DOREEN WINS MRS. PAGE'S APPROVAL. Chapter 37. It was a few moments after the dinner hour when we returned, and as we at down at table I noted a frown on Mrs. Page's face. She always showed displeasure when either of us were late for meals. "I'm Borry we. were late,' I said, "but Helen Insisted Walter take her home and, I went along for the ride." Her face cleared Instantly and she gave me an approving glance. I had thoroughly enjoyed my ride. Walter was good-natured, full of chatter, but I knew Helen was angry. She was too soft-spoken to have it real and the glint in her eyes when she bade me goodbye held a menace. But I cared nothing for that! I had spoiled her ride alone with" Walter. And I had him to myself on the return trip. "It was only fair to take her home," Walter explained to his mother. "I had kept her an hour overtime. Posing is hard work, although most people don't think bo. Holding one position for hours; often holding a certain expression, isn't easy. And Helen is the best model I ever had." "Your picture is nearly finished, Doreen tells me," Mrs. Page replied. "Yes and I believe it will be one of my best. Connor is enthusiastic over it. I think a heap of his judgment." "Shall you rest awhile after this
one is finished? ' she asked. I felt a little thrill of delight. I was sure she
meant to disapprove if he spoke of
using Helen Ralstrom as a model for
another picture.
"No indeed! I've another picture In
my mind, an Allegorical subject. I'll give Miss Ralstrom a week's rest, then get at it." "You intend to use her?"
" es, mother. She is exactly suited to the idea I have in mind. Might
Jiave Deeu horn tor the part.' 'I don't like that girl, Walter. I don't trust her." "Nonsense!" he flushed with annoyance, and perhaps something more. "Helen's all right. Eeautirul girls are reldom liked by other women; but I thought you were too sensible, mother, to take that attitude. "And too old?'' "Yes, perhaps." I had said nothing, but now I asked: "Te!I us something of this new plc- . ture of the subject?" "It is hazy as yet. But If I cling to my idea, I shall paint Helen as a water nymph, in floating draperies, and " "That doesn't mean she won't be properly dressed in your studio, I hope," his mother interrupted. "Well, as water nymphs haven't been depicted wearing short skirt3 and sweaters, I'm afraid I shall follow the Allegory in my picture." "Why not use Doreen for the new picture? For such a subject it seems to me it would be more delicate. You could use some other face.'' Walter laughed gleefully. . Then said: "Every man to hfs trade. Mother. I'm afraid you will have to let me be the judge of my models." Nothing more was said. To Walter the suggestion had been only amusing. A day or two afterward I again Etopped in the studio. I caught Walter in the midst of repeating what his mother had said concerning using me as a model for his new picture. "Your mother doesn't like me," Helen said. "I wonder why?'' "The Master is very obstinate. She never stoops to explain and if I asked her she would probably make no reI'ly; or one that would displease you.'' "Your mother is very aristocratic rnd very intuitive." I said. "I won't lt you slander her and Helen should he very grateful to her, she was more than kind after your accident." "She got rid of me in a hurry", Hulen replied, "even if she was kind. I wonder why she was so afraid to l ave me in the house? Afraid I'd -tenl your young affections, Walter, l'il bet." She had spoken lightly, pleasantly, but she watched me through narrowed lids, a habit she had. "I rather imagine Walter's affections aren't so easily gained. His Artist imagination is easily fired; but affection is another thing,' I said, while Walter thinking we were chaffing each other only laughed. But both Helen Ralstrom and I knew that there was a deeper meaning in our words than appeared on the surface. "You're neither thin or lissom enough to pose for Walter's contemplated picture," she said, after looking at me in a way I resented. "Mrs. Pago evidently cares more for Walter's morals, than for his success as an artist." Tomorrow "Grace Harter Mystifies Helen Ralstrom."
