Boys are 6ald to have been seen playing in the alley near the stable shortly before the fire. Surrounding property was endangered. DAYTON MAN ASKS $25,000 DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF LEG

DAYTON, Ohio. Jan. 12. C. Mercer, Piqua. Christmas charged that J. C. Mercer, son of Paul Mercer, was operating his father's aillomobila Christmas day when he was struck by the vehicle at the Needmore road and the new Troy pike.

Surgeons at the Miami Valley hospital amputated Christmas' leit leg. Vo s Mercer was arrested by a deputy uuder Sheriff Cusick, with another man who gave the name of J. R. Hennessey. It is said that Hennessey claimed to have been operating the automobile. Mercer was taken before Justice of

(Continued from Page One ) Republican members carry their oppo

sition to Longworth to such an extreme it might be, it is admitted, fatal to Republican chances to remain in control of the legislative machinery of the next house of representatives. The Republicans will only have a bare majority. Of the 435 members of the next house there will be 225 Republicans, 207 Democrats and three members of other parties. The three independent members will, as a rule, vote with the Democrats. That being the case, the Republicans, with a full party vote, would have a majority of only 15 over the Democrats and their independent allies. Some May Bolt And, It is pointed out, certain mem

bers of the majority are Republicans in name only for the most part. Ten of the 11 Wisconsin congressmen in the next house were elected on the Republican ticket, but tbey are LaFollette followers and no more amenable to party leadership and discipline than their chieftain who sits in the senate. Should these 10 Wisconsin members bolt the Republican candidates for speaker and for majority leader and vote with the Democrats that party would, without the three independents,

poll 217 votes against a possible Republican vote of 215, turning over control of the house to the Democrats by a majority of two. It is possible that the liquor question will play some part in the election of a Republican floor leader. Longworth will have the support of the national anti-prohibition organization. Graham has always been a dry, but in a passive manner.

Hennessey is now at liberty on bond in probate court, as the defendant in the punitive action. New Office Building. Construction of a new 22-story office building on South Market street to be
