AH ABANDONED VIIAIAN. Fossa too Crroopoada-co ef i a Ky. Ci nswialta. , XesriMSrSept. 1. At 1 o'clock to-day Jones and Thompson (assumed names) were hungfbr murdering; and attempting to rob Wm. 8. Thomas, exchange broker of this city. They rode from the jail to the gallows, each driven in a buggy by one of the sheriffs of the eouatyysmoking their cigars with great calmness, till the moment before their caps were pulled over their eyes, when they shook hands with each other, and without any apparent trepidation, were swung into eternity. Thompson was without any genius of his own, and has been the mere executioner of the villainy of Jones and others. Jones has made a donation confession to Mrs. Oldham, widow of the late jailor. Accord

ing to this, it seems be was born in Eogland, of

good family, and was a merchant in London, where he failed for three hundred thousand pounds sterling snowing assets for one hundred and ninQtyone.

Here, be says, he deposited fifty thousand pounds, without the knowledge of bis creditors, in the hands of a rich banker; brought his wife and three children, (daughters, whom he educated well) to New York, where they married respec

tably, and still live. At this place his wife died, after which he returned to London and claimed of bis banker the fifty thousand pound, who after repeated applications, persisted in denying all knowledge of the matter. He presently met him at some distance .from the metropolis, and stabbed him to the heart; the blood gashed from his bosom, and he dropped out of hi? carriage a corpse. After this, Jones went to the seaboard, engaged in the naval service, excited the crew to m utiny, m irJered every soul on board who refused to join his party, except the captain's wife, with avhrtm hf livrl six or ifrht mnnlhv. anrl n f-

and crew to Africa, took on board three hundred slaves, and steered for the West Indies, twenty-

five or thirty of whom died soon alter leaving the African coast; and being pursued by a British man-of-war, to escape detection, they drowned

all the others. Jones landed at Charleston, S. C.

"Much alarm prevails at the garrisorJ ot laiia-

"We would certainly have captured the entire

Indian army in the above engagement, but the

morass across which they retreated was so boggy

that we were compelled to stop and build a bridge.

It is impossible to describe the impatient ardour

of our troops under this unavoidable check to their

impetuous valor. 1 ney discharged their ntlcs however upon some cedar stumps, and from the

manner in which these were riddled by their bullets, there cannot be a doubt that had the Indians stood there, they would have been annihilated.

'We have to go back forty miles for our bag

gage, after securing which, wo will resume the our suit of the living savages. A few more such

engagements and the war will be gloriously

closed. Our troops are much annoyed by Mus-quitocs.

THE MICHIGAN ROAD. We hope tba liagislatare of this Stale, willat theirensaing

session make liberal appropriations for too improvement of

ibis important thoroughfare. We Jiave had occasion to pass alone; it north of Indianapolis, several times during the past summer, &. in tbe early part of tba season, found it almost

impassable. Had emigrants any idea of the badness of this road they would not venture upo;t it, and we have no doubt

but that it does deter many from moving to the Wabash

couau?, and we know that it is a great dread to thoao liv

ing in that country and who are compelled to visit tho east.

Tho mails cannot be transported with any regularity, and

ior tae greater pari m uto year stages ao not pretend to go i at all. An appropriation ot $50,000 could not bo better 1 made, if judiciously appliod. It has already cost tho State a wUnt of monoj; but the plan of its original construction

was entirely too temporary, and we hops our representatives will give it their attention. We have always bee a of the opinion that more attention should be paid to our eonamon

and Slate roads, than has been by tbe legislature of late yean. Tbey are surveyed, opened, and a few bridges madv, and ihat is the completion of them. For instance, the Stats road from Indianapolis to Lafayette. It was merely taken bom the contractors hands, and for the greater part of the way not ono thing has been done to it sinee, and in ths spring season of the year it is utterly impossible to travil it many of tha brid-as having entirely floated away And our county roads, it would certainly add much to tba

comfort of our citizens and to their prosperity if the law regulatirig them was revissd so as to make it obligatory oa the citizens to work them in a specified manne., so as to save

that which is done, well done. We ask our representatives

to thiok on tbe subject.

The editor of tbe Indianian, published wa balieve at Charleston, bas a long article, attempting to prove that tbe State Bank has forfeited its charter by toe suspension of specie payments, and ia collision uses tha foUo'Ving language :

We are told that every excnio.i has bssn oud by the

baiiks to see and procure pledgas frora ths members elect to

go for a restoration of the forfeited privilr;s, or a re-char

ter. It m not probable the legislature will act JinaUv on

tba question of tbe charter at toe neat session. It is due to

the people that the question go before them It boing ona of

very great importance. We do not believe tho people desire a bank longer. Let Indiana be first ia tho nobis work.

She has now got rid of tho evil, and so let bor remain. That

State which first casts off bor banks will be ia tie beat

nancial condition; ah will draw her supply of specie from

the adjoining States. It is a known fact that paper saoaey

absorbs trie coins, and where there is no paper, specie a bounds.'

What sagacity! Why friend Henley, "you'r gain to cra

zy.' Tba peo-ji ot ladiaaa do not want a bank, do yoo

say? Why you might as wall wipe out tho sua. Voieia-

atiou would Sourish as lively without iu inAuonee, as would the prosperity of Indiana progress without bar bauk. Oet

DISTRIBUTING POST-OFFICE.

While on a recent visit to Indianapolis we were inform

ed tlat active exertions were being made to have the di

uibtting office removed from this place to the metropolis.

Not, we know not what arguments they may have to favor the cmoval ; but as far as wo hava been enabled to see the subjict we think the change would be an unwise one. The

menjact of the distriboting of the mails either in this

plaa or Indianapo'is, cannot be of any advantage to the

putic in general, and if taken to that place, we conceive il

will be but to reward a partizan, who bas ao doubt labored

hart in the cause of modern drmocracy; but it will at the sam time subject the letters for this place, and all tho officii between here and Indianapolis to tbe delay of frequently ping on there to be returned. Eastern publications for subicribers in different parts of the State, are frequently oavelped in a large wrapper and directed to Indiana; when

ther arrive at the distributing office they are undone, and it being here, on the eastern part of the State, they are mailed tirectly to their destination without any extra traveTling or less of time. Would it not be well for out citizens to look to is.

Secretary of War, respectfully claiming the immediate direction of tbe Florida war. He rests his claim upon the grounds, that the theatre of op

Florida, and that he is the senior in rank of the ofcer who is at present commanding the troops

Mr. Nicholas Brvan of New Brighton, went at

being a class leader in the church. He began the meeting by singing as usual, and then knelt down to prayer. He had uttered but a few words

before "the lost enemy Ueatk, seized bold ot him,

and laid his icy hands upon him. Thus giving another evidence of the uncertainty of life, another

loud call to be always ready. Pio position could be more favorable for such a summons, than that

of a believing suppliant at the foot of the cross.
