To those engaged in the important, but ardueus taiik of instructing youth, McGcffey's Eclectic Readers, Nos. One, Two, Three akd Focr, are now presented, thoroughly revised, and greatly enlarged, with many important improvements. They are now in a permanent stereotype form, NO FURTHER ALTERATIONS being intended. Prof. McGuffey's enthusiastic devotion to the cause of Education, his fine taste and discriminating mind, and his practical experience as an instructor, render hint peculiarly fitted for the department of authorship, to which he has given his attention. The suggestions of intelligent teachers who had used the former edition of the series, and the valuable aid afforded him in the revision by an experienced educator, hav aUo furnished him with unusual facilities for advantageously revising and enlarging these works. In this series, comprising as it does, a careful selection of instructive, entertaining and moral matter, progressively arranged, and graduated with reference to the capacity of thm pupil, Prof. MeGufley has afforded to parent! and teachers, a most thorough, complete, and efficient auxiliary In the education of youth. Its extensive use has been sufficient for the development and just appreciation of its many excellencies. The result is, that intelligent teachers pronounce it the most complete iscries now before the public. The intrinsic merit of Prof. McGuffey's Eclectic Readers, having gained for them an unparalleled and rapidly increasing circulation, the publisher is enabled, notwithstanding the heavy expenditure in their revision and enlargement, to manufacture them in the neatest and most durable manner, while they are now furnished at such low prices, that they are the CHEAPEST, as well as the best school reading books extant. JUST PUBLISHED, 'McGcrrEy'a Rhetorical Gcide; or Fifth Reader, of the Eclectic Series 180 pages, 12mo.; containing copious and minute rules, example and exercises in articulation, inflection, emphasis, accent, quantity, rhetorical pause, modulation, expression, reading of poetry, rhetorical dialogue, gesture, and their collateral subjects, to which are added a great variety of elegant reading lessons, (about ono half prose and half poetry,) selected from the most classic writers ; furnishing cntestaining and instructive specimens of various style of composition. This work has been pieparod with very great care, and with reference to making it a useful, practical, and standard book ; and the publisher confidently hopes, that the Rhetorical Guide of Mr. McGuffey is well adapted to aupply the wants of classes in rhetorical reading in our Academies, High School and Colleges. Must do tho healing and curative business, after all. Why is it that so many persons are in the habit of grasping after the many deleterious nostrums published in the papers, put up by wrsons who have no knowledge either of the theory or science of medicine; neither could they be forced to swallow their own mixing, which they intend for others. Almost daily are these persons calling at the office, whoso countenances and debilitated structure denotes the evils of the poisonous physic palmed upon them in their atlliction. If onr grave-yards could speak they would astonish tho world, of the vast amount carried there from the etiects of poisonous medicine administered to them by persons who have grown wealthy upou the credulity of those whom they have duped. Let it lie remembered that!). Duncan' Expectorant Remedy is tho only medicine that perfect confidence can be placed in for the certain removal of the first cause of Consumption. Serious Facts To those rrcdi-pocd to CONSUMPTION!! HAPPY would it be for thousands of the human family, if they would only see the terrors of Consumption, when it first appears in the distant horizon of their vision, as distinctly as when it has prostrated them on a bed of death, with the emaciated form and sepulchral voice of a dwelling in the shades of another world. 1 hey then could not only have time time to prepare their immortal souls for a habitation in that "house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens," that they might adopt some means to divert the stern and impartial destroyer from his purpose before he has tasted of the precious blood of their existence, or began to revel m their

June 11, 1845. 84tf DR. M LANE'S CELEBRATED For the Cure of Hepatite or Liter Complaint, Dyspepsia, and Sick Head-Ache. Symptoms of a Disease.! Liver. Pain in the right side, under the right side, under tho edge of the ribs, increased on pressure; sometimes tho pain is in the left side; tho patient is rarely able folic on the left side; sometimes the pain is felt uuder the shoulder blade, it frequently extends to the top of the shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for a rheumatism in the right arm. The stomach is uffected with loss of appetite and sickness; the bowels, in general, are costive, sometimes alternating with lax; the head is troubled with pain accompanied with a dull, heavy sensation in the back part. There is generally a considerable loss of memory, accompanied with a painful sensation of having left undone something which ought to have been done. A slight dry cough is sometimes an attendant. The patient complains of weariness and debility; he is easily startled, his feet are cold or burning, and he complains of a prickly sensation of the skin; his spirits arc low; and although he is satisfied that exercise would bo beneficial to him, yet he cm scarcely summon up fortitude enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts every remedy. Several of the above symptoms attend the disease, but cases have occurred where few of them existed, yet examination of the body after death has shown tho liver to have been extensively deranged. CERTIFICATES -This is to certify, that having been associated with Dr. M'Lane in the practice of niediciner for nearly two and a half years, I have had many opportunities of witnessing the good effects of his- Liver Pills, and 1 lielieve they have cured and relieved a much larger proportion of the diseases of the liver, than I have known cured and relieved by any other course of treatment. She obtained ono box of M'Lane's IJver Pills, which sho took and received much benefit from the same. To substantiate the above fact many hundreds of testimonials could lc adduced, out of which the following ars selected, from individuals of standing and veracity. Indeed, it is confidently affirmed that each new trial of tlis powers of this remedy will have an additional tendency to widen and confirm its fame, and that if it were universally known and diffused over the United States, it would not save less than many hundreds, if not thousands of lives annually. Certificates. I do certify that a vial of Dr. M'Lane's American Worm Specific expelled five hundred and two whole worms, &- pieces that would have made sixty more, from a boy of John Lewelling, which, if laid in a straight line, would have most probably measured the enormous length of one hundred yards.
