The Detroit Free Press contains a letter from Washington, of which the following is an extrac. It will be seen tha the President has determined to withhold
from Michigan her share of the surplus reve
nue, unless she consent to come into the Union before January next:
The President is clearly of opinion, that no portion of the dividend of the surplus
revenue, nor the five per cent, on the sale of the public lands, can or will be, under the act of Congress, aid to your state until her admission v. and that if she is not admitted as a state or the Union on the first of January, 1i37, you must lose your portion of the public revenue. The act of Congress, he thinks, requires the surplus revenue in the Treasury
on the first of January to be divided among the. states oa the Union at the time, and that consequently Michigan as a state out or the Union cannot be included. These views I had previously received from the Secretary of the Treasury. Neither the President nor the Secretary considers that anv riirht has
accrued to Michigan in those funds, as a state,
by the passage of the act of Congress for her admission, without her assent to the alteration of the boundary accompanying it."

Van Buren candidates. The aggregate Van . Buren candidates have been elected to Congrass and ten Harrison candidates. The aggregate Van Buren majority on the Congressional ticket is between eight and ten thousand votes. The Van Buren Dartv have
elected a majority to the House of Repre

be apparent that no legislation will be suc
