AGRICULTURAL. Agriculture is the most healthful, the most useful, and the most nolle employment of man. Washi.ngtox. Weight of Green Corn on an Acre. Groat stories have been told of tho amount of rooU that havo ben grown on a singlo aero of ground; and soma havo supposed it incmitblo that forty tons of tho yollow turnip, or mangol wurtzle, could b grown on an aero. IJut a little calculation will show that forty tons of groon corn may bo produced in tho s-uno spaco and wo havo no doubt it has boon done. Last weok wc had tho curiosity to wcih ton hills, in our own fluid, that stood sido by s'ulo near tho contro of tho aero. The30 weighed over one hundred pounds though tho corn was of our common kind, raised for grain. Tho hills grow at tho usual distance from each other, ono pace; this gavo us four thousand hills, four thousand hills multiplied by ten gives forty thousand pounds or twenty tons. IJut for cutting up green wo plant tho hoMe tooth, or Virginia corn, and this moro than twico as thick as wo do whon wo plant to raiso inatura oars of corn; so that any ono may seo it is possible and oven easy, to grow forty tons of greon corn on an acre. IIo need only to weigh a singlo hill to form a tolerably corroct judgmentSix hundred bushels of jotatoes havo boon grown on an aero of ground. At scvonty pounds por bfshel wo havo twenty ono tons. Four tons of hay, dry, havo boon mado from ono ncrc; but dry hay will not weigh moro than ono fourth as much as tho grass will at tho timo of cutting. Sixteen tons of greon fodder, in tho form of grass, may therefore he grown on an aero of land. Wo mnko these calculations that fanners may not deceivo tln-i.jsc U r s on U ing assurod of wi.it Jargo quantities nrny bo gruw on ono aero for fodder for cnltlo. It mny he that corn will give moro in weight than nny other vrgetahlo, yet it will not follow that corn cin profitably ho grown for tho solo purpose of using thy stalks as winter fodder. Mass. 1 'lough man. From tin' Indiana Farmer Gji.Ii in r. Cttin;r Kc.tdy for Winter. Haul tnnbnrk and bank up around tho houso to unsure a warm cellar. Cellar windows should bo kept ojtn through the da', and closed after the nights begin to freeze, as lato in tho season as possible. Seo that dry walks aro prepared from tho Jictno to all tho out-houses. Do not bo stingy of your materials; make the paths high and rounding, so us to ensuro dryness, especially about tho barn. Soo that (-tones, gravol, or timber aro laid so ns to bo out of tho way of cnttlc's feet, and just in tho way of your own. Wo havo seen swamp-harn-yards, lx lore- going into which a prudent man would chooso to mako his will. Mud on tho shoes from road and Holds is all well enough, but mud from one's own yards, shows that tho owner has not fixed up as ho ought to havo dono. If your stables nro old, examine tho floor; or some night may lot a horse through, to conio out lame for lifo. If you havo a dirt floor, sro that it is carefully laiJ, and remember that if it bo inclinod cither way, it should bo from ths rack and not toward it. Let your wagons, carts, plows, &c, bo repaired during tho fall and winter, and not bo left till spring. Sco that your shingles aro all sound on tho houso, barn, and shod. That loak which you havo allowed to drop, drop, drop all summer has at last tako ofl" a yard or two of plaster, and it is timo now to j uton a shii glo ortwo. Thcro is another loak or two that must bo stoppod. That pocket of yours which has let out dimo aftor dimo for liquor, tho ho!o getting bigger and bigger cvory yoar, now is tho timo to sow it up, or it will rip you up. A pocket is a small place, to be suro, but wo havo seen barns, cattle, and aero

slip thro a holo in it which, at first, was only largo ;

enough to let si.xpenco through. Sco that all your tools havo a safe and dry standing place; hoes, raks, scythes, sickles, yokes, spades, shoves, chains, pins, harrows, plows, carts, and slods, axes, mattox, hammers, and everything, but your gecso and ducks, should bo kept from wet and snow. If you have no stables for your cattlo you should

have good sheds provided, opening to the south. Ivon whon cattle aro allowed to run through the stock-fields, thorc ought to ho in somo warm placo j an amplo shod to which they can resort during wot and cold wcathor; and ono sufficiently snug can bo mado without calling in tho carpenter or buying lumber. . j

Keeping Voting Pigs in Winter. j Thoro is both negligence, and mistako, in tho way of wintering pigs. I am not talking to thoso whoso manner of keeping stock is, to let stock j tako caro of themselves; but to farmers who mean to bo careful. Hogs should bo sorted. Tho littlo ones will, otherwise, bo cheated at tho trough, j and overlaid and smothered in tho sleeping-heap. ' Thoro should not bo too many in ono enclosure; especially young pigs should not sloop in crowds; : for, although thoy sleep warmer, they will suffer on that very account Lying in piles, thoy get sweaty; tho 3kin is much moro sensitive to tho cold, and coming out in tho morning roaking and j smoaking tho kcon air piorcos them. In this way, young pigs dio ofT through tho winter by being too warm at night. If you havo tho Iandeliark and aligator breed, however, you should
