REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR IS HEAD OF MISSOURI DEMOCRATIC ASSEMBLY
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Dec. 2C A policy of retrenchment, reduction of state expenses and taxes, and reform or - abolition of several bureaus and commissions, are among the issues expected to come before the Missouri legislature, which convenes January 3. Both houses are Democratic in majority, while Governor Arthur M. Hyde is a republican. Equal educational opportunities, for rural children and laws affecting the betterment of child welfare, are the two chief subjects in which Missouri's first women legislators are interested, t Mrs. Edward James of Johnson, counv ty has announced as a candidate for chaplain of the house and, if elected, will be the first ever to have held the office. Mrs. James is an ordained minister of t he Baptist church.

GREAT BUTTER COW A new queen of the dairy world has been crowned at Austin, Minnesota, This marvellous milker. May Walker Ollio Homestead, completed her oneyear test on December 18th, with a record of 1,218.50 pounds of butter fat. or the equivalent of 1,523.2 pounds of butter, from 31,010.6 pounds of milk. The new dairy queen, over all breeds and ages, displaces the former American record held by Duchess Skylark Drmsby, and is owned by the Minnesota Holstein company of Austin. The new champion is a seven-year-old and w eighs 1,765 pounds. Her milk tested 2.S5 per cent. Her grain ration during this test rear consisted of bran, ground oats, distillers' grains, hominey, oil meal, Jlufen and cottonseed, with salt and a limited amoufit of mineral compounds. She also was fed liberal amounts of alj 'alfa hay and, during the later part of t her test, corn ensilage and beets. In no calendar month did she produce less than SO pounds of butterfat, or 2,000 pounds of milk. iSor did she pro3uce over 3,000 pounds of milk in any month. She carried a calf for almost six months of her test period.
It will be observed that thi mat ! . . . - " I iow promicea nearly her own weight ;n uutter in twelve months. Packers Make Money To say that packers make money Beans but little to the average farm?r. He expects the packers to make i profit. His only concern is that they 3o nt mnke too great a margin in the turning of his live stock into meats. This also is the concern of the consumer, which means the entire public. But packers do not always make money; in fact, the big houses took ?ome tremendous losses during the era af reconstruction and falling prices. Our figures for 1921 showed that to be true. Take the Cudahy report j ror example. That firm showed! an operating loss of $1,570,000 on their business in 1921. -And while they report profits of $1,231,500 in. 1922, it will be seen that the losses of 1921 have not yet been evened up. After payment of dividends on all preferred stock.i at the end of their fiscal year there remained a net balance in the treasury of $652,961. The dividend on the common stock was passed and the amount carried to surplus account. The Cudahy company is one of the emaller in the ".Big Five" combination and its year ends with October, as does that of all the others, Wilson and company excepted. The Cudahy sales in 1922 totaled $160,164,000. On their weekly trade review Armour & Co. report the beef trade as "lacking snap," except for fine Christmas beef. Pork trade and that in cured meats is excellent and collec tions are good. TIw n:irkiRr industry is exnet-tine effect during the coming year. Xoth - ing new in relation to that proposition has come out of Washington lately. j Sows Less Winter Wheat. ! The Nebraska state report of the acreage of winter v heat sown last fall shows it to be 830,000 acres less than in 1921, and 235.000 under the fivevear average. The total for 1922 is placed at 3,319,000, acres. According to the report of Secretary Mohler, of Kansas, the crop of winter wheat this year totalled 117,000.000 bushels, or 6,000.000 bushels below the final estimate of the government. Senator Moses, of New Hampshire, .says that, the senate is an Arcadian body. The remark, was- made in his address before the New England society at the one hundred and seventeenth anniversary dinner last week. "I speak of it deliberately as that Arcadian body," he said, "because it is ruled by an agricultural bloc made up of 18 lawyers, one editor and a well digger." Senator Capper is the editor, of course, but the identy of tho well digger is not disclosed. No Mere Free Seeds. Representative Langley, of Kentucky offered an amendment to the agricultural appropriaVons bill, to add ?366.000 for free distribution of seed by memhers of congress, last Friday, and the house voted it down. This came as a surprise and upseta precedent of .long standing, the usual course in the past having been for the appropriations committee to eliminate the item and the house to vote it back into the bill. Advocates of the Langley amendment were so certain of victory that they cut off debate and voted down a proposal by Begg, of Ollio, that no free

Investigations show that timothy, our most important hay grass, has 1.2C0.OO0 seeds to the pound as compared with Jwice that number for Kentucky blue grns'?. nearly four times as many for Redtop, and not quite so many lor Bermuda grass. These rank next to timothy in importance among the tame grasses. Similar statistics have been prepared for most of the other grasses in this country. Altogether, there are about 6,000 varieties of grass seed in the world, according to the department of agriculture, but cn!y 60 of them are valuable. Rust Resistant Wheats. Black stem rust is recognized as one of the worst scourges of the wheat crop. The department of agriculture has co-operated with state institutions in experimental tests t') find, out the different varieties of winter wheat which are resistant to black stem rust. It appears that this is one of the best methods of fighting the disease. Kanred wheat and two similar varieties were the only winter wheats out of about 100 varieties that proved to be resistant. Several types of spring wheat proved resistant. A few Durum or macaroni wheats showed definite signs of being resistant to black stem rust. Farmers of this country entered over 194,000 cows in cowtesting associations last year to find out how much butter fat each animal produced. This was the result of demonstrations showing the value of this work. Wool Tariff and Frcfits A woolen mill company recently declared such an exiraordinary stock dividend that it attracted the attentjpn of the entiie country. When a divi dend increases a capitalization of $15 000 to S.i00,000, and when that increase comes from surplus earnings, littie ltskes notice. Newspapers have freely commented on this dividend and the Indianapolis News editorially discussed it, as follows: "It was announced yesterday that the Davis and Brown Woolen company, of Usbridge, Mass., had declared a stock dividend of 3,233 per cent, the effect of which action is to increase the capital stock from fl,",000 to $500,000, all of which is built up out of surplus earnings. Theso lafer amounted to $740,000. This firm is the representative of an industry that our lawmakers found it necessary to protect by extraordinary duties, the assumption being that the industry was either an infant one, or else so feeble even though of long life that it could not stand alone against the competition cf pauper Europe, and Europe is Jndeei a pauper. "So all the people in the country were, and now are Heavily taxed to give this protection to an industry in which 3,233 per cent stock dividends are possible, and common stock, without the advance of a single dollar from stockholders, can be and is increased from $15,000 tr $300,000. ' It only remains for the company to-figure in "structural overhead"" and all will be well. We think that this case and it is by no means an isolated one ought to be of great interest to tb.3 people who are being compelled by the pressure of the new and exorbitant tariff taxes to pay much higher prices for their clotring in order to 'maintain the American standard cf living.' Certainly tho standard of living of those who pay these taxes and prices is not raised nqt even maintained at the old level."
