therefore bespeak for it at this time, know

ing that it has suffered Somewhat in public estimation by the several phases which it has presented within a few months, tbe

attention of the western community. It shall be our desire to inspire general confidence, and merit general support. In

culling matter for the selected part of the

Mirror, we shall diligently ransack the

popular rragazmes of the day, and the a

rious new books that are constantly issuing from the teeming press; and we shall

have an especial eye to variety and raci

ness. In the original department, we have

secured the constant assistance oia number of gentlemen of education, talent and experience as writers. With us, one im

portant aim will be, to bring out and fos

ter the unknown and unencouraged liter

ary talent of the West. The cause of

Western Literature we have long had

heart : and we have made some sacrifices, and labored hard, and we trust not ineffectively, to arouse slumbering energitS,

and elevate the character of the literature of this section of the great Union. Anonymous correspondents shall receive front us respectful attention but as we intend to make the Cincinnati Mirror a correct representative of the literary character of the

West, we must be allowed the privilege oil

rejecting common-place tales, prosing es

says, lame verses, and crudities ot all kinds.' The arrangements which bave been entered into, will place the Cincinnati Mirror under better auspices than have at

tended it at any time since the period of

its commencement. It will contain a lar
