OBSCENE LITERATURE MARRING OUR YOUTH, SAYS REV, WOODMAN In his talk before the Parent-Teacher association of the Dennis high sc hool Wednesday evening, Charles M. AVoodtnan of the West Richmond Friends church, stressed the opportunities for co-operation among all those forces that contribute to make the character of the boy and girl. He deplored the fact that the child's attention la being dissipated by too many outside Interests. He Epoke of the possibility of having the best art, which is so easily within the reach of all, in the home as well as in the school. Numerous things make or mar the lives of our children. "We can make rather than mar our youth by cleaning out those nests of nastiness which persist in. fouling our children's minds with obscene and suggestive literature. If the magazine dealers of this city are decent they will gladly eliminate this stuff from their counters on the request of any coneiderable group of people. If they . are not, and persist in this sort of vile propoganda, they , should be pilloried by public opinion, or an ordinance can be passed which will effectually Bhut off the supply of their besmirching literature. "We can make rather than mar the lives of our children by constructively supporting our city administration in the work it is doing to eliminate sources of crime from the community. There are pitfalls for unwary feet at
every turn of the road. The bootlegger, the gambling resort, the cigaret seller, the dance hall are yawning hasm3 in the pathway of the boy and the girl "I believe it is a most fitting thing ihat we should in private and public c ommend the mayor and the city council for the ordinance they have passed which aims to revolutionize public dancing in this city. The public dance in this community had been a positive menace to its morals and . stain upon its name. Its proper reg ulation under the present ordinance will, make every father and mother breathe easier, and in the light of the history of the dance evil in thia city we are to be congratulated upon having a mayor and council who unhesitatingly attempt this moral house cleaning. "Juvenile delinquency is a problem in every city, and its acuteness is felt all the time in every municipal court. Twice in the past week there has come under my personal observa tion just such questions. We should be thankful that we have a man in the mayor's chair who goes out of his way to salvage the manhood of those who are brought before him." HONEYCUTT TO HEAD TOWNSHIP FARMERS
( Special to the Palladium) GREEN'S FORK, Ind., Jan. 11. Walter Honeycutt was re-elected president, T. C. Davis, vicepresident, and Lewis Kinsey, secretary-treasurer, at the annual meeting of the Clay Town?hip Farmers' association held in the Odd Fellows' hall at Green's Fork, Wednesday night. Reports of the officials for the past year and routine matters also occupied the time of the meeting. ' Following a discussion of the pro7'osed county unit school system by V. ormer trustee Charles Bond, and others, a resolution was adopted opposing a change on the grounds that it would take away the local control of the school and result in an unequal taxation burden. The secretary was instructed to inform the county representative by telegram, of the action, and two remonstrances were started among teachers and school patrons, lor signatures and later transmission to the state capitol. WASHINGTON i Screen vampires as well as sirens in real life are not alway successful In their efforts. If you do not believe it, just read what Nita Naldi has to say. And she ought to know, for she is probably the most talked of Circe of the films today. "When one plays vamp roles she surely has her troubles," said Miss Naldi. "In 'Blood and Sand' I just walked away with the heart of the young bull fighter (Rodolph Valen tino) but in 'Anna Ascejids' I don't seem to be getting anywhere trying to steal the love of a young newspaperman (Robert Ellis). Maybe it's because newspapermen are too hardboiled. "These scenario writers are smart persons. They know when their hero should be vamped and when he shouldn't. However, it makes no difference what happens in the end for I have to work just as hard whether I win 'em or not. Miss Naldi's latest role is that of Countess Rostoff, of uncertain origin in "Anna Ascends," Alice Brady's new Paramount picture which came to the Washington theatre today. Robert Ellis plays opposite the star and David Powell has a strong role. 4 "Kempy" which has played the Belmont Theatre in New York for six months, will be seen here at the Vic tory Theatre, Dayton, for four days starting Sunday, January 14th, following a brilliant engagement at the New Selwyn Theatre, in Chicago. "Kempy" was written by J. C. and Elliott Nugent, father and son, the former well known as a vaudevillian, having appeared for many seasons as a headliner in his own brightly written sketches, the latter a promising young actor who last season played in "JDulcy." Both authors are also members of the company presentine: "Kempy," together with Ruth Nugent, the younger daughter -and one of the most promising ingenues tf the present day. The featured member of the cast is Grant Mitchell, who will be well remembered by Daytonians for his appearance here as a star in "The Champion" and "The Tailor Made Man." Others who are members of ttve company are: Isabella Wither, Jessie Crommette, Frederic Going and Robert Lee Allen. . "Kempy" tells a story of small town life which is replete with humor but is devoid of any suggestive lines or situations. It is a play which pleases both young and old and is admirably suited to family theatre parties. The engagement at the Victory Theatre begins on Sunday evening and runs for four days. MURRAY The Murray theatre is presenting today, Friday and Saturday the Playgoers feature, "Lonesome Corners," said to be a delightfully humorous comedy drama. Its locale is the Maine-Canadian border where a man of culture is banished for 10 years if he would inherit a fortune. Loneliness drives him to marriage with a pretty but- ignorant and wild girl of the woods. When Grant Hamilton, a man from his world, comes into the woods, accepts his hospitality and then repays him by kidnapping his wife, hubby is due for a much needed awakening. Edgar Jones, who produced "Lonesome Corners," plays a leading part, supported by pretty Edna May Sperl, Henry Van Bausen, Walter Lewis and Lillian Lorraine. MURRETTE "I'm proud to have the name of Terry once more to the front in the theatrical world," Alice Terry admitted in reviewing her sensational riseto the leading roles iu the Rex Ingram productions for Metro of "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and now "The Prisoner of Zenda," which is at the Murrette theatre. "To me there is a golden radiance about the name: I suppose primarily the gloriole that hangs about the memory of Ellen Terry in her prime. And Rt OVEKS FROM I. for my own part I am anxious to b.elp carry on the best traditions of the Terry family. I look back with pride to the records made by the descendants of Benjamin Terry and Sarah Yarrett; I like, too, the consistency with which they married into other actor families. Just think of it! Fred Terry and Julia Neilson, with their children, Dennis and Phyllis Neil-son-Terry; Kate Terry and Arthur. Lewis and Mabel Terry Lewis; Marion and Florence Terry! "And the funny part of it is I knew hardly a thing about these traditions two years ago. When I first went on the screen as an extra L knew little of the theatre and my family were not enthusiastic; they didn't want me to use the family name. Another extra suggested I take the name of Terry; 'It's a first-class theatre name,' she said. It meant nothing in my life'then; so I took it. And now I'm proud that I ve kept it as a first-class name. Miss Terry was christened Alice Taafe, when she was born twenty years ago in vincennes, Ind., and this year her name in private life has been changed again to that of Mrs. Rex In gram. But it is as Alice Terry that she gained fame, and Alice Terry she is always going to remain to the public. "The Prisoner of Zenda" was adapted by Mary O'Hara from Anthony Hope's novel. John F. Seitz photo graphed it. The stage version is by Edward Rose. MOTHERS AND THEIR CHTLDJtEN "Playing Bear" for Health If there has been a circus in town recently, or if they have visited the zoo, the children may be easily interested in "playing bear" by getting down on hands and feet, keeping the knees fairly straight, and reaching well forward with the hands to make long steps. The head, of course, must be kept up so that the bear can see where he is going. Children will play this game gladly, not knowing that this is a splendid exercise for the head and spine. Two full moons appeared in January and two in March, 1S66, while February that year had no full moon. THREE ROBBERIES AT DAYTON ARE CHARGED TO NEGRO PRISONER DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 11. Police cleaned up a series of three robberies when Detectives Rice and Wheeler arrested Elic Dixon, 25, colored. New Orleans, La., last night. Dixon admitted to police that he stole a box containing a saxophone valued at $150 from an American rail way express truck last week, a box of pocketbook3 from another express delivery truck at Third and Main streets, and two bundles of laundry from a delivery truck of the Advance Laundry company on South Main street. Dixon said he took the saxophone from the truck while it --was parked in front of a store. The saxophone was consigned to the Wurlitzer Music company, South Ludlow street. Detectives say the instrument was pawned Tuesday in Cincinnati for $28. A number of pocketbooks and two bundles of laundry were found by police, it is said, when they searched his room at 330 Sprague street yesterday. The pocketbooks were the property of Oelman company. It is expected that more of them will be recovered. Laundry company officials paid owners of the stolen clothing yesterday noon in order to avoid damage suits, and a few hours later the loot was recovered.
