TWEEDLE-DEE AND TWEEDLE

DUM Chapter 47 . George Harter, as I have said before, seemed to try to be alone with me, rather where he could talk to me without being overheard. I disliked his attitude immensely and was gradually beginning to dislike him because of it. No matter where we were motoring, dining, or at a play, he would maneuver to be next to me, would whisper silly nonsense, and in other ways annoy me. One day I spoke of him to Walter. "I do wish George wouldn't be quite so confidential," I said. "He embarrasses me." "What do you mean?" Walter asked. "Oh, it isn't much," I replied, "but he has a way that says he'd make love to a woman if he dared. Then he always tries to make me ride on the front scat with him and whispers when he could just as well talk right out." . "You niust encourage him or he wouldn't do it," Walter replied with all a man's inconsequences. "But I don't!" "Harter is a man of the world. He isn't making any advances to a woman unless he knows she likes it," he said impatiently. I dropped the subject, had forgotten all about it. but. Walter hadn't. Every little while he would pay something to me about Harter, especially if we were to be where he

was. Gradually, very gradually, it dawned upon me that he was jealous. It was too ridiculous! I really disliked George Harter, and even had I not, I was too much in love with Walter to ever think of another man. One night when he had been particularly disagreeable, pouting and acting very much like a small boy, I accused him of it. We had been out to a road I ; houtie, just we four, and George had been 'particularly attentive, but no - more so than Walter was to Grace. "Tlwre's a difference between Twee-die-dee and Tweedle dum, isn't there?" '1 asked. "You were Just as devoted to Jrace, more so even, than George was to me." "Grace isn't my wife! I don't pro

pose to let George Harter or any other man make a fool of me." I laughed. I couldn't help it. Walter became very angry and left the house In a huff. But he could not long retain anger and so I didn't worry. But what should he do but drive out 1o Helen Ralstrom's and take her for a moonlight ride "to get even" he told rue when he came home, for all the world like a sulky boy. I had spent the evening alone, Mrs. Fage with some friends. I tried to be rice about it but we quarreled. I told Walter I wished I had not mentioned Harter to him. and he retorted: "Wished I didn't know it, eh? Think (I'm blind. I suppose. As it had made no difference in his actions toward Harter, I thought him unfair, and paid so. "We can't chuck all our friends because you let them think you like their nonsense!" he declared. "I shall be mighty cool to George Harter; they're your friends, not mine. I'm not at all sure I like Grace either-" I told him. "That's right! Make a goose of yourself, then talk like that."

I made no answer. His injustice hurt j me dreadfully and I cried myself to i sleep.

4 The next morning I awoke heavyeyed, unrested. Walter was In the hathroom whistling a popular song and when he came out spoke as if nothing hnd happened: jf "It's a fine morning, Doreen! Hurry tuid get dressed. I'm as hunery as a wolf!" 1 made no answer, and he looked at me. then said: "Why, Doreen! I was pretty much

of a brute last night, wasn't I? You look as if you had cried all night! .You're a silly girl. Come here and kiss me this minute!" j Not a word about being mistaken or i eorry beyond that first expression "I I was pretty much of a brute" but I flew i into his arms, and commenced to cry i again from sheer relief. I wasn't the ! weepy port and he scarcely knew what I to make of it. But he petted me a lit- j tie, then again asked me to hurry and j dress. I heard him out in the dining room, joking with Jennie, playing with ! Fido. For him the incident was closed, j He had kissed and made up. i Mrs. Page spoke of my looks and. j woman-like, I, -pleaded a headache, said ! I had not slept well. Walter threw me I a grateful glance. He hated his mother j to think he made me unhappy; always i called me a "good sport" when I hid j anything he did to hurt me from her. ; Tomorrow Three Not a Crowd i

Allege Telegraph Company Violated Labor Statute (By Associated Press) DETROIT, Mich., Jan. 12. Whether the Western Union Telegraph company violated the contract labor law by

bringing 25 young women .rmployes to the United States after they had been deprived of their jobs in New Found-

Judge Arthur J. Tuttle. Five of the girls were placed in the Detroit office of the telegraph company. The immigration authorities sought their deportation. The case wa3 brought into court yesterday in a habeas corpus hearing. Attorneys have been given

serviceable to me because it. could serve as a befet' dress al ter marriage. Do you think it would be terrible if I didn't wear white? WEDDING BELLE Since your wedding is to be so informal, wear whatever you want to. I agree with you that it would be unwise to get a white dress when a darker shade would be of real service to you. Ignore convention and be individual when you know that it ia better for you to do so.

If you have a passion for candy, eat it after a meal, it will digest more easily and satisfy as readily your general craving for sweets. After aH, this craving for something intensely sweet is quite nayiral. Sugar is highly stimulating and many of us are so made that our systems demand this stimulation from food. It needn't be encouraged any more than a similar and more highly developed craving, that is, a craving for alcohol, should be encouraged. - It is found usually in two classes of

CHOCOLATE CREAM COMPLEXIONS

The best way to spoil a beautiful skin is t,o eat between meals, and to overeat of sweet things. When I say chocolate cream complexions I am lumping under one phrase the soda water counter complexion, which is pimply, the pie and cake complexion which is (and no joke is meant in this serious business) dough and the pasty skin of the one who habitually overeats. Chocolate creams are not the only sinners! The thing to remember is, not to eat between meals. You can get along
