The Will To Live "The will to live means more tha the consent to remain alive," says the Philadelphia Public Ledger. "It means putting the most into
life and getting the most out of it. It knpliesj
optimism, good temper and courage the readiness to accept what the hour brings, of pain ' or delight. It means the 'faith that looks through death' and the fulfillment of duty, svhether there is fun in it or not. "Whoever has the will to live communicates to others, who may have grown fainthearted on the way, a like decision. The leaders of the race (not the more demagogues, who blind and delude a part of the crowd for a time) are those who set an example, in their own demeanor, of the heroic virtues, without posing as virtuous. They never know the good they do. They are beyond the reach of thanks and praise. Why do we make shrines of pilgrimage, of the graves of Washington or Roosevelt? Not because they .were more than mortal. Both had their imperfections. But because, made of like friable clay with the rest of us, they showed what a man may attain unto if he wills it. "To make a success of living is not a matter
of brawny anatomy. We rise up to bless many who gave their beautiful lesson to the" race from a sick-bed. There is the host no man may num
ber, of those whose noble spirits dwelt in the1 frailest physical tenements and shone like lanterns there. "But their souls were in command of their lives, and so had power -on other lives. In the ordinary social contracts we do not say much of our souls, even as we do not wear our hearts upon our sleeves and, indeed, it would be morbid if we were loquacious to a stranger in these matters. "Yet the difference among v people is estar lished for us by the essential nature and not by 'those troublesome disguises that we wear.' One brings into the room a pulse-quickening sense of new life; another brings depression or stupefaction. The first is aglow with vitality; the second is moribund, ambitionless and thought-paralyzing for all the rest where he may come. "Those with the will to live enkindle in others a desire to be like them. That is why we require in our teachers and preachers, before all other qualities, vitality; and it is why the greatest teacher of them all said, 'I am come that ye might have life, and have it more abundantly.' A mere tame acquiescence in our lot, a pious resignation to existence for a time in a vale of tears, is not living. "Each of us in the struggle is likely to forget that the battle is never fought for a man"s self alone. Another is always lifted up or pulled clown by what we do and are. None ever surrendered without tempting another to give up; none ever fought on without inspiring another to persevere."
"IT DOTH NOT YET APPEAR' By George Matthew Adams.
There Is the rustle and the hustle and the bustle of the day. Every man and woman even to the child busy at the string of life. And then the gray of the closing chapter. The wheels stop. Offices are emptied. Cars, and trains, and hurrying feet and then home! A little reading, a little v playing, a little walk out under the stars and then that brief little trot of ours into dreams and forgetfulness. Such passing chapters J Almost before we know it, the book Is finished. Just one short year ago, this old year was new and now we are in a new one! And in just a little while this new one will be old. But there is nothing to worry about, and everything to take heart in for "it doth not yet appear what we fchall be." Each of us may be building greater and surer than we know. It is our privilege to do our work and to get happiness out of it. And if we. are not getting happiness out of it, we are not doing our work well. Our duty is to do the job at hand with zest and not mind the results. They will take care of themselves. To be thoughtful, efficient, considerate to ask few questions, to smile through, to believe in ultimate good, and above all to keep faith with the faintest whispering of our honest nature then what matter if "it doth not yet appear what we shall be?-' At the fittest time, the most obscure hero may have his inning. Your bravest task is to keep fit and ready. So that when your greatest hour of opportunity does come, you won't have to run off and wash your hands before stepping out before the crowd from where you stand, to answer "ready!"

The United States public health service says that snow falling to the ground is the purest form of water
known. It is only after it is stepped on or contaminated by handling that it becomes dangerous. Care should be taken to let children eat only a moderate quantity of newly fallen snow as there is a possibility of chilling the stomach. Do not handle the snow in collecting it as food. No. 893 The Whirling Napkin A folded napkin is set on top of a pencil. The pencil is turned in small guick circles, and tho napkin whirls on top of it (see Fig. 1). This appears to be an extraordinary bit of jugglinj. There is, however, a very clever secret to the trick, which requires no skill. Remove the rubber tip from the pencil, and push a email, short needle through the rubber, so that it sticks out at the top (see Fij. 2). Tha napkin is pressed on this needle point, which is concealed in the folded cloth. The napkin will then spin very easily I the needle is loose in the rubber, the needle may be removed with the napkin, and the . pencil exhibited for inspection. Farmer is Getting Results Railways Appoint Representative to Study Demands of Farmer for Adequate Shipping Facilities.
By FREDERICK J. HASICI?! WASHINGTON, D. C, Jan. 17. The last few days' have brought two fresh developments in the achievements of the American farmer in the matter of organization for the improvement of his economic position. First, the federal reserve board has issued two important rulings liberalizing the banking rules of the federal reserve system in favor of the farmer. Second, the American Railway association ha3 appointed a special agricultural representative whose duty it will be to travel about the country and seek to meet the demands of the farmer for shipping facilities. These developments add to the long series of triumphs already scored by the newly awakened American farmer. Over the last two years, the tillers of the soil have been organizing their forces and making demands and so far they have not failed in any instance. The farmer in normal times frequently is the butt of the city man's

Old Brown had had a terrible morning. He could not walk, and had engaged a man to pull him about in an invalid's chair. Twice they had nearly been crushed under a tramcar, and once the invalid-chair man had almost dropped his charge into a river. They halted at the top- of a very
steep hill. At first Brown welcomed the halt. But at last he began to get restless. "Why are you stopping here?" he asked, nervously. "It's all right, guv-nor," the attendant replied, unconcernedly. The "hayseed," the "rube" and the "jay" have been subjected to a great deal of ridicul.e But normal times are a thing of the past Many miracles were performed by the war and one of the greatest was the galvanization of the American farmer into a great political force capable of bringing about economic reforms that such traditionally powerful influences as "Wall Street." "the Interests" and such could not achieve. The. explanation is that the rural population is nearly 50 per cent of the entire population of the United States. People who live in big cities, various industrial groups and the several organizations of different sorts are intensively organized and they feel that the lonely farmer out in the country can not possibly amount to much. They have been forgetting that the

Irresistible force felt. The two recent developments Indicate that he is increasing hl3 power.
The principal reform on which the ' farmer has concentrated his attention .
has been improvement in farm credits. He has complained tbat the merchant and the manufacturer can get all the financial accommodation they need at the banks, but the farmer can not. The answer to all this has . been that farmers want money for too long a time. The merchant or manufacturer
borrows for from 30 to 90 days. The farmer wants to borrow for periods ruilning from six months to a year and the stock raiser wants to borrow for three years. There are indications now that this need will be met. The new ruling of the federal reserve board provides that bankers' acceptances a form of notes running for six mouths may be handled through the federal reserve banks and also that acceptanc sesecured by crops held in storage may be discounted at these banks. This puts the farmer on the same basis, practically, with the merchant and manufacturer. It gives the

That is precisely what happened. During the war the farmer got good prices, but his costs were high. Suddenly, the crash came in the summer of 1520, when prices of all sorts of commodities tumbled down, headed by
farm products. The farmer had planted his crops at high cost; he was com-

The ruling was made with special reference to fanners' co-operative associations. It now is permitted for these co-operatives to frsue acceptances based on their crops and have these acceptances cashed by the member banks of the federal reserve system. The storage ruling is of special importance. One of the bitterest complaints of the farmer is that when his crop is made he must dump it on he market because he can not borrow

The agricultural bloc in congress was the first achievement of the newly organized farmer. Members of both senate and house were quick to see that the organized farmer was the most powerful factor in the country and that he meant business. There followed a quick succession of develop
ments to improve his position. First, railroad rates on farm products were lowered so that farm products could be

One of his oldest complaints is that his crops often rot on the ground because he can not get cars in which to shi; them to market. It will be part of Mr. Knutson's duties to take care of such complaints and provide ample car supplies, where possible, for farm 6bi pers. The farmers want still more things and. doubtless, will get them. They want a whole new banking system for their special uses and revised railway rates, with more things additional than appear on a list in a letter to Santa Claus.
