Score was knotted at half time, 16 to 16. The Fljis, who were playing their first game together, were out In front at the start of the game by a field goal by Roland Loehr, Richmond player -who Is attending Wittenberg university. The winners Bcored once more from the field before the locals connected for a field goal and foul counter. Dan Rost was the outstanding performer of the evening for the Phi Delt team. He took plenty of time on his long shots and made the most of them, good. Rost also connected with foul goal3 regularly in the first half. Simmons, Porter, Lovin and Hyde contributed to some of the best pass work which the locals have put up thi3 season, but the athletes were de cidedly off on basket shooting. Visitors Play Well. On the other hand, the Fijis from Springfield deserve considerable credit for the brand of ball which they exhibited. . The players had not played together before, as was mentioned above but their knowledge of a good passing game kept them out in front. stood out in the scoring depart ment for the Springfield outfit, with ' six field goals. Loehr and Farmer con tributed for the remaining scoring honors with three field goals each and two foul goals each. Fang had the opportunity of witness ing an old high school player in action in Roland Loehr, who played a good floor game In Wednesday's engage ment. He accounted for three timely field goals, which helped his team greatly. Springfield enjoyed the engagement here with the exception of the un portsmanlike attitude of several fans. who seemed to care little about the civil treatment of the visiting team. Net Carnival Holds Attracting Interest Interest of the Community Service basketball ' followers is centered on Kthe coming net carnival to be held in the Coliseum Monday night. This ia the third of its kind held so far this season and plans have been made to make thi3 one of the biggest suc cesses of the three. Tickets have been on sale during the past week by any of the players, and they may be bought at the door on the evening of the carnival for 25 cents. Many have been sold and seats have been reserved by DeMolay, Atlas and Glove representatives for their backers, so that each group of rooters will be In a certain section. Much rivalry Is expected to be shown by different backers of teams taking part. Managers of teams are requested to have them ready to play 15 minutes before scheduled playing tiine. FIRST PRESBYTERIANS SURPRISE QUAKERS Teams of the Sunday School league of the Y. M. C. A. played their regularly scheduled games in the Y. M. C. A. gym Wednesday nignt. The surprise game of the evening was the defeat of the West Richmond Friends by the First Presbyterian team, by a 21 to 17 score. Pence and Spaulding played extra good games for the winners, while R- Bantz and Good played a good passing game for thewinners. . R. Bantz also broke up play after play, of the winners that were certain field goals if they had not been stopped. Willard will meet Floyd Johnson, the 190 pound Iowa youth who has created a sensation in heavyweight circles since his debut here last fall when he began hi earnest a march towards the championship. Willard Is being permitted to meet Johnson in a 15 round, bout at the .new Yankee stadium May 12 because the bulk of the proceeds will go to the milk fund of the mayor's; committee of women, for which a charity bout annually is held under the direction of Tex Rickard. A declamation contest was an unusual feature of the first day of the New Paris' farm institute held' here Wednesday. Participants from the different grades who took part in the contest were as follows: Jack Murray, first grade; Julian Clark, eecond grade; George Patton, third grade; Ruth Wagner, fourth grade; Hugh Harris, fifth grade; Dorothy Mulnix, sixth grade; Berthe Kane, seventh grade; Mabel Burke, eighth grade. Sportsmanship is a good thing with which to be branded. A contest was played at the Coliseum ' Wednesday night between the Phi Delta and Springfield Fiji All-Stars. One player on the floor Btood out above the others in calm attitude, heady play and generalship. He played a good, fast game and passed the ball whenever he had the opportunity. DAN ROST I Amateur ball has done nothing to the style of play of Rost, who was a Richmond high school player.last year. He plays a style of game, which is in a class by its self. Illinois was forced to come from behind to win over the Maroons. Hank Potter turned the tide to victory for the Illini in the last few minutes of the game with two field goals, one from under the basket and the other from well out on the floor. Ohio, Feb. 8 March 10 has been fixed as the date for the annual basketball tournament for teams of the Preble county schools, which will, as in past years, be staged in Eaton, in the state armory. BURROUGHS TOPPLE -EATON EX-HI TEAM Burroughs had an easy" time of it In winning from the Eaton ex-Hi team Wednesday night, in the preliminary to the Fiji-Phi Delt fracas, by a 32 to 19 score. The visitors started out with a bang, connecting for twe field goals in tbe first minute of play, but soon after five minutes had passed, their offense began to lag and the Burroughs tied the count. The half ended 22 to 12 with the Fried?itles on the long end. Burroughs started the second half as if they meant to step way out and gain a comfortable margin, but the Eaton team fought to overcome the lead and scored twice in succession. This seemed to add zest to the Burroughs offense and they scored almost at will through the remainder of the contest. Eaton scored one more field goal in this half. Matthews Leads Attack. .
