took the route for Norfolk, crossing Edwarri'd ferry,

and Wynn'e ferry, and passing throujn SuQolk.

On the third day of their j urney, (Winifred siys,),

Richmond produced a suit of boy s clothes, and

told ber she n.ust put them on; but this she per

emptorily refused to do, until overcome at last by

his repeated persuasions she consented, and accor

Ihe story she told at Mr. Cason'a so fir as related to

her intention or going to the north, stating that Richmond had told her first, that he only wanted to go down to Norfolk to buy some thing and try

if he could sell his mistrc8es horse, which ahe

had authotizfd him to do, and then return home.

But this is by no means prob ihle and the fair pre

sumption is. that they were shaping their course

for Arthur Tapptn a dominions, to carry out the amalgamating principle by committing matrimony; in which case the good olJ lady in Halifax would have lest her negro, and Miss would have found a husband! Of this, indeed, there can be no doubt from the fact that the black had upward of 40 in

his possession, and could have raised $100 more from the sale of the horse and cart. They are both held in custody of the jailor the

girl until she can find a conveyance home, and the

negro as a runaway subject to the order ot hi own
