From the EvaasviU Journal. ToXATors. If th facts set forth in tha subjoined article, which we copy from the Western Luminary-, be correct, in relation to Miles medicinal prepe ration from the tomato, it will form a no w era in the practice of medicine, and ultimately supercede the use entirely of that most subtle and we believe dangerous of ail mineral preparations, calemel. Hius'Toxato Mkdictxk. The virtues of the Tesnato not only as a delicious vegetable for the table, but also, as a medicine, have been for a considerable time past, attracting no little attsatioa. It has been believed to posses anti-bilious qualities, which if they could be effectually extracted, or separated from the superfluous matter would be invaluable. This has been character-: tied as a bilious country. A large portion of the diseases arize from disordered livers or from de-1 ranweroents in the glandular system. Tnis is specially the case in the west and still more so at the south. If a remedy easy, safe, effect uaj in its opparatioo, and leaving the constitution unimpaired, could be diecovorej for Bilious complaints, this would unquestionably be among the most healthy climates in the world. Calomel has been the almost universal remedy for diseases of this characte r. But it is a remedy which nothing but necessity should induce the nee of. I t may be considered as trespassing in the province of another prufrssioo to speak of this, yet we my be p remitted to express our strong conviction, that Calomel cannot be used without inj jriMi and lasting c Sects upon the eve tern, greater or less according to the Quantities

So far as we have been able to learn, it has praduced the desired eCect, operating to produce a healthy action of the liver, procuring biltoos discharges when needed, and in some instance, breaking upevers, with even more certainty and in a shorter time than calomel. For icir-er bilious head aches, it has been found a good remedy. Those who have used it, say that
it does not produce the debilitating effects of
most other kinds of purgative medicines, that there is no increased danger from colds after its use, and where large doses of calomel would be needed, this operates without any danger of the distressing and injurious effects of calomel when producing salivation. As we have reason to hope from our investigation this extract of the Tomato, will prove a substitute for calomel in a great variety of cases, we cannot but regard it as a great blessing to the human family. It is therefore that we speak of it and we trust that it will be fully tested by families. Wo have every assurance that it is perfectly safe, and free from all mineral substance.

The proprietor, before offering it at the public, has taken occasion to converse with some distinguished physicians of Virginia, aad with special psine so speak of all the various parts and proportions of this medicine; and those that know its component parts have pronounced it one of the very best compounds for the following diseasee that can be prepared, and may be used with perfect safety, as well with the new born babe, as the man of three score and ten. If those that use it are not satisfied that it is the very best remedy for the diseases here enumerated, they car. return the bottle and receive back their money. It ie boldly asserted that it is almost (if not quite) infallible in Diarrbss in all it various forms Dysentery, Cramp-colic, Cholera Morbus and Asiatic Cholera : Also. After Pains

has been subjected to the most rigid and scientific examination by some of the most extensive (physicians) practitioners in Virginia, who now recommend it in their practice. They recommend the dose to be from one to two table spoonfuls every half hour for a grown person, while the pain. loosenese of the bowe's or vomiting continuss; for a child from six months to two or three years old, trom half to a tea spoonful. It may be given to the youngest infants for colic, in the same proportions that paregoric is given.

It is beu for families to keep it by them, and give it as soon as any of the above diseases maks their appearance. How many babss may kept plump during the summer by giving a little in time, that otherwise will waste away and die under the agonizing care of the dotiig and watchful mother! To the President of the United States together with the People at large, and to Mothers particularly. Your attention is invited to one of the most valuable Medical Discoveries that ha ever been made in this or perhaps any other country. To save the necessity of coming before you with a list of certificates to prove the value of this medicine, so fortunately disc-wrered, the single names of Dr. F.J. Mettauer of "Petsrsburg, Ya., and bis letter, together with Thomas Shore's, P. M. of the same place, (10 Alfred Huger Esq. P. M. Charleston, S. C.) are presented. The high standing of the Doctor in Virginia, as a medical man, and a gentleman and the notoriety of Mr. Shore, as being one among, if not the best public officers in the United States than whom no one as a gentleman can stand higher, will be sufficient to induce any, and all, to em
brace the first opportunity to secure a portion of the Anti-
Spasmodic Tincture, or Mother's Comfort. No name that
the proprietor could offer to the public would give more confidence than the above. The proprietor regards himself as having don: all that duty to his fellow men, and a strong desire (that should be in the breast of all) t- relieve the sufferings in the land, that ought to be expected of hi in, except to proceed, as fast as he can, to supply the many large orders that are already before him, and to be ready for sill that may come. All such directed to the American Laboratory, Petersburg, Virginia, post paid, will be attended to in due time. If Congress shall buy the right, with a view of making it public to the people of the United States and the world, the
proprietor will be dim happy in knowing that the people ne
ver received a greater benefit at the hands of their representatives. Respectfully submitted by the proprietor of the American Labratory Petersburg, Dec. 1st, 163G. Petersburg, Sept. 23A, 1339. Dr. F. J. Mattave, Dear Sir I sand you a letter from Charleston, from a highl v respectable nouse, in which you
will see they make a special and anxious inquiry about the Anti-Spasmodic Tincture, or Mother's Comfort. As an act of humanity to the inhabitants of Charleston, as well as others in the State of South Carolina that are likely to suffer with Cholera, I ask you to give your opinion, concerning the efficacy of this medicine. In this and otner cemm jnilies, there would be no need of doing more then simply offering it for sale. I am apprised that physicians generally are opposed to the recommending of medicines not prepared by themselves. Hut as you have besn made acquainted with all the parts, and proportions of which the Tincture is co.upoaed, and as you have used it with such delightful success, and as you know other physicians that have done the same, and that speak of it in the very highest terms I ask you in the name of onr fellow sufferers of South Carolina, and particularly of Charleston, to state bow, and for what diseases this medicine should be taken. Should you not feel disposed to comply with this request, let my feeling for the sufferings of my fellow citizens, plead my excuse for this application. I am anxious to send them a large box, by the mornings boat. With great regard, I am vourobedient servant, II. B. MONTAGUE. PcTERssi acH, Scr t 2ifth, 1836 Mr. II. B. Montague, Sir: I received your favor of this morning, and have to say that the situation in which our southern fellow citizens are plunged by the fatal prevalence of Asiatic Cholera in their midst, and m sincere sympathy with them leaves me no hesitation in doing all my humble exertions can accomplish in lessening the fatality of that terrible disease. Therefore, I do most willingly comply with your request, to add my testimony to the many others that might be procured, were it deemed necessary, as to the decidedly beneficial effects of your Anti-Spasmodic Tincture, or Mother's Comfort. This medicine was used in Virginia during the prevalence of the cholera, and in every case that came under my observation, with the most entirely successful result, w-hi restored to and used perseveringly, before the state of collapse had ensued. A fair TciALof the medicine, will, I iiaut eeUEvr, be its B-st recommendation. It has HtsETovoee, and will, I think, accomplish all it raomsts 1.1 the kjseasks roa WHICH TOU ADVEXTISE ITS USE. The dose, half an ounce, or a large table spoonful, to be repeated every fifteen minutss, or half an hour, till vomiting or looseness have been subdued. And if the dose given should be rejected by the stomach, which is sometimes though rarely the case, it should instantly, and in every ease be repeated, till it is retained. Many cases will require the use of pretty full doses of calomel, opium, and camphor, as auxiliaries and cannot be dispensed with. 1 have generally found friction, and the usual hot applications disadvantageous and have been in the habit of keeping the patient moderately covered, and the room ventilated. These remarks are the sasult of personal observation, during the prevalence of cholera here, and if they have the effect to encourage the use of your medicine, I feel sure the result will prove that it has no ordinary claim on the public attention. Very respectfully, your frieiul, FRANCIS J. METTAUER, M. D. Post Office, Petessslso, Oct, 1st, 1836. Mr. AaraEsHcoEa, P. M. Charleston, 8. C. Dear Sir : Doctor F. J. Mettauer, of this place, has been Mlled uoon bv Mr. Montague for a letter, in which he recom-
1 mends the Mother's Comfort, in all casee of Cholera. Entire
confidence may be placed in any statement tne aocior may give on any subject. He is a physician of much skill and experience, and has practised in this town with great success. My belief is that the medicine will recommend itself. I consider it a valuable medicine, and have no doubt of its being a certain remedy in affections of the bowels. Very reeoectfully, your obedient servant, THOMAS SHORE, P.M.
