Hi hi i- ? f. 1 I 3

To the Patron of the 'Richmond Palladium. Kind Patboks: A happy Xe-Yir to you ail Patrons great and patrons small.' With much good will I meet you hear. As "Carrier" for the current year, And while we talk of other times In stanzas rude, anrl uncouth rhymee, I'll pledge myself, (tho' somewhat lesser) To follow up ray predecessor. And give you weekly at your door The choicest news this wide world o'er; Besides abundant other matter (And tho I have no wish to flatter The "chaps" who jet my papet out,) I still must ay about the latter, That whatso'er they set about They'I do with wondrous skill and power, And meet your wishes to the hour. This much premised, we now begin To see what topics we'll take ia To scan the year that just gone by And note events of strange complexion, That in promiscuous jumble lie And ominiou in their connection. When it came in our hopes were high. And joy beamed forth from every eye, With heart elate and bosoms warm, We dreamed not of the coming storm. Long had we fought for freemen's rights, Wiested away by tyrant hands Through many dark afflictive nigrits Withstood oppressions serried bunds And now and now the llattle won Basked once again in freedoms sun. But hark that sound ! 'lis wildly aid Which from the east breaks loud and clear B dml I a train in mourning clad ! The muffled drum the pall the bier! And all the o jtward signs of grief Invest the sons of freedom now Their day of jubilee how brief ! Beneath affliction's rod they bow Their Chief has fallen in the hour, Oppression lost its ill got power. Rest Chieftain rest thy work is done Warrior rest for thy race is run Sleep Statesman sleep on thy lowly bier Where the sod is wet with the patriots tear. For thee, the wail of sorrow rose For thee, the band of mourners came And all the signs of deepest woes Shrouded in g'001" P' freedom's flame. Itest Chieftain, rest thy fame shall be A light above this stormy world ; And freedom's banner long for thee With glorious strength shall be unfurled, Kent Warrior, rest tho battle's strife With carnage dread and horrors rife Hath passed away and we are free Uncathed our Eagle soars on high Our canvass whitens every sea" Our Banners proudly float the sky ; Within their folds in letters bright Bursts on the patriots raptured sight Two names, commingling into one Great Washington and Harbison. Tims had rolled on a little space Another filled the Chieftains place To him the pecple's eyes were turned lie said his patriot bosom burned With gratitude to those whose will Gave him this mighty trust to fill And would so far as in him lafi Their uubouglit confidence repay The people tossed their hats on high And with loud huzzas rend the sky. But there soon rame an extra session Of Congress, to relieve our woes When members labor (strange confession) More for themselves than good of those Who sent them there to mend the laws And do away ths "specie clmri" So long the curse of this poor nation, Vnd stumbling-block to its salvation To make a currency whose use Would not ad mi, of such abuse, That poor and rich. ai..l all.rnight feel Its aim to be tho general weal : Alas! how many a luckless slip Between the upturned cup and lip. Another little space has passed Contusion stalks throughout the land And at the trumpets martial blast A band of patriots' firmly stand "A Traitor bats" they loudly cry " If ill head lim e her tor else ire' It die". The people hear the mad uproar Where clashing tongues are rolling o'er, Where grinding teetn in firmness set Proclaim the force of anger yet Where firery orbs, and knitting frown. Would look a very tyrant down When manifest long and load. Burst from them like a fiery cloud On lightning's wings il swiftly flew And spread a flame the country through. The " Traitor" trembles pale's his browHe sees the fire that's lignted up, A f'elo cannot sav him now, He must drink down the bitter cup. The people meantime see the tarce. Begin their luckless stars to curse For -specWs" getting still more scarce. And "currency grows worse and worse; The sertanls live in hi-h estate The m-islert mourn fitir hapless late. The year is drawing to a close Once more the "Traitor' meets his foes Their fiery zeal scarce yet cooled down. They meet again with mutual frown ; Distrust pervades that spartan band. Who for their proclamation stand Each man, lika stern Leonids.', At Thermopylae's dreadful r,? Contending to life's latest hour. Against that Hut, the f'elo power. Long may you stand ye noble few, A bulwark round your native lan.1; And may your manifesto's too Our admiration still command. On h:gh vaur banner! proudly wave Above trie "traitors" lowly grave Fearing your motto t the sky. In burning light "'Head him or die" ' . Kind patrons! I muti end my lay The year we sing, has passed away And lime on his untiring wings. True to his trust, another brings May you be free before if close From all pecuniary woes And that I may feel with vou The fullness of the general joy. Take from your purse a "Bit" or two And hand them to the printer boy. January 1st, IS42.
