The savage armj approached, and before firing upon die fort, demanded the surrender of the heuce. A brief and well directed bre was the reply. The women as usual moulded bullets, charged the guns, and handed them, and thus enabling them to fire with so much vivacity, as to cause the assailants to recoil. By i.ight thej attempted to fire the house. A savage crawled to the kitchen, and while waving a brand in the air. to kindle the fire so as to communicate it, received a shot from a black man; which sent him jelling awity. An inlent which nromised the savages ucces, in the end operated in fUvor of the besieged. A small boat from fort Pitt, bound to the falls of the Ohio, loaded with cannon balls, put to shore at w heeling. It was steereu ny nnm man. who. though sliehtlv wound ed, reached the tort. The boat of course tell into the hands or the savages. Tliey bad balls in abundance, Mod a single cannon would nave enabled them to batter down the palisade. Necessity with the red as with the white is the mother of invention. A hollow losr was nrocured with a cavity r calibre as nearly fitting the balls, a thej could find. 1 o render me new niaca of ordinance safe, tbey adopted the ingenuous expedient of applying chains obtained from a blacksmith's mhan hard bv. and stronzlv twisted J T them around either end of the wooden and pointed towards the pansaae. "Exasperated to frenzy, they returned from the discomfiture of the log cannon to the assaolt of the house. A deadly fire again compelled them to flu.alul. It was proposed that some one should make a ally among the savages, and bring fiom the fort a keg of powder. Tbo' the enterptise was forlorn, volunteers offered to assume it. A young sister of Col. Zane, who had just tuturued from a boarding school in Philadelphia, was of the number. The besiegers under their native impulses, stood wrapt in admiration and only exclaimed, a squaw ! a squaw IV When arrived at the fort, Colonel Silas Zane, who commanded the fort, filled a tablecloth witb tiie contents oi a aeg oi powaer, ' bound it round her waist, and sent forth his fair and admirable kinswoman on Iter glorious errand. The Indians discovering the object of her mission, were no longer chained into inaction by the daring of the fair squaw, but she escaped untouched through a whole volley of balls, and reached the fort in, safety. A party soon after relieved the fort, and raised the siege. Coon. Our readers recollect that Wm C Preston, of South Carolina, in -one of his furious tirades, applied to the State of North Carolina, the some. what degrading epithet of the Rip Van Winkle of the South." At last the Captain was informed that bis customer was at the market stand, in Ford street, with a waggon load off meat and vegetables. A Connecticut Yankee is not slow for an adventure: so he rigged out his mate in his best suit and sent him up to make a purchase. Th mate fell in. with the market man and besan to barter him for meat and -vegetables. Well, Cap tain, tbey are first chop and you shall nave em cheap. At length the price was agreed upon for a couple of quar ters of veal, a couple bushels of potatoes, and a few cabbages. And now Captain, where will von have them? Ojust drive down the wharf by the side of my vessel. So down they went and the articles were delivered and safely placed on board the vessel, when the Connecticut captain posed his head up out of the cabin, and politely told his old customer that he would give bim credit for these articles on the apple score.
