NEW ORLEANS ROUTE WOULD BE OPENED BY NEW WATERWAY

CHICAGO, Dec. 14. A largo section of northwestern Indiana may be opened to direct waterway connection wlt'i New Orleans and other Mississippi

waterway, work on which is to be re

sumed in the spring

The Illinois project, includes dams and locks to make 60 miles of the

Illinois and Des Plaines rivers be

tween Lockport and LaSalln navigable

It will furnish the connecting link between the Great Lakes and the

Mississippi.

The Illinois river i" formed by the

junction of the Des Plaints and Du Page with the Kankakee river. Just below their junction point, at Dresden Island, a lock with a 17 root lift, a

dam and a power house generating IS. 000 horsepower, are to be con

structed. Form Large Lake

As a result an imn-ense Jake will be

formed, backing up the Knnkakee for several miles. M. G. Barnes, stato waterways engineer, has informed Governor Len Small that cpnstructioa of two dams and small locks In the Kankakee will render that river navigable for barges to the Indiana state line, while Indiana has already completed a dredging prcject tp drain the vast Kankakee marshes, giving the river cv channel nine feet deep for 75 miles into Indiana. If the two Kankakee lodfcs are btiilt by Illinois, the barges will then be able to navigate the river to a point south of LaPorte, Ind. Gov. Small is much Interested in the Kankakee project, as his borne is ei Kankakee, on the river near the Indiana line. The Indiana reclamatlou project has developed a new farmiig district, whose crops might be (jonveyed di- - rect to New Orleans bjf water, the governor says.
