DUTY OF CHURCHES TO EDUCATE, SAYS
EX-EARLH AM HEAD
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Dec. 15. ""Churches must be Jarred from their state of self-complacency," Dr. Robert Xt Kelly, former president of Earlham college declared in an address today
before the Council of Church. Boards of Education and the Association of American Colleges at the annual meeting of the executive committee of the Federal Council of the Churches of
Christ in America. '"It is true that
much ha3 been accomplished in the last few years in the field of Christian
education," Dr. Kelly said. "But the
failures are tragic enough to keep us
all humble. The churches need to re-
rent for their sins of omission and
commission. '
"In the second place, the churches reed to realize their educational function. Certainly there must be no less emphasis on evangelism, but the churches must learn to speak and think the language of education. The world
needs to be saved and it also needs to
"be taucht. If this is done, it must be
done by the churches. . It 'will not be
done officially by the state.
"Churches must see their educa
tional problem steadily and see it
whole. What is required is unity of
purpose, community of feeling, the
pirit of co-operation. Must Be Responsible
"The churches must assume larger responsibilities for Christian education in the schools. This means the Sunday
schools, the private schools, the pub
lic scnools.
"The colleges must reconsecrate themselves to the task of Christian
education. The theological seminaries
must become educational institutions.
The churches must equip seminaries
so that thev may make a real con
tribution to the work of Christian edu
cation.
"The time has come for adjustment, for distribution of functions, for ap
portionment of tasks. The time has
come for active unselfish co-operation.
The friends of Christian education must get together and they must stay together, think and work and pray to-
gether. Ignorant of Advertising
Churches are wasting a lot of money
on advertising, declared Arthur E.
Hungerford of Baltimore, Md., who is in charge of the publicity work for, the
Federal Council. Not because the ad
vertising does not pay, but because it
could be made to pay more, he said.
"Because of the lack of trained men,
it is impossible for the average con
gregations to have effective advertis
ing and the cost is too great for the
average church to buy trained adver
tising advice, Mr. Hungerford con
tinued. "What the churches can not
afford singly, however, they can carry
on together. Mistakes will be made in
community church advertising, as it is
a new field, but in the end it will have tremendous Influence on the com
munity.
"Then there is the news service. The
favorite newspaper definition of news is that it ii whatever will interest the
majoritv of its readers. Now the story
of the doings of - the hurch today is
good news and the newspapers are de
sirous of printing it, but the church has
ben slow in making it available."

This Expression Induces Wrinkles
There are two ways of encouraging
old age. One is not to care about your
self, and the other is to go about looking as though the world mistreated you. If you belong to the first sort, in my opinion you don't deserve what
you won't work for lasting youth so ! you shan't get much sympathy. If you belong to the second sort well, the world mistreats so many of us that it's
almost a normal state of affairs, bo
why worry too much over it?
Real sorrow and real troubles are
aging, we can only feel badly for those who are Buffering. But even then, a certain sportsman-like attitude about it before the world, "the brace face on the breaking heart," is a good thing to cultivate. I'm not preaching, except
from the point of view of the beauty
doctor, who wants to see every woman with' her lips curled half way Into a
smile, because this lifts , droopy mus
cles and- keeps the face young and the
expression sweet. It keeps tne digesthe whole reacts upon the appearance, tion and the disposition sweet, too, and
But most trials and sorrows are
small really they are, after all and
not worth the worry and grieving they
get. Most of the people who go about with down drawn lips and morose ex
pressions are bothering themselves about trifles and wearing away their
youth and strength over nothing. A
smile of even the most forced variety
makes the face young and keeps it young to say nothing of the good
things it does to one s character! All of which doesn't mean that you should go about with a Cheshire grin on your face all the time! I only mean don't go about looking badly, looking glum for that brings on age and wrinkles.
M. P. All those short cracked hairs in the front of the head are only the
natural result of constant curling. As
long as you torture your hair into artificial waves it will go on splitting and breaking off and getting drier and drier. Don't do it Think how odd it looks anyway, with the hair of the back of the head a different Bhade, and glossy,
long and straight! Simply stop using curling irons. Use a tonic to make the hair grow faster. As It will be hard
to do up until it grows in again, use a hair net to keep it looking nice and neat.
Jennie: Witch hazel 13 a very good
astringent. This can be used after the
face has been washed and rinsed. Rub
some on the hands and rub it in, or pat it on with a bit of cotton and let it dry. It will make the skin fine grained and help overcome wrinkles. It's delightful o use and refreshing. Of
course, your stomach must be in good
order and the bowels must be acting
properly, or the skin will never be good.
Miss Q. The eyelash stain washes
off with water, so it must be used
over again If you want the lashes darker. I advised your friend to use it rather than the eyebrow pencil because she smeared her skin with the grease of the other. Must you use anything? Few lashes really need touching up. All Inquiries addressed to Miss Forbes In care of the "Beauty Chats" department will be answered In these columns In their turn. This requires considerable time, however, owing to the jrreat number recrlved. So If a personal or auicker reply Is desired, a stamped and eelf-addressed envelope must be enclosed wltb th nuastion.- The Editor.
