Chapters From a Woman's Life , By Jane Phelps
! SYNOPSIS OF PRECEDING L CHAPTERS Doreen Is the -wife of Walter Page, i artist The latter evinces much inItereet In his model, Helen Ralstrom. 'He purchases a runabout, selected by Helen, who accompanies him riding more often than does his wife. While Page's mother is paying him and Doren a visit Walter carries Miss Ralstrom into . his home at night, the
victim of a motor accident. The elder Mrs. Page sends her home in an am-'
bulance. This attitude wins Doreen over to her mother-in-law whom she, heretofore, had considered cold and proud, difficult to get along with. Grace Harter and Doreen chance on Helen and Walter dining at a Poad house together. Doreen's self-possession disturbs Miss Ralstrom's equilibrium.
FIDO.
THE SUBJECT OF MUCH DISCUSSION
Chapter 25 The absurd devotion Mrs. Page showed Fido, rather the silly fuss she made over him, disgusted me. Then the name! Whoever heard of calling a pomeranlan Fido? It was ridiculous! That little mite, not much more than a bark and a tall, given the name naturally associated with other breeds, seemed to increase my dislike for him. I did not fear him as I usually did any dog but he annoyed me, almost as much as he did Jennie. When one is not accustomed to an animal in the
house, especially in a small apartment,
nerves are rasped in spite of all desire to be sensible and kind. Mrs. Page knew I did not like Fido end resented it. When in my presence the semed to take delight in calling him pet names, kissing him, "mushing
over him" Walter called it. At times it disgusted me so that I had to leave Hie room for fear 1 should say something to offend Walter's mother; something I had determined not to do. But Jennie was hard to handle. Often she repeated her remark, made when Mrs. Page first came: ''I ain't never cooked and waited on no doe, and I ain't goin' to now!" Then for half an hour perhans I would plead with her to "be good" for my sake, telling her Mrs. Paee wouldn't he with us long, to try and be patient. I also had increased her wages on the dog's account. But I think my own dislike of the dog in the house, the knowledge that I tried to be patient, had more to do with her staying than anything I said or did.
"I guess if you can stand It I can!" she said after one of my talks to her, "but I never thought I'd come to waitin on a dog. And such a dog! ,If he was a nice big one, what was any pood if burglars come, it would be different. But that dog ain't god for nothin'. They could steal everytin in the house and he wouldn't even bark." Claire knew of Jennie's antagonism, knew of mine. She loved dogs and lanehed at us. t "Just forget 'it is In the .house," she said "Forget It!" I returned, "when it's Marling, -mother's sweet precious,' all -thp time. If people have to cuddle something, whv don't they take some rxr little motherless baby and cuddle that?" "Poor Doreen," Clair mocked. "Be f Ipd she has the doe. He keeps her h"-T often when if it weren't for him
she might make things even more disagreeable for you." That was so. Often she failed to reprove me, to show her dislike to something I said or did because she was too busy petting Fido to pay attention. I told her of Mrs. Eldridge, of her sweet patience, her delight in our visit. "She must be a very lovable character," Mrs. Page said, then surprised me as she often did by adding: "I should like to go with you if you call on her again."
' That would oe deiigntrul- I replied. "I am sure she would be flattered, and that Clair would be pleased to take you." r "Miss Gordon is a charming woman. I wish I could say as much for some of your other friends. You should be
more careful in selecting your associ
ates. A man or woman are judged by
the company they keep.
Oh, why did she always have to
spoil everything? I wondered. I had
been pleased that she wanted to see Mrs. Eldredge, that she had spoken so nicely of Claire. But she couldn't let
it go at that; she had to rap someone and take away all my good feeling. "Now that Mr. and Mrs. Harter," she went on, "they are to my mind very unsuitable companions for you, and " "You remember I told you Grace Harter was Walter's friend long before I knew him. He is very fond of her. and likes George also."- I interrupted impolitely. "I would look strange if I refused to be on good terms with my husband's friends." , "Women with sharp tongues often make trouble, she replied, sentintiously. . She never liked it when I involved Walter in anything for which she blamed me. TomorrowMrs. Page Suggests a Visit to the Studio
point of view, proper eating is a time saver. Eat simple, easily assimilated foods also plenty of green vegetables because of their vitaniinei and minerals. Drink plenty of water. Take fruits rather than thick puddings. Take exercise outdoors in the form of play or work if you can, otherwise indoors a3 gymnastic exercises. These need only occupy a few minutes daily. Take a bath each day, and ;J've the face, neck and elbows a rub with cleansing cream. Massag the scalp for a moment or two nightly. Learn how to do your nails neatly. These are only a few hints.
Mary The benefit derived from eating an ounce of raisins each day would be a small amount of iron. The sugar in them would be somewhat fattening also. L. T. W. I shall be glad to mail the formula for the henna shampoo if you send a s. a. e. repeating your request. Tillie,. W. Constant purging is irritating to the intestines and a very unhealthy method of reducing your weight. Eat less starchy food, also less meat and sugar as these are the most fattening of the foods. Sometimes just a change from white bread to that made from whole. wheat' will make a difference in one's weight when only a small amount of reducing is desired.
OIL-BURNING AUTO PASSES FIRST TEST (By Associated Press) PARIS. Dec. 18. The "semi Diesel" automobile is now an accomplished
fact. One of these oil-burning motors recently was Installed on a heavy touring car chassis weighing two and one-half tons. The car made the trip to Bordeaux and back in two days, carying five passengers, much baggage, and 60 gallons of reserve fuel. The motor is designed to burn.
"gas-oil," a heavy petroleum product
remaining after the kerosene has been extracted. It costs here 12 cents a gallon as compared with 56 cents for gasoline. The car made about 7 miles to the gallon and about 280 miles on a gallon of lubricating oil, so that the
cost of operation worked out at two
cents a mile. Experts in charge of the experiment
predict a great future for this type of
motor. The engine used was found too small for the weight it had to pull, but an average speed of 30 miles an
hour was maintained, which was regarded as creditable. The "semi-Diesel'' type of motor, its friends say, not only costs less for upkeep but is simpler and therefore cheaper to make
than the standard type. Experiments are being conducted with the idea of using this new engine on the automobile busses of Paris.
Savings Stamp Owners Mast Apply in Person While no applications for the redemption of war savings stamps for cash are being received at the postmaster's office this week, it is an
nounced that persons wishing to make such exchange of the 1918 series must do so in person. Written notices mailed to the postmaster will not serve as substitute. Heavy Christmas business at the postoffice this week makes it necessary for the owner of war savings stamps to wait until after Christmas to make application for cash exchange.

Beauty Chats By Edna Kent Forbes
LEARNING YOUR JOB At first glance you may think this has nothing to do with beauty. But it has, a lot. Being a-i beautiful as possible is a duty, a task, or if you will, a job. Every woman should learn how to run her house efficiently if she is a housekeeper, or to take swift accurate dictation if she is a stenographer. It's one of the most important duties, and it's one that she can combine with other work. It needn't take her
long performing this d,ty of keeping herself good looking it need only be studied well and done well. For instance, No one is beautiful without a good complexion. Now it takes no longer to eat proper foods than improper ones, it's all a question of knowing;
which foods are good for the system and which will clog it and impede its working and bring on pimples and blotches. Indeed, from the efficiency

Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a voune: girl in my teens. Some weeks asro I was going with a young mnn. Ft. high school, a few years my senior We got along very nicelv until one of his boy friends quit his girl, who was one of my girl friends, and then he seemed to get further away from me. A few weeks ago I was coming
down the street and he ran away. He came bark, but it made me, angry j and I wouldn't have anything to do with him. I Lately I have been receiving some i very mysterious letters and. they
sound very much like his. The letters have no signature, but I feel al- j most sure they are from him, trying; to mak up with me. , j A few days ago he came to school and spoke very nicely and went on. He always seems embarrassed when 1 am around. He used to come there nearly every week, but after we had our fuss I did not expect to see him again. When he came he just got a drink and went back. Do you think he wants to make up with me? I like the boy very much and would like to know what to do. Do you think he wrote the letters? SWEETHEART. It is impossible to say what the boy wants to do. Speak to him pleasantly when you meet and if he wants to so with you again he. will find a way. I do not believe he wrote the letters even if they do sound like him. Probably some one is trying to play a joke on you. Ignorp the letters and do not mention them to anyone.
