A DEATH IN THE FAMILY Chapter 71 I had carefully kept Jennie away from Mrs. Page since my return, and excepting one or two unpleasant remarks about my lack of experience in keeping servants, nothing more had transpired. The hcuse was running j-moolhly and little Jack had entirely recovered from his attack of indigestion. "Walter, Walter, come quickly!" We both were wakened by his mother's voice calling in evident agony. Neither waited to dress, but grabbing a robe ran to his mother's rooms. Ru- stood in the middle of her sitting room a tall, gaunt figure In her night-lie'.-;, hugging Fido, and crying. "Get the doctor! Hurry!" she snapped impatiently as Walter hesitated. Tie went to the telephone and called several numbers. Then he came back where we were, I standing helpless hioking at Mrs. Page fussing over the dog. while Mary wrapped her kimona

about her. "T can't get a single man," Walter said. "The fellows don't sleep where the animals are kept." "Get your own doctor! The one we had when darling Fido was sick before." "I don't believe he'll come, mother. Can't you doctor Fido until the dog place opens?" "No, I can't; And you stand there and let him die," she moaned. "Can't you see he's dreadfully ill? Oh, hurry, Walter! Get that doctor here! I don't care what it costs." Walter turned and went back to the telephone a shamed sort of look on his face. I knew he hated to ask the doctor to get up in the night for the sake of looking at a dog. And like , him I thought he would refuse. But kXh said he'd come after a little plead- ' ing on Walter's part. "He'll be here in a few minutes, mother; don't take on so. Fido will be all right." "What shall I do if anything happens to her, mother's pet," she sobbed, while Walter made a face at me. "The dog is as good as dead, Mrs. Page," the doctor said after looking the little creature over. "He's outlived his time anyway. Blind and lame. You shouldn't grieve so." Fido died while the doctor was holding him. Mrs. Page gave way terribly. Finally he prevailed upon her to take a sleeping draught then left. Mrs. Page had laid Fido on a satin pillow beside her on the bed, and so we left her. A woman of great strength of character, possessed of much common sense, who would hesitate to indulge or make a great fuss over a child, yet who wept and had hysteria over the death of a dog. ' I'm glad that dog's gone," Walter ?aid when we were alone. "The mater takes it hard, but it was a nasty little beast. I'll get her a real dog if she wants another." "She won't want another," I told him. The dog had a tiny coffin made of a beautiful rosewood box and Mrs. Page had him buried in a corner of the burial plot held for the family. Then for days she grieved. I think now she grieved all the rest of her life for Fido. But after a bit she stopped talkir.g of her grief and refused Walter's offer of another dog, with scorn. "The house is nice and peaceful-like now that the dog's gone," Jennie said. I couldn't abide it.'' ADVERTISEMENT. TO DARKEN HAIR APPLY SAGE TEA Look Young! Bring Back Its Natural Color, Gloss and Attractiveness. Common garden sage brewed into a heavy tea with sulphur added, will turn gray, streaked and faded hair beautifully dark and luxuriant. Just a few applications will prove a revela (ion if your hair is fading, streaked or j pray. Mixing the Sage Tea and Sul-1-hur recipe at home, though, is troublesome. An easier way is to get a bottle of Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound at any drug store all ready for ue. This is the old-time recipe improved by the addition of other ingredients. While wispy, gray, faded hair is not M'nful. we all desire to retain ouri youthful appearance and attractive-! ness. By darkening your hair with ! Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound, no one can tell, because it does it so naturally, so evenly. You just dampen a sponge or soft brush with it .and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time; by morning all gray hairs have disappeared, end. after another application or two, your hair becomes beautifully dark, glossy, soft and luxuriant.-

I know, Jennie," I said. "But per-j haps when you are old and lonelv vou I

may love something, do something that annoys otners. You can't realize how much iao meant to Mrs. Page. You didn't try. because you disliked the! poop animal. We'll all be old some ! day, and we'll need kindness because ! of our notions perhaps." i m sorry I spoke so cross like bhnnt the trtr ma'om T' . 1 I w.i urn. l a luy JUUlllt?IM used to tell me that very thing: that I i d be old and cranky myself some t day; and I better be nice to old people so I wouldn't be a feeling bad because of how I'd treated them when I was oia myself. "You can try to make up for being rross aoour ine aog ty being thought ful now, Jennie. Not forgetting howl Mrs. .page likes her tea tray arranged, and other things." "I'll do my best, ma'am," Jennie replied meekly. , Tomorrow A Harrowing Situation Heart Problems Dear Mrs. Thompson: We moved here only a few weeks ago and bought our home. We have quite nice neighbors here except one family. It least it seems that way to me. I have two girls at high school. I love them dearly ana would do anything to please them. They used to be fine girls to obey, but since we moved here, I have disobedient children. What would you advise me to do? I would like to be friendly with this neighbor, but I don't know what makes my girl act that way. What would you advise me to do to make her obedient without nagging her? Would it be advisable to keep her away from the other girl at times? Her father works nights and sleeps days. LOVING MOTHER. Invite the neighbor girl to your house for dinner, and encourage your daughters to entertain their friends in their own home rather than go away. Don't mention to your daughters your motive when you say they may have their friend for dinner. If they think you have some motive they will not fall in with your plan so readily. This will give you an opportunity to watch the neighbor child and will help you to decide why your own children are disobedient. Perhaps the allowance system would help more than anything else with your daughters. Give them 10 cents a day spending money, or less as you think best, and deduct a certain amount every time you consider it necessary. I think that you will find that the girls will enjoy their money enough to want to be obedient. ADVERTISEMENT. WOMEN!
