THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, RICHMOND, IND.,FRIDAY, DEC. 15, 1922.
FINEST SYMPHONIC CONCERT GIVEN BY . ORCHESTRA, HARPIST
The finest symphonic concert of th season was heard by those who attended the "A" orchestra program at the high schoor auditorium Thursday j evening, for which Signor Pasquale Montani, of Indianapolis, the noted - harpist, was soloist. - - . .
The harpist playe'd with the orcbes- - tra in its numbers thus affording for the first time a complete symphontc instrumentation of the organization. Most of the harp parts played with the ; " orchestra were arranged by Conductor : J. E. Maddy. The orchestra played au , J unusually difficult program which tax- ! ted skill and training and showed its ; ; remarkable- ability. Mr. Montani has the technical comI'l mand, discriminating interpretations, I and fine tone of the true virtuoso. He is a finished artist in every sense of the word. His tonal shadings were ' particularly beautiful The harp loses ':' none of the atmosphere of romance U and sentiment which has been woven 11 about it since the dawn of civilization, -.'in Mr. Montani's - playing but rather he impresses more strongly upon his U listeners the resources, charm and Zl beauty of this instrument. ; Zl Insist on Encores A testimonial to h:s art was give.: ; by the audience wh-?n it insisted on three encores after nis solo, "Air anl ;; Variations for Harp' by Parrish Alvars.- The harmonics and .running v passages which embellished the themes of the compositions he played were brilliantly executed by the musician. A lullaby, one of his own com- ? positions, was one of the loveliest bits i the harpist rendered. The harp incidentals plaed in Henry Hadley's "Angelus from Third ! Symphony" showed better than any pother orchestral number last evening the beauty of harp music with other instruments. Mr. Montani also played accompaniments for Christmas carols sung by the Girls' Glee club of Dennis school. w A powerful rendition of the overture rt"Poet and Peasant" by Suppe was giv"en by the orchestra. The string section played Tsohaikowsky's Andante ;;.C'antabile for string quartet with rare beauty. The "Apres-Midi d'un Faun" by De
bussy with all its vague mystery and
haunting impressions was creditably executed by the orchestra, the harmonics played by the harpist further enhancing the beauty of this fairy theme. ' The impassioned and alluring melodies which make Listz's. "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" were played with a feeling and interpretation which made it one of the best numbers of the evening. Give Christmas Carols. The Dennis Girls' Glee club under
the leadership of Miss Gertrude Kohl-
er. musical supervisor of the Dennis
Junior high school, sang a group of
Christmas carols, as one or tne special features of the program.' Their numbers were "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "O Come all Ye Faithful" and "Silent Night." Mr. Montani gave a demonstration of the harp following the program. He showed how the variations oltone are not made with the fingers, as commonly supposed, but by the use of seven pedals which are connected with machinery in the harp that turns small wheels which manipulate the strings so as to produce change in key. Mr. Montani besides being a player is also a teacher of harp playing.
QUICK AUTO LICENSE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE . - Additional help has been employed to try to render as good service as
possible In issuing 1923 auto license
by the local branch of the Hoosier
State Automobile association at 12
North Tenth street.
This was one of the original offices
from which plates are Issued and the
auto owners have appreciated the serv
ice to the extent that a number of other branches have been established
tins year.
The office receives no compensation for the services except the notary fee.
The city or county is not required to expend one cent for the service. It does not cost ' the taxpayers anything not even for maintaining an office or any office overhead. Nothing can be gained by waiting until it is nearly "time for the officers to "crack the whip" on delinquents.
