ALL VIOLIN LOVERS
AMATI INSTRUMENT
(Amy D. Putnam, in Washington Star) Violin lovers throughout the world
This is in the possession of Charles Ayer Whipple, of 1630 Rhode Island and proving of another Amati violin, will welcome the news of the finding n northwest, the artist who is restoring the Brumidi decorations in the Capitol. "Through my profession is painting," says Mr. Whipple, "my hobby is music, and particularly violins. I have always been deeply Interested in them." ' Mr. Whipple has had this violin since 1S83. When he purchased it he realized that4 it was a fine violin, and saw the signature in it: "Xicolaus Amatus fecit in Cremona 1675." He is very much surprised to discover that it is a genuine Amati, because the name plates of the old violin makers were used in all6orts of cheap instruments. An expert in early printing declares that this label was printed with wood type, which would not be the case if this were a faked sign manual of the master violin maker, as so many are. The wood type label would argue it to be genuine. One name , only; has received more general recognition than , that of Amati, and -that is Stradivarius, or ptradivari. - The Stradivaris .bring more money, and . are a little more powerful, but. the Amati s are well
beloved among violinists themselves,1
because of the sweetness of their tone and the great beauty of their form. It Is a strange thing that the shape of the violin eince Amati's time has never ben improved upon. For more than two and a half centuries no real improvements have been made in the shape, although some makers
have sought diligently to find some
slightly different form that will be as
beautiful and effective. The saying goes that three things man has made have never been improved upon the Indian snowshoe, the birch bark ca
noe and the violin.
