The perplexing duties of an editor, should,

to make him useful and afford an opportunity for distinction, be as much as possible disincumbered by the thousand other harrassiug cares of life, which the present state of the newspaper press in this country, is much better calculated to augment than to diminish. To say nothing ot the competition created by excited politicians, for temporary and sinister purposes, there is a great draw-back on western enterprise, in the cheapness of eastern

periodicals, which, by the greater amount of capital employed, and the facilities for pub!i-

cation to be iound in populous cities, can be afforded with a profit, which would not sustain a small publisher in the west. A foreign article too, though not really superior in quality, carries with it that imaginative value which we are si!, more or less, prone to at

A curious fact, says the Montreal Ami du Peuple, is related in the Frankfort Journals. Upon a hill named Teufelsbem. near the vil

lage of Phillipsthal, there was an enormous rock which elevated itself above fourteen feet

from the soil. In order to remove this rock

at a trilling expense, the lucky idea suggested itself of employ ing the agency of atmos

pheric electricity.- A hole was bored in the

rock, into which was inserted an iron mast ofl

about twenty eight feet high. Upon the first thunder storm taking place, the lightning attracted by this iron conductor, struck and shivered the rock into fragments.
