The first Duilding in this city, ia the imperial palace 1000 yards long, nnd "0O wide; an J Cust .1,050,000 sterling. It has stabling sufficient to accommodate 10,000 horses. CSodaia Kotelar, ia another palace of the Pea
cock Throne. In the rear of ihe throne is a gold palm tree, and on one of its leaves a golden peacock is perched, immediately over the seat, with expanded wings, which form it glittering canopy. There is an observatory here. Panipurt, NVV. of Delhi, is celebrated for two great battle; the first, fought by Sultan Bauber and Ibrahim Lodi, the Afghan Emperor; the second, between Ahmed Shah Abdalla, King of Afghans' and Bhou Sedasira. Io the province of Ojde, the lapis laxuli, is found, from which is extracted tho ultra marine blue, so highly prized by painters. Il is said to cost about $50 per ounce. Lucknow is the capital. Allahabad, capital of Allahabad, of which men
tion has been made. Benares, another city of
this province, is the focus of Ijrahrninical learning. It contains many opulent inhabitants, and is the groat mart for diamonds on J gems. The land is belJ sacred for two mils around. Within the city are 1,000,000 of images of the lingam, which is said to bo a petrifaction of Siva. They believo the city was originally built fit gold, and in consequence of the sins of the people was converted into stone and afterwards, for greater sins, into clay. The Brahmins say the physical foundation of this city differs from Ihe mass of the earth; that it rests on the point of Siva's trident ; whereas the ennh rests upon the thousand headed serpent Ananta, the emblem cf eternity. Hence they contend, there can be no earthquakes there It is said thai one visit to Benares secures an
entrance into the heaven of Siva. The popular
tion is about 500,000. There are several schools of learning, and also an observatory. Province of Bahar; tho country is flat and produces quantities of opium, which is the staple commodity. Patnia, its capital, ranks higher than D.lhi or Agra. It contains a pooulation of 312,000. v Bengal is ibe most important province in India. Rice grows very luxuriantly in the South, and Wheal and Barley in the North. Its most abundant productions are, tobacco, indigo, cotton, mul
berry, and poppy. Calcutta is the metropolis of
the British power io India, and is situated on the Iloogly river, 100 miles from the sea. This is the site of Fort William, which is the strongest fort in India. In the esplanade, between the city and fort, is the Government house of the Marquis of Wellesloy; near which, is a place called Ihe "Black Hole;1' the prison in which Soobah Sarnjeh ud Dowla.on taking the fort in 1757, shut up the garrison, consisting of 110 persons, of whom 123 perished before morning, suffocated by the confined air. A monument, near the gate, now commemorates those unfortunate persons The fort was commenced by Lord Clive, after the battle of Plassey, and has cost the E. Ind. Compaoy 2,000,000 steilmg. The population of this city, is computed at 500,000, and the number of houses 7S.7G0. It was here that Sir Wm. Jones established the Asiatic society, which has proved very useful in obtaining and collecting know ledge of this coun'ry. Edmonstone's inland, near the mouth of the Iloogly, has emerged since 1S13. It was at ihe town of Iloogly, that tho English, in 1GSS fought their first battle in Bengal, against the Nabob's troops, and were successful. Moorshedabad, is the chief seat for the manufacture of silk. And so mild is tho climate in this district, that the silk worms spin the whole year round, on the mulberry trees, with which an island, near this city, is covered. There are many other divisions, in the province of Bengal which are not noticed. Among others, is that of Dacca Jelalpoor, distinguished as the granary cf rice for Bengal. Dacca, its chief town, is the third city in the province, and contained, towards the cloao of tho seventeenth century, a large gun of hammered iron, weighing G1.S14 pounds, which carried a ahot of 400 pounds. There is a tribe of people called Gsrrows, liviog on the NE. border of Bengal, who cat al! kinds of animal food, sueh as dogs, cats, makes.
Stc. They are very partial to puppies, (no doubt they'd like John Tyler,) which they cook in a cruel manner. They first rompel it to eat as much rice as its stomach will contain, then tie its four legs together and throw it on the fire, and after the animal is sufficiently cooked, it is ripped
open, and the rtce divided and greedily eaten. If
a quarrel occurs between two Uarrows, the weaker party fides to a hill, after which, each one plants a tree, bearing an acid fruit catted chata-
kor, swearing to embrace the first opportunity of eating their adversary bead with the juice of
this fruit. If no opportunity occurs, ibe virulent feeling is handed down to posterity; and the party which succeeds, boils tbe bead of bis antagonist, eats part of the soup, and distributes the

victuals, eatanoat of and then hong up as a trophy. Skolts of this kind are highly valued, and form part of the circulating medium. In the district of Cutlack. ir.fthe province of

within its cumpass. This image had its origin from Krishna, a divine incarnation, who was accidentally shot by the arrow of Aogada a hunter; after which his bones were placed in the belly of an image, made by Viswacarroi, the architect of the gods. A succession of different images has been made ; and the Brahmins, in removing and transplactng the bones, wear a bandage over their eyes, fearing, as they believe, that the effulgence of the relics, will strike them dead. Tho present im ago, is a carved block cf wood, with hideous visage painted buck ; mouth wide and red ; head and eyes very large ; without arms or legs. At
ceremonies he is supplied itti gnu or stiver arms. There aro two other idols, representing his bro ther and sister. They are placed on cars, eighty feet high, which rtsernb'o Hindoo pagodas, and are supported on strong frames, containing four or five rows of wheels. Tho upper parts of the cars, aro covered with striped broad cloth. During tho festival cf Ruth Jattra, Ihe images are brought forth with immense noise and ceremony, and tha cars are moved along towards the house of the idol, in a garden, about a mile and a half distant, which, however requires three, or four Jay?, as the heavy machines roll very slowly along. Much emulation is excited to participate in dragging the cars, end horrible scenes frequently occur en those occasions. Many superstitious, fanatical and deluded creatures, cast themselves under the wheels of the ponderous vehicle, and are crushed to death. The bodies of such are never buried, but are left for vu'tures and dogs to prey upon. A great road, raised, to an average, six feel above the level of the country, leads from Calcutta to Juggernaut. At Cala Bhairava, in the province of Berar, n shocKing ceremony takes place in the beginning of epring. It is the practice of some of tho lowest tribes, to make vows of suicide, in return to the answers which their prayers are believed to receive. Accordingly, eight or ten victims annually precipitate themselves from a rock in this place, and are dashed to places. In the province of Arungatad, is tho island of Bombay ; the seat of the princip.il British set tlement on the west coast of India. It is a barren rock unfit for agriculture, but possesses superior advantages for trade and for ship build. n?. In 181G, its population was 101,000. It is much inferior to the presidencies of Bengal or Madras, but its inhabitants arjitmorg the most intelligent people cf Ilindoslan. Near Bombay, la ihe celebrated island of Elephant, composed of two long hills with a valley between. It took its name (by the Portuguese) from a colossal statue cf an elephant, cut out of solid rock near the landing. This island contains an artificial cavern hose entrance is fifty-five feet wide and e;r n high and long. The temple itself, is 13u ieet in length, 123 in width nnd
from 17 to 15 in height. It is supported by 2G ;
