MAJOR LEAGUE TEAMS "LIKELY WILL RETAIN VETERANS THIS YEAR (By United Press) NEW YORK, Jan. 30. Most of the major league managers are not satisfied over the material they have to work with next season, but the majority -will start -with practically the same clubs they had last year. The two champion clubs will start the season with just about the same lineups they had In 1922. John McGraw says he Is satisfied his world's champion Giants and the world probably will rise up and remark "Why shouldn't he be?" The National league champions, however, will have two newcomers Jimmy O'Connell- and Jack Bentley, who cost th eclub close to $200,000. What this pair will do to earn their price will be one of the features of the season. It is Yankees succeed - In getting Wrtdie Collins from the White Sox, they ought to be a much Improved team nnd they will have to be to win the 1923 pennant.
Collins at second. Bib Falk in tho-
outfield and one of the young Sox
pitchers in reserve, would not make
the Yankathe losers even if they have to part with Meusel, Ward and Hoyt.
With Collins at second, the Yanks
would have an infield almost as good
as McGraw's million-dollar combina
tion and with Falk in the garden, the
American league champs would have
at least one fielder. Daubert May Retire.
Jake Daubert's "decision" to retire if he doesn't get the salary that Garry Herrmann says he will not give him ,y ill force Pat Moran to make a change Vjd his infield. . The Red leader probTvbly will put Fonseca on first, if DauberC does not report, and it would be a fortunate move as John McGraw thinks that Fonseca is one of the best first base prospects in baseball. The Pittsburgh Pirates are still looking for a second baseman. Bill McKenchnie would like to get Sam Bohne from Cincinnati, but after Barney Dreyfuss started the rollers under Rube Benton when Garry Herrmann, had the deal closed for him, it is not likely that the Red chieftain will be Inclined to do anything for the Pirate chief, unless he gets two dollars for one. The magnates will do anything under those conditions. Other Teams Stronger. Tris Speaker is working bo industriously with the can that the Cleveland Indians may have to step out in April with a brand new team. Tris obviously expects a lot of youngsters to make good. Ty Cobb will have a stronger team
in Detroit with Del Pratt on second base and Rip Collins on the pitching
staff.
everyone knows what kind of a good ball player Pratt is and Collins
is just waiting for someone to force
his talent out of him. . Cobb may be
that one.
Chances of the St. Louis Browns depends in large part of what form the
pitchers show down through the
stretch. The team is no better as a whole than it was last season and no team is going to win the pennant on
last years form.
Signing of Frank "Husk" Chance as
manager and the spirited bidding he
made for Joe Boley and Max Bishop
taken as an Indication that Harrv
aze had decided to make a team .S Boston Red Sox, instead of a bargain counter. Boston fans will rise
en masse and yell "It's about time!"

That dear old Boxing Cornish or. New York has performed another that leaves the natives gasping for ozone. Its ruling that Tomaseo Gibbons is quite "to light" to mingle in ring fray with Jacaue Dempsey has come close to paralyzing a multitude. None of the many weird things which the Comish has sprayed upon its festive record books quite compares with its recent ruling that because Dempsey outweighs Gibbons about six pounds, it means that Gibbons is not big enough to quarrel with the champion of champions. In all prize ring history, no heavy weights ever were more equally matched in regard to weight, height and reach than are Dempsey and Gibbons. If a plaster cast were made of Gibbons it would be possible for Dempsey to wiggle into it that'si how closely they are matched in a physical Way. Dempsey notches six feet one inch; Gibbons is six feet one inch tall the same measurements exactly. Dempsey has a reach of something like 78 inches; Gibbons can span about 76

advocated or endorsed by this depart
ment. Mo3t of this legislation is of a radical nature, and, if passed, would cause nothing but trouble and dissension. The legislation the division of fish and game has in mind to introduce has all been prepared and is contained in one bill, but the same is being withheld until it is known what action the legislature may take relative to the future financing of the division. This will be known on or about the 24th inst. The bill the department proposes to introduce will contain mainly the recommendations endorsed at the convention of the Indiana Fish, Game and Forest league.
held on Oct. 26, 1922, at Indianapolis. Many recommendations for laws and amendments have come to the division, and still are coming in, but it is impossible to meet the individual wishes of all. If the division's fi-
nances are interfered with, the won
derful interest now prevalent in all parts of the state may cease to exist. The following are the principal features of the bill the department hopes to introduce in the senate: 1. Terminating all licenses to hunt and fish on Dec. 31 of each year. Outstandings licenses to be good for the term for which they were issued. ' 2. Raising the price of non-resident fishing licenses to $2.25; reducing the non-resident hunting license to $10.50. 3. Establishing a license to take mussels from navigable waters for commercial purposes, both resident and non-re6ident; resident licenses. $5.00; non resident, $15.50. affairs when he decided to tackle John
L. Sullivan in 1902. For Jim boasted of only about 178 pounda on that September day of long ago, whereas Sullivan bounced the scales around 210 a difference of 32 pounds. And when Fitz fought "Gentleman Jim," the champion outweighed the Cornishman about 15 pounds, which would have been construed by the New Y'ork official body had it been operating then as making Fitz entirely too small to fight with Jimmy. Jack Johnson was about 15 or 20 pounds lighter than Jim Jeffries in Reno but the memory of what happened is still too fresh to need an explanatory revival. And in Toledo khew! If the Comish had been bossing things there, it not merely would have halted the fight because it reckoned
Dempsey too small, but it probably would have appointed a flock of doctors to examine Dempsey to determine the exact degree of his insanity. Willard Gets Pounding For Dempsey '"spotted" Willard about six inchea in height, about six

In " spite of examinations this week which will tend to interfere somewhat with practice the Quakers will work out regularly under Coach Mofce. . Not Discouraged The defeat at Franklin last week has not discouraged the Quaker quin- . tet, who are in good spirits and looking forward to a hard fight against DePauw. The fact that the home team went to Franklin in practically the poorest physical condition that they have been in this year, with little actual practice the preceding week and then held off what is popularly be-. lieved to be the fastest team In the state until the last five minutes of play, shows that the Quakers are- coming strong. Given good physical condition and even breaks in the game the locals should be a match to the best
teams in the state. So far this season the Quakers have not been defeated on the home floor and they are anxious to keep a clean
slate. Although DePauw dropped the Quakers in a slow game early in the season the local play ha3 improved a great daei as the season advanced and the chances are fair for a Quaker victory Friday night. - : - The defeat of Wabash and the stiff fight against Franklin have raised the standing of tho locals In state circles -until they are now considered danger-". ous by the fastest teams on the Quaker schedule. DePauw has a strong five and will offer a stiff fight, but with a good week of practice under the tutelage of Coach Mowe the Quakers will be in shape to pot out a gamey scrap against the Methodists.

Making Indiana laws relating to shooting of ducks and other migra-j tory birds conform to the regulations of the federal government; 9. Establishing a closed season on rabbits from January 15th to October 1st, with a proviso 1hat the bona-fide owners of lands or their tenants may kill them at any time whenound doing damage to their property; There are many other changes and additions that might be made, but the above are those the department recommends at this time.
There are two bills rending in the present legislature which this division is striving to defeat, namely. House BUI 51, calling for a five-year
closed season on quail, and House! Bill 92, which asks ior the repeal of; all laws restricting the use of ferets. Thpse measures are in direct conflict with the best thought on game conservation. Quail ''need no protection of this kind. What they need is food and proper cover in the winter. Cold weather with snow and ice. 'and vermin kill more quail than all the hunters. Laws based on sentiment and not in good judgment usually fail of their purposes. There has been a wonderful increase in the number of quail in the state. This has come about under the present law. Today most people are taking an interest in
the birds. Why disturb the situation, and perhaps only create dissension and more law violations? To again permit rabbits to be hunted with ferrets would be pleasing to the game hog, but to the thousands who hunt them with dog and gun, and believe in conserving this game animal. The rabbit is the only game animal existing in the state which is still plentiful. It not only provides snort, but furnishes good food. To
exterminate them would be foolish.)
The little damage they do can be overcome by an act allowing landowners to kill them at any time when fpunrt doing damage to their property. Farmers who desire to drive out rats can harbor ferrets for that under present laws. Trusting you will use your influence to prevent the passage of the two acts I have last referred to, and honing to hold your continued support, I remain, Yours for more game and fish, George N. Dempsey wouldn't be a world's champion "today if the New York State Athletic commission had been dominating things in Toledo in 1919. And, if the commission reckons that a sixpound difference is to great a disparity in weights to authorize the staging of a bout, it would seem that Dempsey is going to remain a champion ad infinitum. HOW TO DARKEN GRAY HAIR
Cincinnati Barber Tells How Make a Remedy for Gray Hair.
to
A well known resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, who has been a barber for more than forty years, recently made the following statement: "Anyone can prepare a simple mixture at home, at very little cost, that will darken gray hair, and make it soft and glossy. To a half-pint of water, add 1 ounce of bayrum, a small box of Barbo Compound and i ounce glycerine. These ingredients can be bought at any drug store at very little cost. Apply to the hair twice a week until the desired shade is obtained. This will make a gray-haired person look twenty years younger. It is easy to use, does not color the most delicate scalp, is not sticky or greasy and does not tub off." Advertisement
NEVER USE DRUGS To Relieve or Prevent Colds Drugs are liable to have an injurious effect upon the nerves or heart. A pure, healthful, laxative he,rb tonic like Bulgarian Herb Tea is very effective and positively harmless just take it steaming hot with lemon juice at bedtime. It helps break up a cold quickly.
