FRENCH TAXI DRIVER MAKES WAR OH "TIP" BUT SOON WON OYER
(By Associated Press) PARIS, Dec. 23. A man who did not want a tip caused incipient riot in Paris recently. H" was the owner of a taxi motor-cab and thought ho could operate his own property as ha
saw fit. So he placed on his vehicle a sign reading: "I own this taxi, and I accept no tips." The ruction was caused, not by a rush of customers, but by the ange
of fellow taxl-drive-s. "What does this upstart mean?" asked one, climbing down from his seat and hurrying toward the revolutionary car with threatening vigor.' "Renegade" cried other chauffeurs from the cab tand.' Epithet followed epithet, aci meanwhile the crowd grew after the fashion of street crowds in Paris, with the customary baker's boy, butcher's boy and flock of "Midinettes." When the crowd had grown to impressive proportions the owner of the taxi said to his colleagues: "You don't appear to like this announcement." There was a lond chorus of "No." With no backing from possible customers, the au
dacious taxi proprietor- decided to
capitulate. So he took down his sign, the crowd melted, and the tipping system was saved. .

Former Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria. Bavarian republicans believe they have discovered a monarchist plan to place former Crovrn Prince Rupprecht in power and restore tl.e throne. They believe that the bill to create a "state president," introduced in the diet by the reactionaries, is a part of this plan. A figurehead would be ut up first and then Rupprecht wouldstep in, republicans assert. .

Mail Carrying In Alaska
Expensive For Uncle Sam WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 The high
est per capita cost of the United States
postal service is in Alaska where the
government spends $200,000 per year for overland mail service to serve 38,000 white men. Pack trains, dog teams and other primitive methods of transportation are employed. However, the Importance of this service is illustrated by the fact that these men regulate their lives by the postal routes. The government inspector wrho recently visited Alaska found that men served by these mail routes waited until 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning for the arrival of the carriers. The coming and
going of a mall carrier in these communities is distinctly an event, it be
ing the only time the communities come In touch with the outside world.1
