiiu iwriiu-mur hours, it would become a national affair. From Yucatan. Bv the arrival of Capt. Smith, of brig Potomac, from Sisal, we have information up to lGth February, lie states that "the affairs of the Government are still in a very unsettled state. ! The American troops have been in sever- j al engagements, and suffered considerably. There was much dissatisfaction existing among the officers and men of this regiment, caused by the false representa-i tions made to them before starting from New Orleans; in consequence of which, one major, five captains, and some eight or ten lieutenants had resigned. It was reported at Sisal that Pihesuca, (the headquarters of that division) was again surrounded by the Indians; that the whites had no provisions, and would be compelled to retreat, if they had not already done so. The Indians had latterly exhibited mqch bravery, fighting in the open field and hand to hand, a method which they have hitherto avoided. The markets were well supplied with American goods Produce of the country scarce and highJournal of Commerce.
