their naked feet in climbing trees and rocky precipices, had acquired a dexter
ous agility, which to the British troops

The caverns of the Maroons, however.
were destitute of springs of water, and the rains furnished only scanty and temporary supplies. Whan these were exhausted, they for a time slaked their burning thirst on the wild pine, which renders the rocky and sterile desert on the torrrd zone la some measure habitable. But evrn this resource failed, ea their suueriogs for Want of food and water were excessive. In December, 1735, forty chasseur fiom Hav.inna, with about a hundred Spanish dogs, arrived at Montego Bjy. Such extraordinary accounts were immediately circulated of the terrific appearance and savsga nature of these ferocious dogs, that the manhood and courage of the negroes ware shaken, and they sued for peace, and surrendered.
